Why does it make a difference?, you ask rhetorically

Disclaimer: This is my first Liberals in the Mist diary.
What difference does the CNN/youtube debacle make? After all, these guys want to be President of the United States; if they can't handle a few hot questions, whatever the source, how can they possibly handle the job?
Well, good point. The successful candidate is going to have to handle a lot higher tougher questions than those.
But it's not about the questions and answers in some silly debate. It's about the integrity, or the lack thereof, of the electoral process, and the Democrats' and CNN's apparent lack of respect for same. This is not a threat to Republicans or to the conservative movement, it is a threat to our collective freedom. I am frankly shocked and amazed that liberals don't share conservatives' outrage.
The whole "tough questions" deal evaporates when you remember that Hillary and the boyz do their best to control the questions in their own debates. So we have Democrat debates with Democrat plants and Republican debates with Democrat plants. These people seem unwilling to participate in a process unless the fix is in. That does not trouble you?
In 2004, we had a major mainstream media outlet colluding with Dem operatives on an obviously contrived piece of "evidence" against a presidential candidate; that did not trouble you?
A major national push on the part of the Democratic party is the extension of suffrage to illegal aliens, incarcerated felons and cartoon characters (via ACORN); this does not trouble you?
What scares me most about liberals these days is not our obvious differences of opinion about policy and the role of government. That's why we have politics, to work these disagreements out, preferably in a rational, respectful manner.
No, what scares me about liberals these days is that they have become so reflexively partisan that they are completely unable to recognize threats to our democracy and to our freedoms, as long as they come in a liberal cloak.
They won't recognize Fascism until it bites them in the a$$.
I blame the left's poor mental health.
...a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right...

I hope Im not thread jacking but did cooper and cnn catch any flak for what they did? Because I didnt hear about it on MSM channels last night.
It has nothing to do with freedom, but does have everything to do with political advantage, obfuscation and control.
Modern liberalism is actually a form of fascism in disguise (case in point is political correctness and the politics of personal destruction), and liberals don't care in the least as long as they hold the reigns of power and control the PartisanPress.™

Controlling the message is the message these days. I really thought Gore was going to jump in, and I thought Fred was taking a play right out of the same book.
It seems a winning strategy these days is to somehow be front and center without having to stand in front of CNN or the rest of them.
It's not limited to Democrats. Bush is near legendary in controlling what questions he's asked.
That fake FEMA news conference? I want to know who was pointing that TV camera and what stations were getting the feed. Did they not know what was going on?
I'm new here and I had to laugh out loud at the 'fascist' statement because that's used extensively by liberals too.
(Yes, I'm a liberal; but I'm trying to find common ground. Wish us luck.)
These idiots would take away our freedoms while parading around proclaiming the best of intentions.
You have just been programmed to think that the Right are the guys in the black hats, and that Liberals are pure in heart.
Just keep your eyes open and your brain engaged.

