Washington Post: Indiana and Pennsylvania Full of Racists

Promoted to the front by Erick.
The Washington Post today has really outdone itself. Did you know that Indianans and Pennsylvanians are racists? And if you live in Munice or Kokomo, Indiana or Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, you are a particularly vile strain.
Listen to the broad brush the Post uses to slander people. Note the neat trick in a lot of these examples: Use a term describing several or many people, then cite an example of one person uttering a racial slur. All emphasis mine.
First it is Indiana's turn. . . .
In Muncie, a factory town in the east-central part of Indiana, Ross and her cohorts were soliciting support for Obama at malls, on street corners and in a Wal-Mart parking lot, and they ran into "a horrible response," as Ross put it, a level of anti-black sentiment that none of them had anticipated.
"The first person I encountered was like, 'I'll never vote for a black person,' " recalled Ross, who is white and just turned 20. "People just weren't receptive." [snip]
Then Pennsylvania.
Victoria Switzer, a retired social studies teacher, was on phone-bank duty one night during the Pennsylvania primary campaign. One night was all she could take: "It wasn't pretty." She made 60 calls to prospective voters in Susquehanna County, her home county, which is 98 percent white. The responses were dispiriting. One caller, Switzer remembers, said he couldn't possibly vote for Obama and concluded: "Hang that darky from a tree!"
Documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy, the daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, said she, too, came across "a lot of racism" when campaigning for Obama in Pennsylvania. One Pittsburgh union organizer told her he would not vote for Obama because he is black, and a white voter, she said, offered this frank reason for not backing Obama: "White people look out for white people, and black people look out for black people."
Sometimes the Post just cites unsubstantiated incidents of widespread racism.
As drivers cruised by, a number of them rolled down their windows and yelled out a common racial slur for African Americans, according to Obama campaign staffers.[snip]
During his own canvassing for Obama, Murrell said, he had "a lot of doors slammed" in his face. But taunting teenagers on a busy commercial strip in broad daylight? "I was very shocked at first," Murrell said. "Then again, I wasn't, because we have a lot of racism here."
And it is not just the evil Republicans who are racist, it's all white people, including Hillary Clinton supporters.
Tunkhannock Borough Mayor Norm Ball explained his support of Hillary Clinton this way:
"Barack Hussein Obama and all of his talk will do nothing for our country. There is so much that people don't know about his upbringing in the Muslim world. His stepfather was a radical Muslim and the ranting of his minister against the white America, you can't convince me that some of that didn't rub off on him.
"No, I want a president that will salute our flag, and put their hand on the Bible when they take the oath of office."
Obama's campaign workers have grown wearily accustomed to the lies about the candidate's supposed radical Muslim ties and lack of patriotism. But they are sometimes astonished when public officials such as Ball or others representing the campaign of their opponent traffic in these falsehoods.
Note that the Post completely dismisses as lies and falsehoods the legitimate concerns about Obama's advisors holding meetings with Hamas and the fact that Hamas has expressed its hope that Obama will win. There are also legitimate concerns, see here and here, that he is not patriotic.
But, you see, if you criticize Obama, you are a racist. There is no objective, legitimate reason not to vote for him, you are simply "trafficking in falsehoods."
The Post then gives us the dirty little secret about why Kokomo has a problem with Obama.
Kokomo, which was once a Ku Klux Klan stronghold. On July 4, 1923, Kokomo hosted the largest Klan gathering in history -- an estimated 200,000 followers flocked to a local park.
Get that, 85 years ago, the Klan had a meeting in town. And so, therefore, their descendants currently living in Kokomo are also racists, because we all know racism is hereditary.
And of course, the citizens of Kokomo, Home of The KKK, must be that way because they are bitter, bitter, about hard economic times, and that makes them cling to their bigoted ways.
Kokomo, population 46,000, is another hard-hit Midwestern industrial town stung by layoffs. Longtimers wistfully remember the glory years of Continental Steel and speak mournfully about the jobs shipped overseas. Kokomo Sanitary Pottery, which made bathroom sinks and toilets, shut down a couple of months ago and took with it 150 jobs.
The press can write stories about racists if they want. But to slander entire American cities and states is reckless, journalistic malpractice.

