The case against Newt Gingrich........pt 1

Ironically, on the same day that Gingrich has started to promote his latest book, Gingrich also left open the possibility that he might run for president this September. There are two ways to look at this.

1) Gingrich is just selling a book, and by "teasing" the audience, he keeps his name in the spotlight which has the effect of increasing book sales. Personally, I think this is Gingrich's real motivation.

2) Gingrich really will enter the race, but knows he can't win. So why run ? There are two speculative theories on this...One theory suggests that Gingrich doesn't want Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney to steal Gingrich's thunder. Once Thompson enters the race, Thompson will become the "conservative" face of the republican party and Gingrich will lose much of his built in conservative base of support.

The second theory which is more sinister in nature, but just as plausible, suggests that Gingrich, knowing he can't win the nomination, would then try to get his good friend Rudy Giuliani the nomination. The only way for Rudy to win would be for Newt Gingrich to split the vote with Thompson and Romney. Then if Giuliani were to win, Gingrich would be Rudy's VP, or be offered a cabinet position.

Now, before all of you who read this post think its Oliver Stone material, don't forget these guys are politicians. All kinds of backroom deals have and do happen in politics. The Gingrich campaign kicked off two weeks ago when Robert Novak( a Gingrich supporter) wrote a negative article about Fred Thompson's speech, even though those who saw the speech thought it was a good speech.

In part 2, I will discuss why a Newt Gingrich candidacy is bad for the country, and bad for the republican party.

In this post, I will raise key points which suggest the candidacy of Newt Gingrich would be harmful to the republican party and the country.

Lets start with the premise that Newt Gingrich is a partisan flame thrower with extremely high negatives. Therefore, the possibility of Gingrich getting the needed support from independents and Reagan democrats to win a general election is very remote...no matter if we Redstaters agree with his policies or not.

I would also suggest that Newt Gingrich knows he cannot win a general election. And I also believe that Gingrich knows there are other candidates, Fred Thompson in particular, who can articulate the conservative message every bit as effectively as Newt, yet without alienating independents. The question one should then ask, why is Newt Gingrich teasing conservatives when there are better options for 2008 ?

At a time when the republican party should be looking for a new face that wasn't linked to the big spending congress of years past, Newt Gingrich would be a disaster as the face of the party. Nor should we have as our leader a guy with as many "personal relationship" problems leading the party. Nor should we have someone like Gingrich who still has an ethical cloud hanging over him from his days as Speaker. Finally, in a recent book, Tom Delay suggested that while Newt Gingrich was excellent at giving speeches, he was a failure as an administrator. If someone such as Delay has no faith in Gingrich's leadership ability, why should we ?

Tom Delay by CarolinaMan

speaking of "ethical clouds", elaborated on Gingrich's failure as a leader. He said Newt loved imagining the schemes for a better gov't BUT he had no interest in actually guiding or even participating. He was already off on the next BIG IDEA.
It's called being a gadfly.

Newt is great for a thinktank like his AmericanSolutions but I think we all share Delay's opinion of him as president.
