So after all that talk about the importance of new revenues the woman didn't even pay her own taxes? Shocking details are emerging today that indicate Michigan's most prominent tax-hike advocates, Governor Jennifer Granholm and John Cherry, are in trouble with the federal government for, get this... refusing to pay their taxes! The kind of trouble you don't get in for a minor offense. The kind of trouble that only comes after repeated notifications from the federal government.
A couple of sources indicate that Lansing's Channel 10 News will lead tonight's broadcast with the news that the United States Department of Treasury has slapped a $19,500 lien on the executive team's inaugural committee for failure to pay taxes. That means that the same Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Michigan who last year told working moms and dads that they had to fork over an extra $1.5 billion currently refuse to pay nearly twenty-thousand dollars in federal taxes.
A lien, boys and girls, is a big deal. It means that the federal government can seize assets and come to collect the cash themselves, by force.
No wonder Granholm and Cherry thought the government needed additional revenue. They knew there was a gaping hole in the budget created by their own chronic and ongoing delinquency. Though delinquency might be the wrong word. That implies that they're going to eventually pay their back taxes. The Granholm Cherry Inaugural Committee hasn't really had any parties to plan for the last few years. If they couldn't be bothered to pay their taxes to this point why on earth would they start now? (Though something tells me this story might provide just the kick in the pants the feds need to collect what the duo owes.)
This is the same Gov and LG who rammed a record shattering tax hike through the legislature last year, whose taxpayer funded budgets have increased by billions of dollars since 2002 and who are currently entrusted with the responsibility to budget and spend forty-three billion dollars this year alone. Tax dollars. Tax dollars normal folks paid to the government. On time. Apparently Granholm and Cherry have taken taxpayer funded paychecks so long they think that only the little people pay taxes.
Can't blame this one of John Engler, or the Chinese, or the Republicans, or President Bush, or NAFTA, CAFTA, the SHAFTA, the Cookie Monster, Big Foot... I'm sorry Madame Governor... Sasquatch...
But then again, this is the level of incompetence we've come to expect from the Granholm administration. Well, ok, so maybe it's a few feet deeper into the incompetence pool than most of their typical mismanagement.
The biggest tax hikers in the history of the State... tax cheats. Sorta sets a whole new standard for liberal hypocrisy doesn't it?
Oh dear god, if this is true, this has to be the best news that Republicans in Michigan have had in a decade.
This could EASILY lead to both of them being recalled if true.

He needs to move there and establish his residency so he can run for Governor. Michigan is a great match for him.
so that's not going to work in the near future.

That Ted Nugent was contemplating a run in 2010.
I know it sounds kind of silly, but it is fascinating to contemplate!
He might actually do OK. Can't be worse than what they have now.

The foolish forget but do not forgive.

Uhh, no offense to the Nuge, who at least is a talented musician, but he'd be the Mike Savage of Michigan. He'd have roughly the same chance of getting elected to something.

....the 2006 governor's race. Granholm seems about as incompetent as they come, plus they have almost double digit unemployment and a one state recession.
Was Dick DeVos really THAT bad of a candidate?!?
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
No, it has more to do with A. It was that bad of a year, B. Granholm, while a lousy governor, is a good campaigner, and before Sarah Palin was elected, was the best looking Governor in the country.

He is a brilliant and successful businessman, but he had a "deer in the headlights" quality whenever he got before a TV camera. I sat here at the computer during the first debate with Granholm, listening to the TV behind he. I thought he was winning. Then I turned around to watch -- within 5 minutes I knew the election was lost.
I watched it from the beginning, but from the moment he spoke I knew she had him. I don't know if he was nervous in front of the cameras, intimidated by her, or is just not good in that sort of forum, but your analogy to a deer in the headlights is perfect.
I think there are better candidates here, but they can't match his money. Rumor is that he is going to try again.
Didn't see him, but I know what you mean. For years I've wondered why we as a party pay so little attention to the impression our candidates make, either in person or on TV, but especially on TV.
We nominate people who can't put two sentences together and who look like it.
We nominate deer-in-the-headlights candidates and wonder why they lose to the likes of Granholm. We haven't yet learned the lesson of the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy debates: Sometimes style (and appearance) is more important than substance. Especially if the substance isn't very important anyway. And to true-believers, it isn't ever very important.
For example, Saxby Chambliss may be a great guy, but he looks and sounds like the old uncle that everybody avoids at the family reunion. Yet some people here want McCain to make him his VP partner. Bush 41 got lucky with Dan Quayle ONCE, after 8 years of Reagan. McCain doesn't have that luxury.
Oops. Another thread for that, but it illustrates the point.