about the backlash it is likely to generate. They thought that election a couple years back was the year of the angry white male? They keep this up and they're going to see what the real year of the angry white male looks like. Only thing scarier will be the angry white women joining them on the march.
"Get that, 85 years ago, the Klan had a meeting in town."
which IS racism against white people, they essentially drag race to the forefront and make folks defend themselves against the unfounded scurrilous charge. It takes the focus of the election off Obama's policies and places it on the voters who want to vote against him. It is not about the voters. It is about the candidates.
The MSM need to be called out as racists, and let their reporters (in this case, Kevin Merida) and correspondents defend themselves. Make them the issue.

ITS NOT ABOUT THE VOTERS - IT'S ABOUT THE CANDIDATES
One of the best encapsulation of what campaigns should be all about that I've seen.
One that Obama's campaign and media acolytes and trying to shift the other way.
...and that is to paint all white voters who oppose Obama (for whatever reason) as being "racists". All criticism of Obama (even if it is on policy matters) is also racist.
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
I've lived in the Wyoming Valley in PA for thirty of my thirty two years and, trust me on this one, broad swaths of the Keystone State are peopled with Archie Bunker's decendants. A lot of folks I talk to who support Obama say they'd vote from Clinton if she wins the nomination, but the flipside is the inverse. 90% of Clinton supports I talk to say they'll sit on their hands if Obama wins but can never give me a solid reason why. Quite a few have said he's "cocky," which is a hill billy's heartbeat away from "uppity."
...I have lived in Durham, NC for the past ten years, and there are broad swaths of the city in which I cannot walk down the sidewalk without being killed because I am white. The same goes for nearly every medium to large city in America. An "Obama For President" button won't really help, either. Of course, if that should happen it would just be murder, not racism, which is far worse.
I guess I am not too worried about a white guy who says Obama is "cocky".
I just find it funny as hell that an area that is overwhelmingly white, NEPA and the middle swath, won't vote for a black guy even though they have had no real contact with black people. My highschool graduating class was around 180 with one black kid and that was considred diverse.
On a side note since you're in the Raleigh area. Don't end the night drinking at Mitch's on Hillsboro Street. Those steps are waaay too steep on the way down after a few too many.
On a related note, I also find it funny that a doctor from Vermont, who has also had no real contact with black people, proposes that he has the solution to our racial problems.
Steps. Mitch's. Got it, and thanks.
could replace the word "white" with "black"? Let's face it, there is still plenty of racism and racists in this country. The good news is that most Americans are now repulsed by it. We've come a long way but still have a ways to go.
can try to convince yourself otherwise, of course.

