Another Iraqi Milestone

Iraqi Troops Seize Control Of Baghdad's Sadr City

Iraqis Troops Taking The Lead (AP)

This will be yet another story the MSM will most likely miss.

Again while we watch the unfolding drama on both KY and OR Democratic Primary (which is still the best Democratic Primary EVER), another font on the War on Terror was slowly being won.

I speak of course, of Iraqi Troops taking control of Sadr City.

Thousands of Iraqi troops moved unchallenged into Baghdad's Sadr City Tuesday to seize the Shiite militia stronghold, in the largest attempt yet by the government to impose control, an Iraqi military spokesman said.

The large Iraq force backed by tanks entered the sprawling district before dawn, with troops taking up positions on street corners and deploying on rooftops as Iraqi Humvees patrolled the streets, residents said.

The move is the strongest attempt yet by the government to impose control over the district, which has long been the unquestioned bastion of the Mahdi Army, the militia loyal to Muqtada al-Sadr. Iraqi and U.S. troops have in the past largely stayed on the neighborhood's edges.

And Barack wants to pull out now? I want what he is smoking*!

[Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Qassim a]l-Moussawi said three brigades with about 10,000 troops were involved in the deployment. He and the U.S. military said American troops were participating, though al-Moussawi said U.S. forces were nearby in case their support was needed.

Oh, I am sorry. When I say the MSM is ignoring this news story altogether I missed one news group. AP did write an extensive article on the subject.

While my heart jumps at the prospect that our troops can now start coming home, I am conflicted. Is Iraq really ready to stand on it's own?

General Petraeus is set to give his next congressional review coming in July. Maybe he will have the answer that we might start drawing down troops to pre-surge numbers (132,000) or, if we are so lucky, even less. I think I will let our man on the ground in Iraq to say what troops withdraw we should make and not bureaucrat in Washington DC.

*On second thought, maybe not...

Sadly... by IL-Glock21

I'm sure this story will get drowned out by the bigger info-tainment story of Obama hitting the mostly irrelevant 50% of pledged delegates "milestone."

This is a huge deal, and shocking considering the years of difficulties faced in trying to pull this off.

This deserves far more attention.

Great news. We should be by South Park Conservative

Great news. We should be celebrating! Our troops have done an amazing job at by far the toughest job for a military, counterinsurgency, over the past year and a half while we have actually had a coherent strategy.

Imagine what big news it would be if the Iraqi Army withdrew from Sadr City in defeat. But when they take control of it, you don't hear anything about it.

Such good news..... by Carol in Austin

and so little coverage. I am so encouraged by the progress in the last few months. I pray that the progress continues and the troops start coming home - and that is looking more possible everday. I dare say it will help McCain's chances this fall, if all keeps going well.

Glad you didn't stay away, BG5. I was very bummed at the prospect of you leaving.

Those Iraqi troops will now have some confidence under their belt. Nothing like success to breed success!!!!

BTW, what is that thing?

It looks exactly like one of those old Soviet "BMP" troop carriers from the 1980s. Is it?

BMP-3 vs. BMP-1 by Skanderbeg

That looks indeed like a newer model.

The one pictured earlier does indeed appear to be an old Soviet-era BMP-1:

Apparently the CFE caused a big surplus of them; the one pictured is an old East German one that ended up with the Greek army....

yep.. by Pentagon16

That is an Iraqi BMP personnel carrier.

Notice also the weaponry being held by the Iraqi Jundis: that my friend is an American M-16 Assault Rifle. We have been transitioning the IA over to American equipment and away from the AK-47 and Soviet inventory. Just another milestone..

Do a google search for BASRA Operation Lion Thunder...

compare to the American M113s???

If we could combine the accuracy and range of the M-16 with the punishablitiy of the AK-47.

Guns??? You want guns???... by From ME to you

I used to work with the 'toys' in this video! Too bad the gov't stopped funding development on the XM307/XM312 GMG/.50Cal MG! It had potential! It's surprising because SOCOM seemed to be interested in it.

I'm feeling particularly bitter and like I need to cling to something right now.

has worked great since WWII, as long as you set the headspace and timing (or you might end up with the name "pop gun," like one of our tank commanders did last year).

Have you added to the population of the McCain 2008 minicity yet today?

from this post is the award of a dozen Iraqui Flags!
