Gun Control fanatics are Stuck on Stupid

My first post on your blog. I figure, being the gun nut that I am, I might as well jump in head first.

In Oakland CA, they've discovered why there is so much gun crime:

Gun Control is too laxed

Yup, that's their theory. In order to get a very intelligent and well thought out view, Barbara Grady and Harry Harris of the Oakland Tribune found a 17 year old kid to interview about Gun Control. (After all, teens think they know it all, which is close enough for the anti-gun crowd. In fact, about half of the quotes in this artical are FROM teens.)

"Guns "... everybody here has guns," he said, motioning around.

Huh. Well, to make sure that they have a group of opinions to draw from, they decided to also talk to a much older adult:

"If I got a gun, I feel like I can't be touched, like I'm the man," said one 18-year-old who said he never shot a gun, but has held one.

Oh, well... if a 17 year old and an 18 year old say it, then who am I to disagree with gun control?

Now, on to the parts that actually scare me. One of the chief reasons to own a firearm such as a handgun is for defense from thugs who want to steal your money or life. Surely, in a state with high gun control laws, there must not be much in the way of gun crime. . .That's the theory behind gun control, isn't it? Reduce the guns and the criminals won't have any. Well, let's see:

According to Oakland Police Department statistics, about 90 percent of last year's 127 homicides were caused by gunfire. The department confiscated 1,241 guns connected to crimes last year, but the number confiscated "is a small fraction" of the number of guns out there, said Sgt. Kevin Kaney of the department's weapons unit. He would not provide an estimate of the total number of guns in Oakland, but said there are "tens of thousands."

Tens of thousands of guns in the hands of criminals.... in a state with high gun control laws and the government wants YOU, the law abiding citizen, to be disarmed?

Homicide is the leading cause of death for youths ages 15 to 24 in Alameda County, according to a 2006 report from the Alameda County Health Department. More than 80 percent of homicides are from gun violence, the report said. Moreover, availability of firearms is the fourth most significant "risk factor" that causes violence in a community, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Department's "Blueprint for Violence Prevention."

Yup, I wholly believe that. This is what happens when you ensure that the law abiding citizen, due to gun control laws, are disarmed. The criminals have free reign to do whatever they wish. Add to that the constant lawsuits every time a cop does his job and.... boom.... the criminal is given more rights than the victims.

Of course, no anti-gun article would be complete without lies about firearms, so here is the moneyquote:

It used to be illegal for civilians to purchase or own assault weapons. That was before the nation's main assault gun control legislation lapsed in 2004 — and was not renewed.

The Clintons, who devised this horridly intrusive 'assault weapon ban' (More or less defining 'assault weapon' as any black rifle that makes a loud bang), said that the ban didn't work to curb gun violence. That, of course, is because your average thug can't hide a rifle in his pants, but he can hide a handgun in his pants. The assault weapon ban only made things harder for law abiding citizens to have access to a wide variety of hunting rifles.

While California enacted its own handgun prohibitions, which continue to be in effect today, the number of guns brought into California from bordering states overwhelm the state's efforts to restrict them, experts say.

If only would have some sort of... you know... federal ban on firearms. Then we'd all be in peace. . . We'd all be victims, but at least we wouldn't be armed to where we might accidently defend ourselves.

One thing to note in this article... While they quote MANY anti-gun groups, there is not one bit of the article that shows discussions with, or quotes by, any pro-gun groups. Nothing in there even attempted to get the point of view of those who do not believe that gun control is the answer.

If guns equal violent crime, why do gun shows, gun shops, NRA rallies and pro-gun cities like Kennesaw, Georgia, not see rampant and regular shootings?

Great first post - R by ekevlar11

I especially like the 17 and 18 year old quotes. Hmm, fair and balanced media in Oakland. Right.

I don't understand how they think they are fooling us.

If they wanted to do a story about how the lack of gun control leads to gun crime, why would they pick California? (A state with RAMPANT gun control laws) . . .

If it was about rampant gun ownership causing violent crime, they'd have gone to Oklahoma or Georgia, etc.

But, we have lower crime than they have in Oakland, so that would defeat their hopes of imposing greater gun control.

I do like how they blame their crime on Texas, Florida and other pro-gun states.

Blame everyone but themselves.... that's the liberal way.

New York and Bloomberg by ekevlar11

Blame the surrounding states for their gun control issues. And actually go after the gun dealers in those states to get them to stop selling weapons.

And it's easy to fool many...will most people pay attention to who the subject matter experts are (17 and 18 YO) or simply pay attention to the quotes. Would they put two and two together and see that this is such a lopsided article? I doubt it, as the media continues to run with these biased stories and never get truly called on them.

Erik

Yeah, NY has a history of being anti-gun.

Even Rudy, former mayor of NYC and former Republican hopeful for President, launched a lawsuit against gun manufacturers for their guns being used in crimes.

NYC has radically strict gun control laws.

There is always one constant:

Those who would take away your guns are protected by armed guards.

They know that guns save lives. . . It makes one wonder why they REALLY want to get rid of guns.

Disclaimer: I am no fan of CA or the screwy legal positions the state takes concerning certain aspects of society. I will never live there, but I do have a soft sport for Disney and Sea World.

This is nothing new from a community that downplays personal responsibility, self-reliance and promotes government care. Couple that with the huge legal hurdles placed on gun ownership in CA and the potential for the State to side with criminals creates some real problems if one is indeed faced with a life and death situation.

Tribune would take on this subject!! Their radical left agenda has been growing beyond what it was when I was in California 15 yrs ago!

Trying to convince them that legal ownership of guns does not contribute to overall crime statistics but actually helps lower the incidence of crime falls on deaf ears.

Rule #1 when talking with liberals: Don't confuse them with facts, they can barely think as it is!!!

We need another Charlton Heston to be a vocal leader of gun ownership rights!

Gun control is being able to hit your target consistently

I'm an NRA member and I get the American Rifleman Magazine. They had a nice writeup about Heston. You're right, we need a strong replacement. Unfortunately, with far too many exceptions, we can't turn to Hollywood.

There is never a shortage of people willing to trade away freedom without thinking of what happens when they do. I've always been amazed, however, that the same people that rail against a 'police state' and who want to see cops sued for using a taser want to create an environment in which the cops are the only legally armed people.

I've yet to EVER find a reasonable argument for the following question:

"If criminals break the laws that currently exist regarding the possession and use of firearms, why is it that you think more laws regarding the possession and use of firearms will be successful?"

Nice first post. I think that you're gonna like it here.

"Even if you think our presidential choices this election year are between disgust and disaster, anyone who has ever been through a real disaster can tell you that this difference is not small. It is big enough to go vote on election day." - Thomas Sowell

Thank you! by LanceKates

That is my hope.

Over the last year or so I've been increasingly disheartened by others whom I'd always taken as being on the conservative side.

I can already tell from the short time here that this place is what I hoped that place would have been.