(I know, too late).
"These idiots would take away our freedoms while parading around proclaiming the best of intentions."
Are you talking about liberals in general?
just the elected ones who babble about having more ideas than America could afford, or there being Two Americas, or the We'll Lead the Most Ethical and Open and Fair Congress in history.
Those kind.
If there were more Joe Liebermanns, John Kitzhabers, amongst the Democrats in Congress, we'd probably have an ounce more respect for the liberals I mention above.
So far, you've said nothing that would warrant banning. If you ask a legitimate question that isn't intended to create a dialogue, it could be bad.
Enough said.
I can't stand Liebermann, much the same as you might feel about Gordon Smith.
I can't stand any of them, now that I think of it. Ironic, for someone active on politican blogs.
No, I'm not one to demonize all liberals. I think most of them, including you, have the best of intentions. That being said, I also distinguish between liberals and the Left, the America-hating intellectual elite and successors to the legacy of the Soviet bloc. And too many liberals fall under the influence of the Left.
And by "taking away freedoms", I'll tell you specifically what I'm talking about: socialized medicine, taking away firearms, diluting parental authority over children and children's health, stifling political speech, ceding national sovereignty over commercial, environmental and military issues to the U.N., extending suffrage to incarcerated felons and illegal aliens...
Shall I go on?
There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life. - Frank Zappa
But first, I actually have to ask a stoopid question because I'm a little fuzzy on what some of the terms mean since the liberal blogs rarely use them. I take the term "intellectual elite" as meaning snobbish, is that too simple? If that is what it means then we have something in common. About every sixth time I'm on DailyKos I get troll rated for 24 hours. It's usually due to one of two things: someone posted a Pollyanna diary about how John Edwards is going to save humanity and resurrect the dead and I enjoy loathing John Edwards. The other reason I get a day off is probably because someone has "scolded" someone else for asking a "stupid" question and would they not post anymore until they "learn to spell" and be a GIANT ASS just like them. Oh, and if someone posts in half French and half English. I usually pretend they insulted my family and I insult theirs right back at them.
By "Left", I assume you mean leftist; as in socialist/communist. If I have that right then you may be surprised at how few of them there are - at least openly. Actually, I take that back: I may be sensitized to it. You won't find them calling for a collective, but you will find many clamoring for unions. I'm not a big fan of unions and strangely enough, many union supporters would vehemently deny it is socialism. I think it is in this day and age, though it would be nice if the 35-hour companies treated their employees to medical. The constitution does say we have a right to life. (I'm glad it's not a privilege.)
As far as guns go, I think that is changing quite a bit. It's not even an option for me. I have a 22 rifle that I consider an essential tool. I have grain, and therefore I potentially have rats. The cats take care of any mice, but rats are much smarter and I don't have the time to wait for a trap or a cat. Poison is out of the question so if I see a rat it's ka-blam for him. It's not the grain they eat, it's the germs they can leave behind. Are there too many handguns? Probably. Would I ever deny anyone the right to carry one? Never. I stand by my statement that it is less of an issue these days. I rarely hear noise about the issue on DKos.
I'm going to say the same thing about parental authority. I may be wrong on that but again, I don't hear much noise about it. I did hear a fair amount of outrage recently about the JW youth who refused medical treatment and died of Leukemia, but... c'mon. I put that in the oddity category.
stifling political speech is by no means owned by the liberals.
The U.N. was a well intentioned dream gone wrong. They should just have a wake for it and get it over-with. I personally think something else has to take its place. There is a use for a neutral, world arbiter, but it has to be devoid of all politics, which means it will never be able to establish ground rules. I don't know what the solution is. Our own application of foreign policy is... chaotic at best. I think we have some some real damage with it recently. I think it has unsettled many countries and has made things difficult in other areas.
I want to hold off commenting about illegal aliens right now. The winds have picked up and we may loose power.
I want to address your use of the word "Freedom" and tell you how the same word is being used by liberals. It's weird how different they are.
I promise to get back. I want to get this posted before the lights go out.
I mean (and I think I'm in the majority here) those guys in higher education and Al Gorish people (ghost book writers who give speeches) who seem to truly and honestly believe that if only the more highly evolved of us ran the gov't (read: more intellectual elitists) that they could gift the stoopid, knuckle draggers among us (read: Republicans) with a better life. 'Cause you know they know a lot more than us.
RE: The UN. Several people have proposed a League of Nations comprised entirely of nations of free people living under a democracy. A place where Venezuela would have been and would now be voted out of. No, that'll never happen, but it would be nice.
I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
Otherwise you would just call them snobs, right?
Yeah, I run into them fairly often at DKos. You can't argue with them either, unless you enjoy beating your head against a wall.
It's literally the ivory tower syndrome. It isn't exclusive to the left either. In fact, the "type" is not even limited to intellectuals. I don't care how smart someone thinks he or she is, they are no match for many fundamentalists arguing on their turf.
Metallica has a couple of lines in a song that kind of sums it up:
"Hearing what you want to hear,
Knowing only what you heard."
It's not limited to Democrats. Bush is near legendary in controlling what questions he's asked.
Shirley, you jest!
Legendary among whom -- liberals? Because I have witnesses the most biased and stoopid questions thrown at him by the Washington Press Corp on a regular basis -- since his first days in office.
The press assumes (we ALL know about that word) he is a stupid frat-boy who is nothing more than a puppet for Darth Cheney, and who would never have gotten into office in the first place if he had not stolen the election and if his father had not been president.
His press conferences degenerate into, "Do you still beat your wife?" type assumptions that guarantee bad press coverage, and headlines designed to make him look stoopid.
NOT a single Republican candidate or officeholder could EVER hope to avoid ANY scrutiny the way the junior senator from NY has for the past -- well, all of her adult life!
========
Considering where the good doctor's head was, when practicing medicine, is it any wonder that the man has issues?
That wasn't what I meant. Bush gave a speech in Beaverton, OR... I think it was for 2004. Because not a heck of a lot happens in Portland from day to day, the process was covered by the local media. They reported on the vetting process for who was allowed into the hall to listen to the speech and ask questions. The didn't get into the specifics of the security for obvious reasons, they just acknowledged that security was part of the vetting. They also said a big part of it was to "carefully control the message and to pre-select the questions he would be asked."
I'm sure I can dig up links of similar instances, and I think there is even a YouTube video of a screw-up he made where he let the cat out of the bag during a supposedly open Q&A session.
I'm sure he's not the first, though.
I never said Bush was stoopid, and I know he doesn't care a lick about being hung with that tag because I'm sure he uses it to his advantage - which is pretty smart. I do think he could be more open-minded, but what do you expect me to say?
They all can.
I don't hate Bush, but I can't stand Cheney.
Or Rumsfeld. I used to block the ears of any small children that were around when he spoke on TV.
Rumsfeld was pitched as brilliant. I want my money back on that one.

