The Unspoken Problem with the McCain Presidency
By Flagstaff Posted in Elections — Comments (42) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
It isn’t just the issues on which John McCain is off the Conservative reservation that generate angst among the other members of the tribe.
After all, he is undoubtedly better on all those issues than his opponent will be.
The Problem is that the Republican Party will certainly accept every vote for McCain as support for all those mistaken positions—illegal immigration, Guantanamo Bay internment, interrogation of prisoners, “reaching across the aisle.” And McCain himself has given no indication that he won’t come to the same conclusion.
That’s why we have such anxiety as we reluctantly acknowledge the necessity to support McCain this year. And there's no reason to believe that the anxiety will go away.
"in Congress the lesson of 06 they came away with wasn't that we abandoned key principles, it was we didn't go far enough left."
I haven't heard that explanation from anyone. I've heard the debate that it was "a 6 year itch" so it's no big deal. I've heard "it's the war" so it will end when the war ends. I've heard "a few bad apples that were corrupt" which doesn't affect the rest of us.
But I have not heard anyone saying "we need to lurch left to win."
The closest to that is saying that Rs lost the Hispanic vote big (65-35) and lost ground compared to 2004 (55-44) and that the immigration debate was probably part of the reason for that loss. But most critics there say it has to do with the rhetorical choices of the Tancredoites and the few who support forced deportation, not a reasonable compromise that involved border security and non-deportation solutions. That's not exactly "lurching left."
Personally, I still think the corruption turned off non-ideological voters. And you're right that the GOP hasn't learned the lesson on corruption and earmarking. But that's not a moderate v. conservative issue.

immigration, The loss of Latino votes was LESS as a percentage than the loss of middle class whites. Let's face it, moderate republicans, independents, and Reagan Democrats abandoned the GOP in droves.
Furthermore, all polls I have seen show a slight majority of Latino voters are against further illegal immigration.
I also did not hear much of this "harsh rhetoric" that everyone talks about coming from some of the GOP. I heard over and over again people going out of their way to say they did not dislike Hispanics, or that they were pro legal immigrant.
I did hear some pretty nasty stuff directed at the anti-illegal immigration forces though.

Whatever we may disagree about, I think we can agree that the RNC will draw the wrong conclusion from any election outcome. They will do so willfully, with full knowledge of what they are doing.
I also did not hear much of this "harsh rhetoric" that everyone talks about coming from some of the GOP.... I did hear some pretty nasty stuff directed at the anti-illegal immigration forces though.
Right. It primarily came from the left in the form of an accusation that the refusal to grant amnesty was tantamount to a call for immediate deportation, and won't that be terrible? You can bet we'll hear it again in the general election, and John McCain had better be ready for it in a plausible way.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really matter if you heard it. Tancredo got full play on Spanish language TV and in other sources targeted at Hispanics. When he says something like "Miami is a third world country" most here don't notice but it definitely hurts the R brand in the Hispanic community.
Furthermore, I didn't say that Hispanics support illegal immigration. I said that the Tancredo style rhetoric and the forced deportation advocates hurt.
Finally, if you haven't seen Tancredoism, you must be newer around here than I thought. We've had a good number of people who seem to stay up at night because they had to press 1 for English and think it's an insult to call someone "Juan McCain". Many are no longer around here. But yes, there is an unfortunate minority who are anti-Hispanic and their words get more play than they should.
We lost moderates and Hispanics more than other groups. We can argue about why, but those are the numbers.

Now when I hear him talk, the first thing I think is when is his new book coming out? Newt has become Dick Morris version2.0.
Global Warming, complete surrender on that, reign on spending, nope, slowing of pork barrel projects, full steam ahead, secure the border, not a priority, real energy independence by developing our own resources, not interested. I'm sure I could come up with a few more but our side seems pretty happy to defer to the Democrats or in some cases coauthor THEIR legislative priorities.
It just seem to me that the Republicans have completely thrown away the lessons of Reagan and become the party of Democrat-lite. I'm not the only to notice the leftward drift, if no one else can't see it I don't know what to say.

Newt is a complete and utter disappointment, and that ad with SanFranNan is stomach-turning.
Gingrich tried to explain it the other day on Hannity's radio show. His explanation sounded good until I held it up to the ad. Newt has forgotten what it's like to really be Conservative. And/Or he's become addled.

Ok...for about the 100th time here on RS, we get it, you and others don't like McCain.
But if you don't like McCain, who do you like, who will you nominate in the future that can actually garner a majority within the party, what platform will they run on, what ideologies, what principles do they espouse? Is that not the standard by which we evaluate and nominate a standard bearer, let them tell us what their ideas are and then hold an election to nominate our standard bearers?
If leadership means standing for something rather than against something, then the honest question to you is wis who do you like, who is showing leadership in the "Big Tent" of the Republican party that you like and would follow, who has a brand of leadership and an ideology that you do respect?
Is there a problem there, probably, but I hear no solutions to what you decry as a leftward creep of the values of this party, just a statement that you don't like who came out of the nomination process.

Conservatives who reach out to conservatives and not the Kennedy's and Feingold's of the world or the cap and trade tax increasers, or the dude that recommended Souter. I pray and hope that McCain doesn't pull a Gingrich by making an ad with that nasty Democrat Speaker Pelosi.
What a conundrum, we must vote for McCain and we must vote for conservatives to ensure that whoever McCain crosses the aisle to the left with doesn't get anything implemented.
So really, conservatives are starved for conservative leadership that gives us a warm and fuzzy. So far, there is no new contract with America that is making any news.
Like ElRushbo was saying about the latest GOP losses in Congress, "The Democrat are winning with conservative candidates, and the GOP is trying to lose with moderates."
So what about Mike Pence? Awfully soft spoken, but he would fit the bill for his ideology.

