Americans Grow Despondent - And McCain Can't Help

Americans are sullen, gloomy, despondent, morose [pick your favorite adjective] and with very good reason. April's polls show 81% of Americans believe we are headed in the wrong direction, and they are absolutely right. And their fears and anxieties are not based on our political direction, they go much deeper then that. Overwhelmingly, people do not believe any President or other government body can help this country "turn things around", and I say it's about time that they realized that fact. America was not made a country and people to emulate, by our politicians, but rather the people and industries that make up the basis of our real power.

Faced with the rapidly rising prices and the loss of personal wealth (reported to be in the trillions of dollars), everything else that is happening to America and the rest of the world is amplified significantly. For the first time in more then 30 years, a large and significant number of Americans are faced with a diminished life style. There is no question, 10's of millions of Americans are facing a reduction in the quality of life they are accustomed to.

It is not just those facts, those personal things that are making Americans gloomy. They see a changing world in which past the accomplishments and the associated status of those accomplishments has been disrupted, and in many cases they sense America is not leading the way.

America itself is suffering a loss of status as a world leader in the eyes of many people around the world. Although this is a perception, brought on by biased reporting of a liberally slanted media, it is a reality to those that perceive it to be. Once looked upon by people from other countries as the leader of everything imaginable, they now turn to dozens of other countries as being the best, the most, the biggest, the tallest, the brightest, in almost every category. We are just not what we once were, and we will not be for some time to come.

America no longer has the world's tallest building, the largest publicly traded company, the biggest oil refineries, the largest airliner is not built here any longer. We no longer have the worlds largest casino, the biggest movie industry, the largest ferris wheel and even this long time standing American icon has been usurped, the world's largest shopping mall.

While my list is somewhat arbitrary, it reflects the shift that has taken place in the world. A relatively short time ago, 10 years or so, we would have led in all of those categories. Many would argue that these things don't really matter; or do they? I think they do. The reflect several things, the most important of which is attitude.

Now I'll move on to things that seem to matter more to some, but no more important then those previously listed. Of the 25 companies poised to to become multi-national stars, none are in the United States, and only two are from China. The countries with majority of these emerging companies are Brazil, Mexico, Taiwan and South Korea. The rest of the world is growing at an enormous rate, 124 other economies grew more then 4% for the past two years.

These facts, at first glance, appear to be the basis of our perceived power, when in fact they not. We are still the world leader in many areas, most importantly our military, but also in money markets, human rights, the list is very long. America is still looked to by the worlds leaders and emulated by most of the worlds governments. The UK, Germany, France, Eastern Europe and even India have elected leaders that are far more Americanized then their predecessors. Could this emulation be the reason they are beginning to take on more of a leadership role in the world?

A shift in power is taking place, whether we like it or not, and we will no longer be considered the overall number one power in the world. It is this loss of American dominance of the world that is troubling most Americans, perhaps they only realize it unconsciously, but that feeling is real.

Our news outlets shout it out everyday, publishing lists of the best of this or that. The one that I find most striking, personally, is that only 2 of the worlds richest individuals are Americans. While we all think it's the worlds oil barons, it is not just them.

However, it's not all doom and gloom for America. We are a land of resilient people, smart people, and hard working people. When we get fed up with our slide into oblivion, we'll pull up our socks, roll up our sleeves and get back to what it is we do best, live well and prosper.

We will soon get fed up with do nothing politicians, rising oil prices, limiting factors from extremist groups, a starving world. We will once again take control of our destinies, and instead of demanding our government do something, we Americans will do it. We will do whatever it takes to make it happen. We will regain our prominence in wealth, technology, industry and supply. This country is built on those cornerstones, they are still there and they still hold us tall. We need a new house, and we will rebuild it from the ground up, upon those very same cornerstones laid down by our founding fathers.

No matter what you think, no matter how you feel, the election in November will have little to do with our return to world power, because it will take longer then any one President's term and it will be done by everyday Americans, not a politician.

My faith in the bottom up is limited to the last of the baby boomers. There are generational studies that indicate that Gen X, Gen Y, and those that follow are less resourceful, less independent, less willing to sacrifice, and generally less in all respects regarding the stick-to-it-ness and other qualities that made this country what it is.

Those born or reaching awareness after 1980 have no perspective to understand delayed gratification.

I hope you qualify that with a present company excluded.

And have faith in my generation. It is the noisy ones that will have to step aside when the rest of us decide that we want to lead this country.

I watched Fareed Zacharias on Washington Journal, and he has written about how the rest of the world is getting involved in energy resources and monetary currency like the US used to do. The rest of the world has not sat still. They have learned from studying how the US grew, and they are copying this behavior. Meanwhile, the US is resting on their laurels. The US is not creating new sources of energy. The US is not keeping the currency of the US dollar strong in the international. Why? There isn't an answer found by blaming the rest of the world. We are inflicting the wounds on ourselves with our political correctness.