My question is for Barack Obama. Isn't it time to ban the eating of red meat? I mean, it's worse than smoking. We raise these poor defenseless animals, then we shoot them and grind them up. We're no better than Saddam and his shredders.
Oh, I get another one? OK, this one is for Hillary Clinton. Senator, perhaps you remember me. I once asked your husband what he would do to take care of us when he became, you know, our father. If you become our mother, will you be making Thanksgiving dinner for -all- of our 350 million people?
Tap tap. Is this thing on? Oh good. Yo! John Edwards! What are your plans for eradicating carbon-based life forms if you become president? Also, do you think it would help the Polar Bears if we donated our ice cubes to the Eskimos?

Mr. Romney, instead of torturing the suspect and run the risk of killing that valuable fount of information, don't you think it would be better to saw off the arms of his children in from of him to extract the information?
And Rudy, do you think the US wanted Saddam to use the chemical weapons technology that we gave him? It seems to me that we did, why else give it to him? In light of that, why are chemical weapons bad?
Or, Mr. Reagan; when you supplied both sides of a war with advanced weapons, what message were you sending? Could that breed resentment in any way?
Mr. McCain, if a terrorist walks into a nightclub in the USA and yells, "Avenge Iraq!" just before she pulls the chord, what country would you attack?
Mr. Huckabee, isn't Israel a democracy only if you are Jewish?
Mr. Tancredo, given the overwhelmingly superior firepower our military has, with overlapping echelons of advanced weapons systems and communications on land, sea, air, and space, would you promise to develop a new weapons system that can counter the electric garage door opener that we were so poorly prepared for before you invade Iran? Also, my broker told me to ask you which companies you will favor with no-bid, cost-plus contracts?
Now, before I am banned, you say you are an expert on chickens; do you cook them too? I started raising them because they are cool (I used eggs as an excuse). I was reluctant to kill and eat one until I started getting overrun. Now they are quite tasty. I started with Rhode Island hens and then a guy I bought a horse from inflicted me with a Top Hat Special rooster. Funniest and oddest bird you have ever seen. I have to bash that... cock with a trash lid every once in a while because it is so aggressive. I've since collected some weird chickens and hatched even more. Chickens are great but I have to be careful with roosters around the grand-kids.
But answers are easy.
1. Only if we can find them quickly otherwise start other means until they can be procured.
2. Yes we did, on the Iranians. Why did you think we gave them to him.
3. Should of asked that before they held our embassy hostage. After that they get to find out what happens when we get resentful.
4. You should ask the Arab and Christian Israelis that not only vote but hold office. Or perhaps you want to ask a Knesset member from the United Arab List party ?
5. People are still regularly killed by knives. Somehoe we haven't been able to do anything about them either. Maybe you could name another company that could provide what KBR did ?