The idea of Mike Pence is fine, ElRushbo..not so much in my view. He's a fine entertainer, and commentator for that matter but he's not my idea of a moral leadership for many reasons.

Trice divorced with a history of prescription drug abuse qualifies in my book as someone that I'm really not going to turn to for moral leadership.
Guess I'm funny that way, having been only married once to the same woman for over 20 years, never cheating on my wife and never having problems with prescription drugs, factual statements without a lot of strum and dang by the way. If you want to take moral advice from ElRushbo, knock yourself out, it is a free country, for me not so much. I don't get Rush on any station near me anyway, and he's not my cup of tea. I probably wouldn't have liked Charles Edward Coughli back in the day ether (now that is a straw man if I ever used one).
Now you want to talk about Hugh Hewett, I really enjoy his brand of intelligent conservative commentary but alas I don't receive him or Dennis Miller ether.

I not sure I care about Rush's soccer skills, but I can get worried and read all about it if he's about to start operation goal keeper, or hand ball, or wack a mole (I made that last one up and think that's actually a game at Chuckie Cheese).
And please, enough with the dense comments, thank you very much.

SteveLA--Hmmmm.
You "get it" the same way McCain "gets it" when he wants to argue about the definition of amnesty. I don't think you get it at all. In fact, it's hard to figure that you even read the blog. Usually, I'm willing to accept the blame when my ideas aren't understood, but this time, uh-uh.
The point isn't that I don't like McCain. I do like him, at least better than I like Hillary or Obama. I said as much. The blog isn't about liking or disliking McCain. It's about the fact that some of us believe the wrong lesson will be taken from the victory when McCain wins, and serious damage will be done to the country if he doesn't.
The point was that we aren't being irrational when we express frustration at the nomination of John McCain; we have valid concerns about the future of the party and of Conservatism that are exacerbated by that nomination. And the blog was also offered as an explanation for why we haven't been placated by comments like "They'll get their g-d fence."
General Confusion seemed to "get it" on the first try in Comment #1.
As for who I'd like, I think that's all water under the bridge. Fred didn't win, Mitt didn't win, "America's Mayor" didn't win, but John McCain did, so he gets my vote and my support against the Democrats. And I also agree with Oz, that we need to donate money to the cause.
ps. I wish I had the ability to know just how many votes crossover Democrat voters contributed to McCain's early party victories.

All OK, Gamecock. Thanks for the Rec. They've been few and far between lately.
As nominally a Royals' fan, I only look at the sports page out of the corner of my eye these days. Baseball needs the equivalent of the NFL revenue sharing arrangement for the small-market teams to be competitive. Or the Royals need some competent management. I'd settle for either at this point.
Whoops. I'm jacking my own thread. Guess that's better than Rush doing a head job on all the Libs. (That was someone else's comment on a recent thread.)

but I would shoot for competent management first.
Look at what some of the other small market teams have been able to do.
[Besides, isn't there some form of revenue sharing by way of a luxury tax.]
Now also found at The Minority Report
Competent management combined with 50-50 revenue sharing is my preference. The team really hasn't been the same since it was sold to Avron Fogelman and then passed around like a piece of rancid cheese. Actually though, the departure of John Scheurholz to Atlanta is what really did us in.

Let's add on to that the hubcap thieves at the NRCC, as well (I'll make an exception for Mitch McConnell and the people in the Senate, as I think they've been doing the the best they could with what they've got).
This White House, the McCain Campaign, and the graverobbers who work for John Boehner do not understand what Fred and Martha are going through, have presided over increased spending, increased deficits, a falling dollar, rampant borrowing from banks that are partly owned by the People's Liberation Army, and have steadfastly refused to be honest with the voters about the costs of this war.
Voters aren't fooled. It's part of the reason millions of Republicans stayed home in 2006. I might add that we are hemorrhaging young voters to the D's because these voters do not believe that our party is providing relevant answers for their future.
Meanwhile, the Conservative Brain Trust insists that Western Civilization will rise or fall depending on whether or not JMC picks a Movement Conservative as a VP, and completely misses the point. People are exhausted with Republicans for several reasons, some outlined above. Attempting to play the cultural conservative card completely misses the point of this election.
Part of it's the natural pendulum of politics. Part of it, however, is a Republican leadership that is demoralized and is out of ideas. There are only so many Bobby Jindals and Charlie Crists to go around. Back when they had a chance, what passed for Leadership in DC wasn't taking Mike Pence and the Republican Study Group seriously. Now, they're paying for it.
People will not trust us with power again, and we will not deserve their trust again, until three things happen:
1. We stand forsquare for economic growth on all fronts for small businesses that create jobs, especially manufacturing jobs, for working people. LOTS of working people.
2. We convince the voters that we will be careful stewards of their money. Nobody believes McCain on the tax cuts because nobody believes that they will be around after 2010. Voters understand, intuitively, that there are too many obligations out there. We lost the Green Eyeshade crowd to the Democrats long ago. We shouldn't have. Nobody believes that we are careful stewards of the public purse now, not after only two years in exile.
3. We stand forsquare for ethical politics. As I wrote to an operative friend of mine on the West Coast, the media has two rules-one for Democrats and one for Republicans. So our candidates have to make St. Francis of Assissi look like Charles Manson. If the Democrats win, as I believe they will, the pent up demands of their interest groups mean one thing: hogs at the trough.
4. In war, Victory at all costs, victory at all hazards.-goes without saying. The contrast with the Fluffy Bunny defense that the Democrats will put up will be our ace in the hole.
"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it"-Winston Churchill

This is my same thought, based on what's happening in Congress the lesson of 06 they came away with wasn't that we abandoned key principles, it was we didn't go far enough left.
I believe McCain’s VP pick will signal how far left he intends to take the GOP.
