Of oil, taxes and elections.

I havent seen the exact numbers or very many details, but I did hear on the radio an idea I liked - a gasoline tax holiday paid for via money set aside for earmarks.

I like the idea. At least then that particular money is returned to all of America and not one particular slice or the other depending upon how influential said member is in Washington.

While I am discussing the idea let me note that Obama's position against the gas tax holiday, and that of Democrats in Congress who have failed to lift a finger regarding the price of gas point to something the media refuses to print. They (Democrats) are for higher gas prices.

Remember, these are the folk who thought prices arent high enough and are still (to my knowledge) contemplating adding a fifty cent tax onto already outrageous prices.

Why?

Because before all else, many of these individual within the leadership believe in gutting the economic engine of America in leu of a more "green" society.

And no, I am not against doing things to help improve the environment around us and reduce pollution.

We should not, however, be unilaterally disarming our greatest strength in international competitiveness and submit our selves to the interest of other nations.

Republicans would do well to start talking about an actual plan which would drive down costs. To do so, might be a saving grace.

They can take the opportunity by starting to crow how Democrats refused to open up ANWR by fillibustering such a proposal today.

At least for the downticket Candidates.

Unless of course you actually earmarked the money in a bill, but then that would mean that Senator McCain would have to support an earmark.

That's irony right there.

BTW, regarding "Obama's position against the gas tax holiday," he may have used the argument that "it really wouldn't make that much difference," and tried to back it up by citing average gas use, average driving, etc. (Even by mis-stating numbers.)

What is unsaid is that it would really help independent truckers. They use far more than average, and they are driving on behalf of all of us. It's a gimmick, sure, but it isn't as silly as it might appear at first. For once, McCain might be ahead of the curve.

Somebody needs to tell him why.

it would allow them to say that they "did something". At least this something would be far more acceptable than some of the terrible ideas out there: windfall profits taxes, etc.
