Chris Matthews says Hillary is dumber than Bush

As an aside, and quite by mistake this afternoon, I found myself watching on of the most pointless exercises in the history of Presidential politics: Chris Matthews interviewing Chris Dodd on Hardball. I neither know nor care how he stands all the time, but during this interview, at least, Matthews seemed the friendly Dodd supporter.

As they were nearing the end of their little talk, Matthews designated two columns of candidates based on their repeated Iraq "strategy." Most of the Democrats are Column A, he said, which means they talk about getting out of Iraq but they want to basically continue what President Bush is doing. Column B, people like Dodd, want to get out now.

Matthews said:

But Hillary is Column A, a smarter Bush. [pause while he considered what he had just said] Maybe smarter.

To a lefty, dumber than Bush is one of the more forceful insults.

He told Dodd that he was looking good.

I like the haircut, too. It wasn't $200.

A swipe at John Edwards, as well, for a man (Dodd) who's currently polling worse than funnier-than-Franken Stephen Colbert.

To paraphrase some fun stuff:

I find Matthews's analysis and conclusions tired, unoriginal, and humorless (despite his futile effort to adopt a cheeky 'tude).

For going where angels fear to tread.

I am worried that when you give up this gig you could suffer from PTSSD (Post Talk Show Stress Disorder), though.

....to panic about the prospect of a Hillary Clinton nomination. I believe that they desperately want a Democrat in the White House in 2008, and they are starting to believe that Hillary may be unelectable. Hell, Matthews devoted the first segment of his show devoted to "what Obama needs to say to beat Hillary".

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

... on the scale of Chris Matthew's audience market niche. You'd probably count more Code Pinkers and 9/11 troothers than than moderate Democrats among his viewers. Those are the kooks that Matthews has to suck up to, trying to hold his pitiful audience share, and just bashing Bush isn't sufficient for proving your progressive bona fides to them.

Matthews was actually a by South Park Conservative

Matthews was actually a fairly moderate Democrat when he was first on TV. But he has become completely obsessed with the war and ending it. He reminds me a little of John Stewart. He always had a slant, but he wasn't as in-your-face about it for the first couple years. Once he got popular he became a raving lefty who cares more about making political points than jokes. Although Stewart is a lot more of a dick than Matthews.

has Matthews ever become popular? Maybe he thinks he is because his show is not quite as lowly rated as Tucker Carlsons.

It seemed there was a time he would tend to ask hard questions of everyone. Now it's mostly softballs for any lefty, but if he interviews a conservative you can literally see the foam/spit flying out of his mouth as he screams an endless round of DNC talking points while never letting his target finish a sentence.

I think Russert is similar. He used to be reasonably fair, at least when the MSM in general is your measuring stick, but now any interview of a conservative seems to be more an internal contest over whether to express more condescention or more faux exasperation.

I watch the show because it comes on while I'm cooking dinner. Every night it is a "bash Hillary" fest. His politics are weird. He is anti-war, but also vehemently anti-Clinton.