Just a typical, small town, white girl...
Let's put it this way - when is the last time you heard of a black person being killed by whites simply because he was in the wrong area of town?
And if you are looking for the opposite situation, one that comes immediately to mind is the student body president of UNC - Chapel Hill, whose killer lived down the road from me, and burglarized a house across the street from me.
Try again.
comes to mind. Here are the FBI stats from 2006
http://www.fbi.gov/page2/nov07/hatecrime111907.html
Can't we agree that there are still too many racists in this country (one is too many) and that there are still folks who suffer because of this?
...the number of hate-related murders in 2006, by your own source - anyway, I suspect that getting below that is pretty much an impossibility.
Frankly, I hadn't realized that we were doing so well.
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!
However, I don't think we can or should stop trying. Things are certainly much better than they used to be. That is certain.
A rough look at your source states that in 2006 a whopping .003% of the population of the USA perpetrated a hate crime. Even assuming that none of those cases were actually BS, I think that we have other problems that might be a little more in need of immediate attention, even if Democrats like to talk about this one over and over and over again.
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!
Anyway, the Ron Paul army has a lock on all the mind control chips, so we are out of luck.
I grew up in a part of the South where racism was taken for granted. I have three daughters. If they say anything when I am dead and gone, it will be that they never heard or saw one thing that was racist from their Dad. So - gone in one generation, at least in my family. THAT's how you handle it, and that's how progress is made. How long does black America need? 100 more years? 200? 500? Armageddon? When will progress be such that I can walk anywhere I wish?
Most of the people who cry "RACISM!" in this country would not know it if it bit them on the nose, which is my point. We are in agreement, I believe, but I am sick of the definition of racism being dumbed down to what Obama's campaign will try to do in November. If he loses, it will not be because he is a neo-Marxist lightweight, it will be because - headline alert -"America Has A Long Way To Go."
Would you like to hear the list, unfair all, of how I suffered throughout my life? No? You mean you don't care? Of COURSE you don't. Of COURSE I don't want you to. Life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness. Adapt and overcome.
People will dislike each other for no good reason. All governmental, business, educational and polite society encouragement of such racist activity is gone - over and done -to say the very least. The current generation studies true racism as history, thankfully.
I just hate to see words lose meaning.
I presume you are referring to Mathew Sheppard. While it is tragic that he was killed, he had prior interaction with his assailants. The example provided specifically said all you are doing is walking down the street and you get killed because of your skin color.
Also, I will note that in your own link, the first case sited is for persecution of Jews, not blacks. No citations for murders. If they would have had one, I would think they would have led with it, since that would be the strongest argument in favor of their continued RICCO like powers.
He was picked up by three white men and they killed him in a most horrific way because he was black. It happens. Fortunately for us, it happens very infrequently and when it does, the perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I do not know of any areas where a black walking in a white area would be in danger. I am not saying that they would not be afraid. But I do not believe anything would happen. There are many blacks who are afraid of Muncie and Greenwood and Martinsville because of their historical link to the KKK. That is unfortunate, but nothing would happen there. On the other hand, whites in general and white females in particular would be insane to walk across 38th Street in Indianapolis at night. Just a bad idea. Of course, most blacks that I know do not exactly want to spend time in that area of the city, either.
and let me tell you we are no more and probably less racist then most other states. I live in the heartland in the KKK home town for almost 100 years and the stinch of that fact is fading because those people and their ideas are gone. I da no bout you but wez not votin fo Obama cuz hes a socialist LIBERAL.
It is going to be along six months.
What you want to bet that half of it isn't even true? Just made up by these Obama worshippers as an excuse to reconcile why some might not be so taken in with their favorite Marxist.
I've said it many times. Barack Obama and his presidential run could well set our civil rights accomplishments back 20+ years. For the sake of our country, I hope I am wrong.

Especially when I see one of the Kennedy brats spewing their lies. Some of these "anecdotes" are untraceable and unprovable and you have to trust the "journalistic integrity" of the publication. The Washington Post, that is.
LMAOROTFL!!
Thought that'd tickle your ribs!
Only the rich elites who were going to vote for Obama anyway will feel white guilt.
The more that middle-class whites are told "Unless you vote for Obama you're a racist" the better as far as I'm concerned. That will get lots of votes for McCain I'd think.
Even though I dislike the term, especially since it's all too closely associated with Indiana University, the proper term for residents of the state of Indiana is: Hoosiers.
You know, like the movie.

calling one a "hoosier" is akin to calling them "low life" or "trailer trash" or something like that. I've run into a number of Indiana transplants who can't understand why "hoosier" is a bad word around here.
But then again, maybe "Missourian" is used in a similar way in Indiana... :-)

Apparently St. Louis is the only area in which it's used that way.
Of course, in West Lafayette, it's also used in a derogatory way in reference specifically to Indiana University.

