MORNING UPDATE:
139 Days until Election Day
June 18, 2008
MORNING UPDATE:
HOUSE DEMOCRATS CONTINUE TO ABUSE THEIR POWER...in over 350 specific cases, the state House Democrats have refused to consider Republican amendments and requests for record roll call votes. An unbelievable abuse of power...and the press just stands by??? So no reforms...no cuts...no debate...just Democrat power grab and partisan legislation.
LANSING PRESS CORP COMPLACENT...in the House Democrats abuses. They are just ignoring these actions. Why? If the press won't report it...if they allow for these games...they have lost all credibility. Ask your local reporter why it's not news?
CONGRESSMAN McCOTTER...and I had a chance to attend a series of events over the last few days and he laid out the purpose and principles of the Republican Party as articulated by the Republican House Policy Committee...in a very straight forward manner:
Purpose: The Republican Party exists to keep America the greatest nation on earth by advancing liberty and preserving tradition.
Principles:
1. Our liberty is from God, not the government
2. Our sovereignty is in our souls, not our soil
3. Our security is from strength, not surrender
4. Our prosperity is from the private sector, not the public sector
5. Our truths are self-evident, not relative
GINGRICH...3 WAYS TO LOWER GAS PRICES...a practical, realistic approach to lowering the price of gas...NOW!
TRANSPARENCY IN GOVERNMENT SPENDING...is a critical effort by officials at the state level, led by state Rep. Jack Hoogendyk, to empower taxpayers to become fiscal watchdogs by making expenditures available on the Internet. Michigan needs comprehensive legislation mandating the creation of a website detailing state expenditure information. Attorney General Mike Cox and Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land have unilaterally posted their departments expenditures online...the Republicans who run departments...without legislation or being required to do so. Governor...Democrats...what are you trying to hide???

The following stories and more are available online.
Knollenberg outlines plans to lower gas prices
TROY - U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg was in Troy Monday to outline a plan to combat rising gas prices, which includes his proposed "New Big Three" Act that would allocate hundreds of millions in grants to promote energy-efficient research and development. "These high gas prices are totally unacceptable," Knollenberg said.
WSJ: McCain's Offshore Request
Behold, a miracle: Public anger over $4 gas is forcing at least some of our political class to confront their energy contradictions. Last week, Republicans Jim Walsh of New York and Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland -- two longstanding opponents of offshore drilling -- asked for a mulligan. We can now add John McCain to the roll: In a speech in Houston yesterday, the Senator finally came out in favor of increasing domestic energy supplies
Suit expected in ouster attempt against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick
DETROIT -- The Detroit Law Department has been told to file a suit in Wayne County Circuit Court to stop a City Council attempt to force Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office.
Conservation group seeks dime deposit for water and juice to boost recycling
LANSING, Mich. -- A group is reviving efforts to expand Michigan's 10-cent deposit law to include bottled water and juice containers.
EDITORIAL: Bush's European tour
President Bush's farewell trip to Europe offered an opportunity to mark the recent rapprochement in trans-Atlantic relations - Americans and Europeans are once again working in greater harmony toward common objectives. During his European visit, the president conferred with leaders such as Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He also met Pope Benedict XVI and Queen Elizabeth II. Mr. Bush sought primarily to garner greater support for his policies in Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. He succeeded in cajoling European leaders closer to accepting his viewpoint.
Op-Ed: Playing politics with school vouchers
We have yet to see much evidence of Sen. Barack Obama's oft-discussed willingness to buck the special interests and work with those across the aisle. Recent public plotting against the nation's first federal school-voucher program by some Democrats in Congress provides the presumptive presidential nominee with an opportunity to show his valor. A decision whether to speak up in support of the program's continuation can give voters an idea of whose interests Mr. Obama's acts on when pushed against the wall: his teachers-union funders or low-income kids stuck in rotten public schools
Petition drive likely won't reach its goal
A group seeking a hodgepodge of reforms to Michigan government through a ballot proposal probably won't gather enough signatures by July 7 to make it to the ballot, says a group that recently scaled back its own petition drive for a parttime Legislature.
Obama Gets the Gore Ticket Question
TAYLOR, Mich. - The front pages of today's newspapers here feature prominent photographs of former Vice President Al Gore and Senator Barack Obama, smiling broadly at an endorsement rally Monday evening. Could they possibly be a Democratic dream team for the fall?
Poll: Obama has slight lead over McCain in Florida
Obama wins Florida's youngest voters by a wide margin, while he and McCain split those age 35 and up. Nearly one in four say they are less likely to support McCain because of his age; if elected he would be 72 when sworn in as president. One in 20 says the same about Obama's being black. Whites back McCain, 50 percent to 40 percent, while virtually all blacks support Obama. Independents lean toward Obama by 10 percentage points, and more of them oppose Hillary Rodham Clinton being Obama's running mate than support it.
Obama, McCain abandon energy stances
As voters pay ever-higher gas prices, Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama are fleeing from their previous energy policy stances, with the Republican embracing expanded drilling and the Democrat seeking to punish energy companies he voted to reward just three years ago.
Kilpatrick says 1,300 would be laid off if tunnel sale is blocked
If the Detroit City Council continues to block Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's proposed sale of the city's half of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel to patch the city's budget, then Kilpatrick will lay off 1,300 non-uniform city employees, a top Kilpatrick aide said today.
Terrorism Takes Center Stage as Obama Responds to McCain Camp's Charges
It was only a matter of time, but the McCain and Obama campaigns today engaged more directly than ever before on one of the central disagreements between them -- the high stakes question of how to pursue Islamic terrorists.