The imaginary part comes from people who have never much liked what America represents and the real part comes from the fact that in a world of billions of economically competitive people you can't always expect to be #1 in everything.

One good step that America could take would be to never allow the electrical power distribution network across a large area of this country to fall into the hands of a foreign company like National Grid, who are marching in lockstep with the Kennedy/Patrick Axis of Attrition in terms of electrical power and trying to convince people that less power at higher prices equals a better standard of living.

But somehow that deal got made, and several Northeastern states are still suffering from it. Ted Kennedy didn't want windfarms off of Hyannisport and Deval Patrick doesn't want any new power plants built in Massachusetts -- EVER. And therefore all National Grid has to do is keep distributing ever smaller amounts of power at ever-increasing prices.

This is Al Gore's legacy, and it's no surprise to know that National Grid is a British company, not an American one.

They suck in every way that it's possible to suck, and I can tell you that because I live in the state with the seventh highest electricity prices in the country, and I am utterly dependent on National Grid's wobbly network and its "I'm on the other side of the ocean, bub" manner of dealing with the Colonies while taking their money.

The architects of this deal should be in the stockade.

They don't have to take my word for it, even though until I wrote letters to both of my state representatives about how unreliable the power distribution network was nothing got done.

They don't have to believe me: they can ask the people who install electric meters for National Grid, who if conversed with will tell you precisely how badly managed their company is.

I hadn't believed that in the United States I'd have to deal with weekly and even daily power outages 50 miles from Boston until I was forced to pay for electricity to a British company that just doesn't care. But it's true: why care? They're going to make money no matter what they do! They'll never have to build a power plant, and all they'll have to do is keep the masses as supplied as the Donks in this state think they need to be, at whatever prices they dictate.

Given the option to generate a portion of their own electricity at home - at the same or lower price than the local power company - how many pissed-off home owners would jump at the chance? You only need to wait a few years to see the early returns come in...

is key in on the malaise. Explain to people that it is government getting in our way, regardless of who is in charge that is a big problem. We should take our message of reduced governance out now while people will be receptive to it.

You need to cite Fareed Zakaria in this article. Half of it is just you rewriting parts of this excerpt from his book.

I thought pilgrim had caught on earlier, but benjjneb outed me fairly quickly. You guys are good and well read indeed.

My intentions of writing this piece have drawn the exact conclusions I had hoped for. IMHO Fareed Zakaria and the rest of the liberal media that write that gibberish WANT America to fail, they WANT the world to look at us at the former "Superpower", when in fact we are still the leader of the world.

When things happen, the world still turns to us for help, as it should be.

We are still the greatest nation on earth, and I can not foresee us ever falling from that roll for a very long time.

You guys responded with exactly the attitude that makes this nation so great, and I am glad you are all part of it.

The USA is more respected in the world today than it was eight years ago. Back then we were the weak horse UBL thought he could attack with impunity. Now, Iran is surrounded, al qaeda is mostly cave bound or crammed into final stand locales in Iraq and Pakistan where they are the enemies of the locals. No nation openly harbours terrorists, much less own a terror state, except for one nation, i.e.

Iran

and it is surrounded on 3 sides and just had a desperate visit from the Iraqi govt begging them to shut down the insurgent QYDS training, lest the USA attack Iran on Iran's soil.

The USA out performed all of Europe in GDP, employment, etc in this decade by far.

China? Our growth in less than 3 years equals the whole GDP of China, which is facing an abortion induced shortage of males and young people soon.

When tsunamis hit, the world cries out USA, not China.

France, the UK, London, Germany and all of eastern europe and India have elected bush like conservatives since 2001.

The US is no 1.

We are being tested.

We will pass the test.

If life sucks here so bad, why is everyone trying to come here?
To be sure, we have our fair share of problems, but life is far from horrible.
I have much info I need to share with this community about the rickety shape of Old Europe. I just need to find the time.
I am not surprised to see the developing world giving us a run for our money in some areas. All the more reason to keep the protectionists out and use this new development to our advantage.

Nice though but by Risky

The UK has definitely not elected a "bush like conservative" or anything of the sort since 2001! We have twice elected some increasingly authoritarian social democrats, though mecrcifully they have a sound line on the GWOT.

that follow are in stark contrast to Chicken Little - I mean Illinidiva.

This right here is what we grown ups do. We take a challenge head on with the optimism that we can solve the problem.

Concerns by DonPMitchell

I don't think America is going down the tubes just yet, nor do I believe that the rest of the world is going to leave us in their dust. But two things do concern me about the long term success of America:

1. Declining interest in science and engineering.

2. Peak Oil production and the lack of a "plan B" for energy.

Indicators by JakePrime

These are not indicators of a declining US, but a successfully developing world. Thanks in no small part to US leadership and example, we see nations across the world rising out of poverty and knocking on the gates of the first world. There is simply less disparity between countries.