I said Saxby Chambliss but I meant Haley Barbour.

you would even imply that Bigfoot(Skunk Ape, yes) could be responsible for someone not paying taxes. Now what I really wanna see is the IRS try and collect back taxes from the very stealthy and furtive big fella.

She should look up www.AssociatedTaxRelief.com That guy is supposed to be able to get the IRS to settle for pennies on the dollar. (just saw the ad -- had to comment)
I am totally shocked. Shocked! I tell you.

CongressCritter™: Never have so few felt like they were owed so much by so many for so little.
Michigan brought this on themselves with the current Governor and the fact it continues to re-elect Levin and now Stabenow adds to their problems.
Michigan's economy was (and remains) in the toilet
Unlike Granholm, Debbie is neither attractive nor a good campaigner
Debbie was barely able to knock-off Spence Abraham, the epitome of a candidate who got elected because of the political winds (it was 1994) and not their own viability as a candidate
And despite all that--she had a strong win over Bouchard.
Her win really makes me think Michigan is going to be a lost cause for a while. I wonder what the Republican/Democrat ratio is for people who leave the state?

Really - the whole article impies/asserts/virtually states that the governor has purposely been filing tax returns, taking a posse comatus (sp?) stance with shotguns and ak47's blocking nefarious black shirted feds collecting taxes? Its a commmittee that at best she probalby has tangential responsibility for and probably none for filing taxes. This is such a non-story unless there is more.
jkern
sorry for mis-spellings of "implies", "probably" and I meant non-filing of tex forms
It states very early (all but immediately) that this is a committee. It does not single out the Governor but also tags the LG. Both of their names are on this committee. The buck stops with them. There is no possible way to assume greater responsibility for accurate filings than to put your NAME on the thing!
But nice try.

Nice try at a smear for people who don't think much.
"That means that the same Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Michigan who last year told working moms and dads that they had to fork over an extra $1.5 billion currently refuse to pay nearly twenty-thousand dollars in federal taxes."
And where have "they" meaning these two in particular stated they "refuse" to pay the taxes.
"feds need to collect what the duo owes." How about what the inaugural committee owes.
these are just two examples of the kind of pointless slinging of non-information designed to inflame and confuse.
Those graphs are not only correct, the language you find questionable comes well after direct statements of fact. I'm not a reporter. I'm not a journalist. I have an opinion and I'm not afraid to share it. Since when did bloggers have to approach every sentence with clinical sterility?
As for the accuracy of the statements... they (Granholm and Cherry... the only people whose names are on the committee) have "refused" to pay their taxes for the last FIVE YEARS! The back taxes are owed from 2003 and the IRS told the local news that they will typically send FOUR distinct warning letters before slapping a lien on anyone. They REFUSED to pay them for years and through multiple warnings. Fact.
And your claim that the duo is not responsible for a committee bearing their name? If not Granholm and Cherry then who? No one on earth is MORE responsible. Their names. Their committee. Tax debts incurred during the course of business for their innaugural. Facts.
Pesky things, aren't they?

not paid her taxes in 12 [twelve] years when she was appointed/elected to be DC's non-voting representative in Congress. She blamed it on her husband, as I recall, or some such lame dodge.
Unless you understand liberals as BPD mental misfits and the liberalism of the far left as legalizing a crime spree on the earnings of the voting/taxable population, you haven't really understood the depth of the liberal sickness-of-mind. They want more government to be able to provide more jobs for their relatives and cronies. Services to the people are an afterthought and delivered in the most inefficient manner possible.
Michigan has been under the influence of crooked unions and special constituencies for more than the last forty years [I lived in Michigan & worked there in politics from '66-'69.]. George Romney & Engler were oases of sanity in a state which is destroying its own economy through bad and inefficient government. Supported by taxes pushed through by a wild and crazy lefty cabal.
Who is in charge of Michigan Legislature now? Do Republicans still hold it? Michigan is likely to lose a congressional seat in 2 years so I ask this with interest there as well.