Basketball season and the Indy 500 are known throughout the world, wear the title with pride and take a good look at all the Hoosiers in history, past and present!
I am an adopted Hoosier, and darn proud of it. (If you must know, I was born in the People's Republic of California, but when I turned 40, I escaped.)
And as for being racist, somebody has some explaining to do regarding my two adopted children who have God-given, built-in suntans.
There are bad apples in every bunch, even (gasp!) in non-flyover areas, but I reject the broad strokes of uniform stereotype.
Has the Obama over-performed or under-performed on election day compared to the polls prior? You'd think if there was a way to document the racism, that'd do it.
Oh, wait. The conclusion came first, not the facts or evidence.
of how McCain is fighting a losing battle by trying to run a highbrow campaign. This is going to be the dirtiest campaign on record, and the Democrats will stop at nothing, NOTHING to win. Their co-conspirators, the mainstream media, will do their dirty work for them in many cases, such as this one. The 527s will follow suit. McCain is dreaming if he thinks things are going to be daisies and perfume. The feces will be flying fast and furious until November.

“You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say. ” - Martin Luther
What McCain said, was that he wanted to avoid personal slurs and character assassination against Obama (and Obama said he wanted to do the same thing).
This WaPo article was not a personal slur against McCain (and should not be responded to as such). It was an attack on ordinary folks for being too ignorant to vote for Obama (and who presumably vote for McCain or Hillary).
I guess the equivalent from McCain's side would be a photo report by ZombieTime ridiculing lefties in San Francisco or Berkeley or Vermont.
I hope that McCain is only doing the old Adam West as Bruce Wayne imitation of a hopelessly naive peaceable man.
If he isn't, he will wake up following the election wondering where the truck that hit him came from. If Obama is allowed to appear in scripted opportunities only, he will be very persuasive, as in "selling ice cubes to Eskimos."
He's already trying to characterize McCain as running for a third term for George Bush. McCain needs to remind folks that Obama will bring a "second term for Jimmy Carter." If he can't bring himself (or his surrogates) to say that, he may as well quit now.
"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.“--Jeff Cooper. From Bill Coffey's collection of military quotations
and this was before this most recent article. I believe that the MSM will try and advance a narrative that Obama will have trouble winning because whites are racist. They will attempt to guilt whites into voting for him. I found three other articles that did the same thing including the Abramovitz piece that was highlighted here. We all know that the MSM is in the tank for Obama and this is their new strategy. Paint a picture of racist America in hopes of guilting whites into voting for Obama. Here is my piece.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor
Even the Obama campaign denies that these anecdotes are representative of the response they have gotten. After all, Obama wouldn't be the nominee if millions of white folks hadn't voted for him. And the polls show that, if anything, Obama is slightly ahead of McCain right now, suggesting significant white support for him.
The exit polls taken in states like Pennsylvania showed that some 18% of the respondents said that the candidate's race was important to them in deciding whom to vote for. But that included blacks as well as whites.
18% is a small minority of white folks--only 1 out of 6. But in a close election, it's more than enough to make the difference between victory and defeat.
there could be at least, and probably ONLY, ONE good result of his election, i.e. that it would end the race hustlers, but Dave said no.
Dave was right by saying that any and all criticism will be harder than against white leftists since the msm will cry racism every time.

Let's consider:
"Get that, 85 years ago, the Klan had a meeting in town. And so, therefore, their descendants currently living in Kokomo are also racists, because we all know racism is hereditary."
Seems to me that 95% of those Klan members were probably Democrats and/or Communists. And of their descendants who are still in Kokomo, 95% of them are probably Democrats as well. That's hereditary too, you know. Half of them may be named "Byrd."

KKK members are every vile thing except communists. But, I agree that the guilt by association thing is lame and especially so when the association is 85 years old.

By today's standards, I understand why you say "KKK members are every vile thing except communists." But at the time, Communism was drawing it members from the same pool as was the Klan and the Democrats, too.
But I could have overstated. I wasn't there, myself.

This will be the strategy of the MSM in order to get Obama elected. Bombard people with stories like these in order to create the necessary racial guilt that would drive someone to vote for this joker. They want people to think that the reservations that they might have regarding Obama's liberalism or inexperience are simply the result of latent racism and that the only way to combat it is to vote for the guy.
