Babies, Bombs, And Boston Harbor: How NOT To Support A Candidate

By haystack Posted in | | | Comments (22) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

Promoted from Diaries by Thomas, because, first, we're all about candidates who get the NRLC endorsement, and, second, it's nice to see candidates taking advantage of online fundraising opportunities that aren't just PayPal links.

For all intents and purposes, the Texas Congressman running for President has shown strong support from grassroots activists, especially in the web o'sphere. They deserve credit for their enthusiasm and creativity-and their ability to squeeze green from a black stone. There are lessons in there for those seeking new and ever-creative ways to advance a candidate...from a logistics perspective at least.

There's a big difference, however, between psyching up the minions and getting them pumped about helping a campaign versus rustling up a few Democrat talking points and insisting people MUST fork over cash: It's for the Children!!

There's the Romney supporters, leveraging Pearl Harbor imagery as the backdrop for their own fund drive in the name of his promises to support vets, and perhaps my personal favorite, Tancredo's suggestion that we need to give him money before a terrorist blows up a shopping mall...that one might be a bit over the top but what do I know?

More below the fold...

Trying to follow up on previous successes, that Texas guy's supporters are taking the Boston Tea Party approach for inspiring themselves to donate again. Sigh...so many domain names, such little time.

In contrast to these, the Thompson grassrooters are trying a new angle- giving thanks to the candidate for making a run for the White House. Now, as most know, I'm With Fred ™ and as such must say so within this piece. Having said that, I'm more likely to be drawn in to a technique such as this; saying thank you for giving it a shot has a much nicer ring to it than, say, give our guy money before a shopping mall gets blown up.

It just has a nicer ring to it, but that's just me.

[full disclosure: I am actively involved in the FredsGivingDay event, officially as a FredHead, and personally as one who prefers this approach to garnering support for a candidate.]

Fred'sGivingDay by goskyward1

Haystack,

You are so correct. The Thompson campaign is SO different in so many ways. Of course we have the difference in candidate approach to problems facing us...a direct simple answer. We have the difference of consistency...same yesterday, today and tomorrow. We have the difference of honesty...it's there. We have the Fred'sGivingDay November 21st event, which was started and is run not by the campaign but the grassroots, that in and of itself is different. A program to GIVE not TAKE...now that's refreshingly different.

We are most grateful to Fred and Jeri for undertaking this grueling task of running for Commander in Chief. As one soldier recently wrote on Vets4Fred: "I feel it is my duty as a patriotic American to see a good conservative succeed our current commander and chief...I know with Fred that we will have that man of honor to look to for direction and leadership,"

Veterans appreciate Fred taking on the task and they will donate.

Haystack,

Thank you for the back-handed compliment to Dr. NO supporters. I've been active in conservative/libertarian politics since 1988. Why is Red state afraid of letting true dissent happen on it's blog? i.e. Ron Paul.

Dear Sir: by Thomas

Thank you for your submission and request for permission to post material in favor of Ron Paul at RedState. Due to our previously announced policy of requiring commenters to comment on other topics during the first 30 days of their membership here, and your inability to refrain from mentioning Ron Paul for more than the first thirty minutes of your time here, we're forced to conclude that you are not that for which we're looking in a commenter, which is to say, literate.

We thank you for your submission, and offer your our best wishes for your time elsewhere.

Sincerely,

Thomas Crown

The policy includes comments on articles that talk about he-who-must-not-be-named? Hm, I didn't think it did. Obviously I was wrong.

... when he obviously would rather be doing just about anything else (heck, wouldn't we all?), isn't it the least y'all can do to fork-over some cash in thanks when he finally gives in?

So... you don't want to talk about Paul anymore..except when it serves the purpose to stir up your "base" to donate to another candidate cause golly gee we can't let those nutters outraise us?

Must be painful to see Ron ahead of Fred in that last Marist poll in NH. To paraphrase a movie you may recall:

"Who's Fred?"
"Fred's dead, baby, Fred's dead."

We don't want spambots to talk about RonPaul (RonPaul RonPaul). We're fine with folks who've been around long enough to establish their bona fides doing so.

One thing, though: Just because 'stack is a FredHead, don't presume anyone else is, ok?

That's a well-stated gross misrepresentation of the fumigation we were driven to perform here at RedState. Just kidding about the well-stated part.

If we wanted this place to be overrun with illiterate tree-hugging communist twits who support RuPaul only because he is against the war, we would have named it

"...Tancredo's suggestion that we need to give him money before a terrorist blows up a shopping mall..."

Tancredo's suggestion is that we need to secure our borders in order to protect our country. That's what Tancredo's whole campaign is about. He has already announced he is retiring from Congress so it is ridiculous to suggest he is doing this for money or notoriety. Tancredo is an honest man who saw a big problem ignored by the establishment and decided to do something about it. I think what he is doing is admirable.

Fighting the terrorists overseas is good and all but we should remember that national security starts at home.

Tancredo's Add by GreatDarkSpot

I have to give this guy a pass on his stupid ad for one reason. Back in 1996, the guy I liked the most (and someone I still respect quite a bit) was Richard Lugar. His run was going nowhere and he ran this dumb 'what if' ad about terrorists hiding a nuke in a US city - even with a scared kid asking mommy if they were going to be all right while cowering in her bed. Anyone else remember that one? It didn't do Lugar a bit of good, of course, and this won't do Tom any good either. I think both ads are/were retarded but since I gave Lugar a pass, I have to do the same now.
