The Do-Nothing Congress

The US Congress gets nothing done, no matter who governs. Instead of introducing policy bills that would make a DIFFERENCE in our lives, the Congress introduces phony laws and resolutions. Take the the people who represent my home state, Ohio.

Elected in the tidal wave of 2006, Democrat Sherrod Brown has introduced 110 various bills. But wait! These include resolutions honoring and recognizing various people (John Glenn, Bill Willis, etc.), a resolution recognizing the importance of SOIL, and various resolutions reminding us of the plight of various peoples. And to think I almost voted for him.

And it doesn't get better with Republics. George Voinovich was elected in 1998, but look at his record. He has arranged for the employees of the Department of Homeland Security to be honored, the anniversary of the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens to be recognized, the attacks on Estonia "condemned", among others. Thirty one senators above Brown in seniority and still no useful accomplishments.

The accomplishments of my congressman were only somewhat better. Pat Tiberi (R-12th District) introduced resolutions recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty and the "life, achievements, and contributions of John Henderson McConnell". But for all this bluster, at least Tiberi got something done. He succeeded in "requir[ing] the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to ensure high-risk borrowers and borrowers who are applying for zero down-payment loans to receive housing counsel."

Maybe I'm wrong about this. Maybe my standards are too high. Or maybe Senators Brown and Voinovich are the exception to the rule. If I am, tell me.

And sadly also. It's too bad that people like Coburn and McCain in the Senate and Hunter and Boehner in the House are the exceptions, and not the rule. The country would be a better place if it was.