all in all. They are certainly intelligent. I know I will enjoy arguing them over time.
I hope you know that the Israeli question was not asked out of any ill feelings or bias on my part. Many people are very sensitive to those kind of questions and some lash out with charges of anti-semitism. It's a complicated world over there, as your answer to the question reveals. I was surprised to learn there is a Jew in the Iranian parliament (http://www.jewishjournal.com/home/preview.php?id=16965) and a community of 20,000 Jews living in Iran, apparently without much difficulty. So is it all politics?

I'm not claiming an expert status, but the best way to control a grouchy cock is to twist his little head off. Sorry gamecock.
And earlier you commented on plucking them. I much prefer skinning them just like a squirrel or rabbit. You don't have that nasty wet feather smell, or the smell of burning hair, it's much quicker and we never eat the skin anyway. You should try it.
And you should try Buff Orpingtons. Nice large brown eggs, good setters, gentle natured, plumb tender meat. Or Barred Rock. Also large brown eggs, lousy setters, but plump and hardy.
Both kinds are also larger than can be carried off by most hawks and owls.
I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
Buff Orpingtons have plump, tender meat. But I guess it is plumb tasty.
I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
I was thinking of a starting a small dual purpose flock.
Also, have you ever mixed in Guineas or pheasant?
They are really good layers, but the roosters are known to be crabby.
Sometimes the hatchery will run a special where you don't get to pick the exact breed you want, but you can select a category. For example, a heavy breed straight run mix, which might be half price or better. That's sometimes a good way to try out new breeds.
We didn't have good luck with guineas because they fly and our pen isn't covered, so it was impossible to keep them in without keeping their wings clipped. They also seemed determined to nest in the woods and the coons were much better about finding their nests than I was.
Pheasants are also flyers. Additionally, they have to fly, so you would have to build one of those big netted pens like quail pens to keep them in.
We have had good luck with ducks. They lay enormous eggs which are just as good as a chicken egg, except the shells are really hard. And they eat flies. Lots of flies. They can catch them in the air. You'd have to see it to believe it.
I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
and the three white ducks that adopted us. I had my head underground replacing a coupling on my well and when I looked up three baby ducks were walking out of the barn and fell right to sleep on the cool cement landing. I think someone dumped them on us. We live near a dead-end with a river on one side and people sometimes dump pets there.
Unfortunately, two of the ducks were killed by a raccoon and I was pissed because it was ugly. The ducks socialized in the day but they didn't like the coop and preferred the barn at night. It was stupid of me and it was unfortunate that one of my grand-daughters found them because she was vested in the ducks and kept their pool clean. The raccoon just shredded two of the ducks but the third was untouched.
My turkey is a Bronze tom and he's huge but friendly. He'll sneak up behind and peck at the rivets on my jeans. I jump out of my skin every time. We've had people freeze in our driveway not realizing they can just walk past the turkey. If I could teach him to growl, then my dog would officially be useless.
We had a peacock come visit us once. I don't know where it came from or where it went, but I think he found the yard too crowded.
I've heard mixed things on guineas. The people who like them really seem to be into them.
My birds totally free range and I lock them up at night. I need more chickens like Kennedy needed a parade in Dallas, but I go to a fair and see these great birds and just have to get one. I will have to do like you and build a pen because Rhonda is getting ambivalent about them. If I don't power wash every day... it's not that I'm scared of her, but... I power wash every day.
have more meat, but lay fewer eggs than the Rhode Island Reds. The Rhode Island Reds lay extra-large brown eggs, and I've found that they lay more double-yolked eggs than the White Leghorns, which lay extra-large white eggs, but have less meat than either of the Reds and can be pretty aggressive.
That said, my favorites are the Barred Rocks and White Rocks. They're beautiful birds, extremely friendly, and they act like pets. They lay plenty of large brown eggs, and they average 7-8 lbs. However, they really like to free-range, and they aren't very good setters.
If egg production is your priority and occasionally you might want a little meat, I like the Rhode Island Reds. They can lay up to five eggs a week, but like the Rocks, they aren't very good setters. If you're looking to grow your flock, New Hampshire Reds lay up to four eggs a week, and they are better setters.
Vladimir, I apologize for the threadjack and for using such fowl language.

