126 Days until Election Day

July 1, 2008

MORNING UPDATE:

OBAMA WILL BE A DISASTER FOR AMERICA AND MICHIGAN...I'm worried about the economy, jobs, my savings, my house...Obama's "old new-deal" policies are nothing less than a disaster waiting to happen.  If you like what Jennifer Granholm has done to Michigan you'll love what Obama will do to America.

OBAMA'S AMERICA IS CANADA...Obama is copying nationally Granholm's policies from Michigan, which were "born" in Canada...well here is a great op-ed piece on what Obama's vision of America is...Canada?

We canNOT tax ourselves out of a recession.

OBAMA...is an opportunistic and self-obsessed politician who will do and say anything to get elected.

REFORM MICHIGAN GOVERNMENT NOW A SCAM...Right Michigan does a great job of laying out the argument for NOT signing the petition.  If you're not willing read it...don't sign it.  This is BAD public policy.  What are they trying to hide?

MICHIGAN McCAIN OPERATIONS...are opening this week in Farmington Hills and our coordinated Victory Centers are being set up as we speak.  A central, McCain for President email has been set up for Michigan that goes to all the right staff if you are interested in volunteering or getting any information about the campaign.

GAS PRICES TOO HIGH...America is getting mad as politicians play lip service and will NOT take the steps to make us energy independent.  WE have huge oil reserves, we have domestic options, we need nuclear power and we would be less dependent on what is happening in the Middle East.  Demand action...now!!!

FLAT TAX REVOLUTION.... here is a great video about the Flat Tax and how it's working around the world...maybe we could learn something from this???

NUCLEAR POWER...America wants peace and prosperity. We need to become less dependent on foreign oil and have more domestic sources of power. Cheap, reliable and affordable energy will change the world. More below.

NO COMMENTARY OVER THE 4th OF JULY WEEKEND...we'll be back on Monday July 7th.... we will NOT have commentary July 4, 5 and 6th.

THE REST OF THE STORY:

NUCLEAR POWER...is the world's largest source of emission-free energy. Nuclear power plants produce no controlled air pollutants, such as sulfur and particulates, or greenhouse gases. The use of nuclear power in place of other energy sources helps to keep the air clean, preserve the Earth's climate, avoid ground-level ozone formation and prevent acid rain.

Nuclear power has important implications for our national security. Inexpensive nuclear power, in combination with fuel cell technology, could significantly reduce our dependency on foreign oil.

Nuclear power plants have experienced an admirable safety record. About 20% of electricity generated in the U.S. comes from nuclear power, and in the last forty years of this production, not one single fatality has occurred as a result of the operation of a civilian nuclear power plant in the United States. In comparison, many people die in coal mining accidents every year and approximately ten thousand Americans die every year from pollution related to coal burning.

Romney tops McCain veep list

By MIKE ALLEN
6/30/08 7:06 PM EST

In a surprise to many Republican insiders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice presidential prospect list for John McCain. But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick. "Romney as favorite" is the hot buzz in Republican circles, and top party advisers said the case is compelling.

Campaign insiders say McCain plans to name his running mate very shortly after Barack Obama does, as part of what one campaign planner called a "bounce-mitigation strategy."

Some on left target McCain's war record

By BEN SMITH | 6/30/08 4:54 AM EST

The highest-voltage third rail of this presidential campaign may not be race, sex or age, but John McCain's military service.

On Sunday, McCain's campaign issued a pair of outraged statements after retired general and Barack Obama supporter Wesley Clark said he didn't think that McCain's service as a fighter pilot and prisoner of war was relevant to running the country. Obama has consistently praised McCain's service, and called him "a genuine American hero."

McCain to talk free trade in Latin America

7/1/2008, 6:23 a.m. EDT
By BETH FOUHY
The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - John McCain has changed his mind about the president's tax cuts and drilling for oil off the U.S. coast, but the Republican presidential hopeful says his advocacy of free trade is unyielding.

McCain said he knows he has work to do to convince voters in states losing jobs to Mexico and other countries, such as Pennsylvania where he campaigned Monday, that free-trade agreements will benefit them and their families over time.

