Iraqi Army Defeats Al Qaeda in Mosul

From the News You Won't Read In The New York Times Department:

With the support of the American 3rd Armoured Cavalry Regiment, the Iraqi Army has defeated Al Qaeda in Iraq, driving them from their last remaining stronghold in the northern city of Mosul. The offensive known as Operation Lion’s Roar has seen the Iraqi Army kill Al Qaeda leader Abu Khalaf, while capturing over 1000 terrorist fighters. The terrorist numbers once numbered more than 12,000.

“I think we’re at the irreversible point," American commander Major-General Mark Hertling told Times of London reporter Marie Colvin.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was openly optimistic in his assessment of the situation. “They were intending to besiege Baghdad and control it,” Maliki said. “But thanks to the will of the tribes, security forces, army and all Iraqis, we defeated them.”

The situation in Mosul, the last Al Qaeda stronghold in the country, has improved to much that Colvin was allowed to stroll through the streets with an Iraqi Colonel as house to house search operations were carried out.

Last Friday I joined the 2nd Iraqi Division as it supported local police in a house-to-house search for one such bomb after intelligence pointed to a large explosion today.

Even in the district of Zanjali, previously a hotbed of the insurgency, it was possible to accompany an Iraqi colonel on foot through streets of breeze-block houses studded with bullet holes. Hundreds of houses were searched without resistance but no bomb was found, only 60kg of explosives.

Come to think of it, by jonlester

we've heard little from Mosul or Kirkuk, both of which are major oil towns. Pacifying Mosul will likely make a difference in long-term oil supply forecasts.

until after the election that is: If Obamessiah is elected, the Victory In Iraq will be reported on Jan 21, 2009 -- not a day before!

If John McCain wins in November, it will remain a non-story.

that the Iraqi's would want a different way of living....they are not the jihadi muslims they were quite secular under Saddam they are more like Turkey than Iran...and they will continue to want a different way of life.

coming out of any other source than the Times of London.

Seems the American press has a similar distinction to Obama's bus. Their underside is being pushed up toward the ceiling by all the stories they have been sitting on.

GC to need Sabbaticals. We can't win with the piss poor attitudes here.

I know it's hard to hang on to when everyone's tired and struggling more and more to get through the day lately, but we know what happens when we don't try so I just try my best.

Let's look at this as optimists. First, Obama has peaked way too early and has not built up the lead he should have by this point. Second, McCain is starting to realize his campaign, and is retooling now. And finally, Iraq.....

It is virtually all good news. The surge has worked perfectly, with the Iraqi Army stepping up big time. Al Queda is getting crushed, wherever they choose to fight. The political scene is getting better, and will likely continue to improve. And best of all...

McCain was right, from the beginning. He said the original approach wouldn't work, and he was right. He called for the surge, and was right. Obama, on the other hand, has showed consistently bad judgement on Iraq, and is looking like he may flip here as well.

Give it time, Dukakis was far ahead at this point, and got killed. Same will happen to Obama.

every silver lining has a dark cloud hanging over it!

we can find a news article informing us that by the end of this month, it is planned for our Iraq presence to be back to pre-surge levels (down from 170,000 to about 140,000). All this brought about by our amazing troops on the ground. Hooah!

So THIS is why all of the news channels have been focusing on that divorce thing with that supermodel lady that used to be hitched to Billy Joel.

I was wondering why that was newsworthy, I see this is why.

Nope. Celebrities and their love affairs are always more important than the fact that *gasp* we are actually winning the war in Iraq or anything that is ActualNews™.

When reality doesn't suit the MSM's narrative, they simply choose to ignore it, cover it up, or make it seem like it is something else. In this case, they're ignoring it and covering it up.

Some of us have been saying for a year that we were winning. Looks like the media is finally catching up.

Clearly Obama has been proven correct- the "unwinnable civil war" he railed against has come about and now there is only the option of having our Marines carted off the roof the Baghdad embassy in Blackhawk helos as Al Qaeda marches into our former HQ and COPs..
