Keeping Jobs in America Through Innovation

The Left is always trying to portray the Dems as the “party of science” and the GOP as a backwards, wheel-building group of troglodytes - even though there's been a big push by Dubya for improvements in science education and innovation - so, here’s something that you might find interesting that has to do with the two– Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which is going on this week in the ATL. ISEF (http://www.intelisef2008.org/) began in 1950 as a means of encouraging pre-college students to conduct scientific research, and grown in size and prestige to become the crowning achievement in U.S. high school science competitions.
The projects run the gamut, from “'Investigation of Bounce Variation Due to Pressurized Storage of Tennis Balls” to “'Engineering a Novel Gram-Negative Effective Efflux Pump Inhibitor” (no idea what that means, but sounds useful) – these kids will be leading the next generation of American innovation and high-tech scholars into the classroom, the workforce, and beyond. With the change of party dominance in Congress – and perhaps in the White House in November – it’s too early to tell if these kinds of programs will continue to be promoted and funded by the government, but ISEF is an excellent example of the innovative and potentially ground-breaking work being done by students that will remain prevalent regardless of “popular” political opinion.
I should note that this is sort of a shameless plug, since I work with this group, but the issue of keeping high-tech jobs in our country is an issue that I really feel strongly about , and I think this program is addressing that problem .If we want to keep high-tech and tech jobs in our country, forums like ISEF help to promote high-skills learning and innovation in our schools as a way to ensure that high-tech jobs in aerospace, computing, and other technology fields will 1) be occupied by skills-based American workers and 2) will discourage companies from outsourcing to countries like China and India….and who the hell wants that?

by a liberal blogger turned "mainstream" reporter named Chris Mooney who published an idiot book called "The Republican War on Science." What they fail to realize is that just because scientific fact is falsifiable and objective, that doesn't mean the IMPLICATIONS of science are objective. Those things still matter to the culture. Just because we CAN do something does not mean that we SHOULD.
Sounds like a good program though.