The Court vs. Voters

By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Tuesday, July 1, 2008; Page A11

If the long conservative era that began with Ronald Reagan's election is over, will the judges appointed during the right's ascendancy be able to block, frustrate and undermine the efforts of a new progressive majority?

Consider this analysis from two influential journalists describing Supreme Court justices as "the last hope of the conservative interests in the United States."

Lawmakers to finish up state budget after break
Legislators to return July 16 after failing to wrap up energy, health care, spending plans.

Mark Hornbeck and Gary Heinlein / Detroit News Lansing Bureau
Tuesday, July 1, 2008

LANSING -- While state lawmakers pulled a weekend all-nighter to write the state budget, reform Michigan's energy policy and revamp its health care industry, they didn't actually finish any of those jobs.

They'll return to the Capitol on July 16 to tie up some loose ends. The $44 billion budget for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1 is mostly done, but yet to be approved are some of the most critical spending bills: public schools, roads and revenue sharing to local governments, among others.

Private prison food idea blasted
Head of state employee union calls suggestion a 'disservice' to Michigan.

Charlie Cain / Detroit News Lansing Bureau
Tuesday, July 1, 2008

LANSING -- The head of a state employee union Monday issued a blistering response to a government audit suggesting Michigan could save tens of millions of dollars in prison food costs by hiring a private company to provide the meals.

"The Auditor General has done a great disservice to the people of Michigan," said Albert Garrett, president of Michigan Council 25 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Garrett said prison food service workers "are doing an outstanding job and they're a real bargain for taxpayers. They do not deserve to be attacked with unfounded propaganda from an agency which is supposed to provide thorough, non-partisan analysis to state government."

Report: Michigan tax revenue hurt by misclassified contract workers

By KATHY BARKS HOFFMAN
Associated Press
June 30, 2008

LANSING - Michigan has a significant number of workers who are being misclassified as independent contractors, hurting tax revenues and breaking state laws, according to a report to be given Tuesday to Gov. Jennifer Granholm. A draft copy of the report was obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

In it, the Interagency Task Force on Employee Misclassification said workers who are being listed wrongly by businesses as independent contractors rather than employees aren't being covered by unemployment insurance or prevailing wage laws. Taxpayers are being hurt because businesses who misclassify workers aren't paying the taxes they should, it said, and some misclassified workers aren't paying the income taxes they owe.

Cockrel: FBI probe won't deter ouster

David Josar, Leonard N. Fleming and Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News
Tuesday, July 1, 2008

DETROIT -- Reaction was mostly muted Monday among City Council members stung by revelations that the FBI is investigating the panel's approval of a $47 million contract to handle sludge removal. But Council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr., whose chief of staff is a focus of the probe, vowed the new scandal won't derail efforts to oust Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

"One of the things people have asked is how can council proceed with forfeiture hearings when there's now this cloud of suspicion hanging over it," Cockrel said, a few days after sources confirmed federal agents are investigating the council's November approval of a contract with Synagro Technologies Inc. of Houston. "In my view, I don't think we should deviate from that or anything else that we do. We can't let city business or our aspect of city business grind to a halt because this thing is out there.

A flood tide of scandals is staggering city government

BY BILL McGRAW

First, the prosecutor charges the mayor with serious felonies. Then the City Council tries to kick him out of office, and city government lurches for five months through name-calling, confusion, at least five other related court actions and scathing national publicity.

Then it becomes known that some council members are under FBI investigation in connection with a multimillion-dollar sludge-treatment project. Then, BAM! A lightning strike ignites a fire at City Hall and shuts the building down until at least July 7.

Michigan's minimum wage rises to $7.40 Tuesday

6/30/2008, 4:43 p.m. EDT
By DAVID EGGERT
The Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Starting Tuesday, hundreds of thousands of Michigan workers who make at or just above the minimum wage are getting a raise.

That's 25 cents more an hour to help Adam Richard, a cashier at Ned's Bookstore in East Lansing, cover the rising cost of groceries as well as gasoline that now rings up at more than $4 a gallon.