Nice large brown eggs
People actually pay a lot more for those in the store, which I find amazing. If we were used to eating brown eggs they would probably be paying extra to get the white ones. I don't eat the shells so it doesn't really make a difference to me.

they seem to taste better, the yokes do not break as easily. a lot of times with white eggs the yoke breaks just when you crack the egg. That never happens with brown eggs. I like mine over medium, and i get a lot less busted yokes.

Fresh eggs have much stronger yolks than older eggs. The eggs we get from the supermarket seem to have a lot of age on them by the time we buy them. It could be that the brown ones are fresher at your supermarket. Nothing from the supermarket compares with fresh eggs, though, whether the shells are white or brown. I've raised both varieties and I know I wouldn't be able to tell the difference without looking at the shells.

Compared to fresh eggs. My chickens free range and eat tasty bugs and lay (mostly brown) eggs with bright orange yolks.
I don't even use oyster shell, just scratch and complete layer and the shells are thick. I have a Rock hen that lays white eggs that are thinner but she is as prolific as my Reds. I have one Red that is still laying double-yolks.
I prefer brown eggs.

which is being perfected in the RS laboratories as we speak.
Pending the report, my gut says he will limit us to carrot juice & vitamins.
Has anyone else noticed they make clothes smaller these days?
Thanks for the tip. I'll probably botch the first one. Chicken came in packages until about a year and half ago. The first chicken I killed and ate was actually a rooster because the first hatch I had (I didn't even know she was setting) produced 6 roosters which really upset the harmony (and I suspect my neighbors).
How did I kill it? Reluctantly, and with a gun.
If anyone is reading this and curious, chickens don't have to be hunted. They die just fine with a vigorous snap of the neck. One good snap of the wrist.
Needless to say I mangled that first one and plucked it cold. Live and learn.
You are right about the smell, I'm pretty fast at it now.
Again, thanks for the tip. I'm going to do that the next time I make curried chicken.
Lay it across a stump or a chunk of wood and whack it off with a hatchet. Sometimes I use a sharp butcher knife and hook its head in the picnic table crack so I can get its to its neck easier.
Anyway, they bleed out better and that will make the meat better.
You can tell a hen is going broody by her clucking. She will walk around going cluck cluck for a couple of days, then start to set. Put a few golf balls under her to make sure she's settled in, then give her your biggest fertile eggs.
You can also let her set on rock eggs or something heavy like an egg for 3 weeks then slip some day old hatchling chicks under her if you want to try a new breed or ducks. Just don't use chicks over a couple of days old, or they'll be too independent to work well. And I usually do the old switcheroo at night to make my trick work better.

I have enough as it is right now. We are getting better at taking inventory. I have a frizzle (worthless) that is determined to set on any and all eggs that it can.
the thing that puzzles me is I will do the round up of eggs and I will find them in their Favorite Spot of the Month and the counts seem right, but then I will catch the Frizzle sitting on a pile of brown eggs in a remote place - like under the feeding trough for the horses where I can't see her. They are certainly not her eggs.
Where did she get the eggs?! I can see losing track of an egg here or there, but the last hatch was 11 chicks!
Wilco tried to sell me an incubator. Said I needed it to hatch chickens successfully. I told the sales-guy about the Bronze turkey they sold me and how it stares at itself in in the bumper of my truck all day. I think they were brothers.
Given the governments record just what makes you think it needs more of my money and can use it better than I can ?
You can give that one to any democrat and far too many Republicans.

The messianic zeal that leads to "by any means necessary" makes the modern Left absolutely terrifying. CNN believes what it did was perfectly justified for the better good.
