Both Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) and his sister, Betty Jefferson, are reportedly implicated as co-conspirators in the money-laundering indictment of State Sen. Derrick Sheppard (D - Marrero).

Bill Jefferson is currently awaiting trial on 16 counts of bribery. He is also awaiting the Democratic National Convention, where as a superdelegate he will help select the party's Presidential nominee. His brother Mose was recently indicted in a separate public bribery case involving the Orleans Parish School Board.

Senator indicted in fraud case

Derrick Shepherd, once considered a rising political star who won three elections and basked in the glory of his military service, was indicted Thursday for allegedly helping a woman who orchestrated an illegal scheme to launder $2 million for her construction bond business.

[...snip...]

Shepherd entered the 2nd Congressional District race in 2006, finishing third with the support of a wide coalition of Jefferson Parish politicians [including the late Sheriff Harry Lee]. Investigators have been exploring the possibility that incumbent Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, referred [bond broker Gwendolyn] Moyo to Shepherd as some sort of reward for Shepherd's abrupt endorsement of the congressman.

Betty Jefferson is implicated, sources say

With regard to Betty Jefferson, the indictment says that Moyo funneled $320,000 in four transactions to accounts belonging to "XYZ Services," a company controlled by "Public Official B" (Betty Jefferson, according to sources) and "associated" with "Public Official A" (William Jefferson, the sources say).

different level of corruption?

Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

RedState and DailyKos both by Randolph Finder

As best as I can tell, the dislike for William Jefferson is about the same at Kos as it is here. In some ways I think DailyKos wants him gone *more* because he stands in the way of the effort to describe the Republicans as the corrupt ones.

OTOH, I just don't understand politics in Louisiana. For all I know, Jefferson is recycling the bumper stickers from the 1991 Gubernatorial contest. "Vote for the Crook. It's important"

has been written on the subject and still I don't think anyone understands Louisiana politics.

I would imagine that Edwards or one of the Long brothers (Huey or Earl) who served as governor might understand it, but few others...

And as an aside I learned that Huey was killed by his own bodyguards.( according to the coments) Its hard to get good help.

Their condemnation of Jefferson is underwhelming.

Some discussion of the 'victory' over the executive in the congressional search issue ("Huzzah!"), and one post from last July suggesting impeachment.

Their search feature turned up almost nothing.

I call bulls**t, Randolph. I'm going to continue to post any news on Bill or the entire corrupt Jefferson clan.

Now, pass the eye Listerine.

For whatever little it is by Han Pritcher

For whatever little it is worth, here are my thoughts.

Corruption is corruption, and a congressman on the take is a threat to the integrity of our government. I undertand the concerns regarding a search of a congressman's office and the chilling effect this sort of thing could have on an independent legislature (remember, it wasn't just Democratic congressmen to decry the search!), but that by no means I excuse his alleged behavior.

If there's enough to sustain an indictment that was collected while respecting the rules of evidence and the Constitution as applied to the subject, then try his ass! If found guilty, I'll gladly cheer his time in prison, as I'm sure he'll have earned it. Corruption is more important to me than tribalism, whoever does it (and is shown to have done it) should be drummed out of office and punished for it.
