Save Darfur!

I was in my speech class today and our assignment was to give a persuasive speech about any topic of our choosing. I didn't have anything formally prepared, but still went up with a speech about the reasons not to vote for Hilldog (Hillary Clinton for those who didn't see South Park last week).
My speech went fine and I got a few of my classmates to shake their heads at me because they knew that I was right, but the real fun came the speech right after me. "SAVE DARFUR!!" was the next topic introduced. My classmate went over some of the facts about the genocide in the Sudan and naturally my classmates let out the usual "oh my goodness that is awful what can we do!?". Once my classmate finished her speech, I quickly raised my hand and said, "Now why on earth would we want to stop genocide in the world. I mean, the United States led a mission in Iraq to defeat a genocidal maniac, and now look at what's being said about us. Why would be bother doing that again?"
Naturally, some of my liberal classmates immediately responded with, "Well we didn't go into war because of genocide, it was for WMD's that weren't there!" These comments got me wondering why do liberals care so much about Darfur when they don't care about the job that we're in the middle of in Iraq? They kept referencing "Blood Diamond" (which I just saw BTW) and they expected me to feel soooo bad because of the child soldiers etc. etc.
Believe me, I do feel bad. I feel bad when people are killed by their own governments. I feel bad when children are brainwahsed into killing other human beings. But I refuse to be lectured about what I should do about it anymore. We're in the middle of "doing something about it" in Iraq and these same people want us to get out so that there can be even more genocide in the region than there was under Saddam! Their hypocrisy is a major factor in why the United States isn't pushing for a solution in the region: our government knows that no matter what we do from now on to help others throughout the world, these same people will knock them down and knock our soldiers down until we are defeated.
I feel sick.

Many of the "Save Darfur!" crowd are the same people who want immediate withdrawal from Iraq. It seems they are pro-intervention only so long as there are no U.S. interests at stake.
A precedent embalms a principle.
