Michigan only gets 50% of a vote but we may still get 100% of the shaft!

Big weekend in Michigan Presidential politics followed by a big week in Michigan politics period. Of course the story on everyone's mind Saturday and Sunday was the DNC's decision to seat Michigan's convention delegates after stripping them of half their voting power. It was a move that had Obama's folks pleased as punch and Hillary Clinton's supporters seeing red. Seriously. Talk about being treated like second class citizens.
Although hey, on the bright side, at least there's only one of us named Kwame Kilpatrick because the motor city's mayor, a super delegate and Barack supporter is still being completely ignored by the Obama camp, a decision becoming more and more obvious with every visit the candidate makes to Michigan. Which is two, by the way. Two visits in the last year if you count the Oakland County stop he's got planned this week. Two. But I digress. The Lansing State Journal reports:
Kilpatrick's get-out-the-vote operation in Detroit could be key in a hotly competitive state that doesn't know Obama that well, thanks to an agreement by the Democratic candidates not to campaign for the primary.
Obama could use the mayor's enthusiastic support in Detroit, a city of 900,000 where blacks make up more than 80 percent of the city's residents and nearly always vote Democratic.
Read on . . .
Speaking of digression... "nearly always?" Really? C'mon now.
Detroiters aren't just going to wake up on election day and decide to vote McCain, as nice as that'd be. The question is will they show up to vote for the Barackstar. Kwame Kilpatrick runs an unquestionably thorough get-out-the-vote effort. But between his legal problems, repeated attempts to remove him from office, a long-standing feud with the state's Democratic governor and Obama's refusal to be seen with him, how effective an effort can Detroit area Democrats put together in what is suddenly, by all indications, a very purprle state? A question that becomes that much more important if Detroiters become as disenfranchised with the current political process as they were by the Democrats in Washington DC this weekend.
And here I thought we'd left the 3/5ths compromise in the ash heap of history. Call this one the ½ compromise, I guess.
We should probably question more than just the motivation of Detroiters to get out and vote these days too. That 900,000 number isn't exactly getting any bigger. Folks continue to head for the city boundaries and that migration probably won't be slowed any by the news that Lansing is facing another massive budget deficit. On top of $60+ million in red ink for the current fiscal year the latest numbers out of the Capitol indicate we're looking at a $472+ million deficit for FY2009. That's the budget that needs to be completed THIS YEAR.
Toss in the fact that the governor's budget called for hundreds of millions in new spending and the legislature is left to figure out a way to trim over a billion dollars from her initial request. At least according to The Cush. The Detroit News reports:
"We won't be able to do the $600 million increase in spending the governor has proposed, but I want to see some modest increase, especially in higher education and community colleges and programs to help the less fortunate," Cushingberry said.
House Appropriations Chairman George Cushingberry Jr., D-Detroit, said the state can't afford the budget proposed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm in February.
Funny that last year's multi-billion dollar tax increase didn't solve the problem. Hmmm. Who was saying that time and time again throughout that budget battle?
Don't worry, though. It's an election year and the Democrats swear they're not coming after our wallets again. They'll just cut revenue sharing. Except they say they won't cut revenue sharing. So maybe they'll cut school funding. Except they promise they won't cut that either. So they'll scrap the Governor's idea to deposit one-hundred million in the rainy day fund. That everyone can agree on. Which brings the magic number to, oh, nine-hundred million!
There's always corrections. The Granholm / Cherry / Schauer / Dillon team seem awfully interested in releasing thousands of dangerous convicted felons onto the streets but that's not a particularly bright idea either, what with them being CONVICTED FELONS and all.
Interesting, isn't it, that the Democrats fight tooth and nail to expand the rights of the bad guys literally at the expense of the law-abiding taxpayer? And we haven't even talked about Nathaniel Abraham. Although in fairness, he's a special case. He didn't just kill someone and get released a few years later, he actually got thousands of dollars in bonuses from the State when the prison doors flew open. Housing expenses. Education. The whole deal.
What does a Michigander have to do to get a little love from the Governor these days, kill someone? Meanwhile, we're wasting cash prosecuting folks like... well... Alycia Martin. She's the woman, you may recall, who was arrested for... spending some special alone time with Debbie Stabenow's husband, liberal radio celebrity Tom Athans. Oh, and he paid her for her time. Allegedly.
Troy's 52-4 District Judge William Bolle will consider the motions (tomorrow).
Todd Flood, attorney for Tom Athans, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow's husband since 2003, said he didn't think his client would be in the courtroom.
Alycia Martin, through her attorney Frank Cusumano Jr., has filed several motions in the case, including one to get it dismissed and one contending the search of the hotel room used by Martin was illegal, court officials said.
Athans isn't going to trial. Only Martin. Prosecutorial dollars veeeeeery well spent. It's a wonder we're in a worsening financial mess. Not that there's no hope. They'll balance the books. They have to. It's the law. Which still matters, technically.
So where's the cash going to come from?
Keep your eyes peeled, boys and girls, for talk of "loophole closings" and "tax decouplings." These are buzzwords that translate directly into TAX HIKE! And unless the Governor and her lefty pals suddenly develop a fiscal conscience they're looming over the horizon. To the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.

the dems have had a long time to study the Michigan model. A recession? Blame it on the previous administration. Budget shortfalls? Blame it on, well I repeat myself. And the media, for the most part, goes along with whatever comes out of the mouths of dems. It's not their fault, it's just the way they are.
Even before the primary began Barack was portrayed as the rising star of the Democratic party, and his race was a large part of his appeal. In today's America the majority of people want to see minorities do well and succeed, and I believe this was the driving factor behind the mainstream media's love affair with Obama. It also made it very difficult for Hillary to attack Obama, because this put her on the side opposed to the MSM and their darling.
Now time has passed and Barack is not protected by the media as strongly as he was at one time. Enough journalist have remember that they are supposed to report the news and not just join the campaign of their favorite candidate. Now Barack can be attacked without the attacker being portrayed as Snidely Whiplash, and what has emmerged?
Barack doesn't have a clue how to fight.
Harold Ickes is out making the case for Hillary that Florida and Michigan votes need to be counted. If Hillary's arguement is allowed to stand then this can give her enough popular votes to surpass Obama, and to make the arguement that nominating Obama is in direct opposition to the will of the majority of Democrat voters.
Obama has done nothing to fight this attack (or any attack by Hillary for that matter). How on earth can you count the votes of states were the lesser known candidate followed the rules and didn't campaign or even have his name on the ballot. Barack and his people should be arguing that if he had campaigned in these states that he would have trounsed Hillary (it doesn't matter if that is true or not). He should also be asking what the DNC is going to do next election cycle when 4 or 5 more states hold their primaries before Iowa and New Hampshire. Are you going to count their votes? Or, do you believe that Iowa and New Hampshire should maintain their traditional spot as the first primary states?
Obama's pathetic response to Hillary's attack (as well as his Rev. Wright response) leads me to believe this guy doesn't have the ability to defend himself, or to launch a strong counter attack. He kind of reminds me of Dukakis. Without the media making the case for him -- he is going to be in a lot of trouble.

As a blogger on Detroitfoxnews I review much of what has been said above. Michigan is truly in sad condition. The citizens there have inherited a welfare mess that goes back a long way. Not to mention the tax and spend structure that has the auto industry reeling.
Now, translate the effects felt there into the next 4 years nationally. The USA economy has a good deal of reslinecy (sic) but even that cannot stand a consistent, dedicated, effort to slow the USA standard of living to mud huts. The broad spectrum of change that MR. O is preaching will, in effect, cause the Michigan effect to be nationwide.
Better look out folks, the Left has the bit in their teeth and are going to press very hard this year. If they do not succeed now, it will be h... to pay in November.
