Congressman Don Young: Rolling Stone Magazine's 3rd Worst Congressman

By Wubbies World Posted in Comments (21) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

Republican Congressman Don Young from Alaska has made the fine distinction of being rated #3 on Rolling Stone Magazine's "10 Worst Congressman". How is that for a stellar resume item?

So, what do they have to say about him? Try this on for size:

Even the conservative Heritage Foundation called one of Young's bridges a "national embarrassment." [Ed. He had two "bridges to nowhere"] But the congressman refused to scrap the projects. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when Sen. John McCain proposed that Young redirect his prized pork money to help rebuild New Orleans, Young accused his detractors of "ignorance and stupidity." The victims of Katrina, he suggested, "can kiss my ear!"

Then it concludes with this statement that just makes a conservative cringe and then get angry:

As for his pork projects, Young -- who tried his hand at gold mining in Alaska before realizing that the real riches lay in Congress -- apparently feels no shame. When someone suggested that Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska had outdone him in bringing home federal dollars, Young just laughed. "If he's the chief porker," the congressman said, "I'm upset."

Read the entire write up on him. He's an embarrassment!

The only Dem making the list is Rep. "That's not my frozen money" Jefferson. Is this media bias or just an indication of how low we've fallen since 1994? (sigh).

That's nothing new - actually it goes back to the 60s.

I was actually despondent that this may not be a case of media bias but rather some pretty accurate analyis.

... I specifically said, "Then there is this story from the Wall Street Journal Opinion page from right before the 2006 election." in my blog post.

Now that you have demonstrated your inability to read, or that you do not care what I actually wrote, how about trying to be constructive.

I am growing tired of knee jerk temper tantrums.

"Crapola" is a dig at Rolling Stone, not at you. If Bill Jefferson is the only Dem congressman worth mentioning in a "10 Worst" list, that is ipso facto crapola.

Now, if you will kindly point me to the "WSJ 2006" reference in your diary...

Yea, the name is not a "possessive" though as a reflection "my world" it can be I suppose. The name is actually one I was tagged with as a 5 year old child and it stuck with me through my teen years. I just thought I would use it here.

I apologize for the miss understanding on your intent in your response. I got snippy over it and I do apologize.

As far as the 2006 WSJ reference, here it is:
The Minority Maker: The clever GOP strategy for defeat in November.

Normally, I am not so sloppy as to not provide a link. I will do better in the future.

I was using two tabs and working on two separate posts. One post about Don Young, and the other about Jerry Lewis. I have been confused posting on one post and the other. My 2006 reference was in the Jerry Lewis posting.

I was just getting ready to elaborate and was looking it up, and noticed I was responding to one post while I was on the page for the other post.

Please allow me to humbly get my responses back on the same page. I did not make a 2006 reference in the Don Young post and for that you are correct.

...he's good enough for me.

I understand the confusion. No big deal.

Once again, Don Young has not been charged with ANYTHING. The mischaracterization of the two bridges has become so universal that it is now in the realm of KnownFact. I'm not going to defend the Ketchikan Bridge beyond saying that it is no "porkier" than one Helluva lot of other transportation projects sponsored or earmarked by politicians that don't seem to earn the special ire that Young does. Stupid Republicans joined the Left Coast Democrats in opposing the Knik Arm Bridge so they could wrap themselves in the FisCon mantle - while still making sure their districts got plenty of transportation money. The Knik Arm Bridge from the Port of Anchorage to the highway system avoids the congestion of downtown Anchorage and the drive around Knik Arm to connect with the highway system. This would allow fast container ships to unload quickly in ANC which is directly on the Great Circle route to the interior US and cargo could be trucked by a shorter and more direct route than the slog all the way across the Pacific to the Left Coast's Democrat/mafia/union controlled ports. I'm sure those states will show their appreciation to all the Republicans who helped them avoid the competition.

And, once again, that $1.87 on the dollar figure is for ALL federal spending in the landmass called Alaska on maps, almost half of which is owned by the federal government or Federal Indians, not by the State of Alaska. For that figure to mean anything, you have to take out what the Fed spends on its huge military and USCG presence here, all the parks, preserves, national forests, etc.

Don Young's background and demeanor is not much different from that of his constituents; there really aren't a lot of soft-spoken, well-mannered, non-confrontational metrosexual guys here. And there aren't even today a lot of squishy white-collar jobs for pencil-necked geeks. I've never run tugs, but I too have a Captain's license and could. Like most Alaskans who've been here a while, I've had all sorts of jobs from menial, at least in social stature, to very visible and powerful. I still sometimes regret leaving the best and easiest job I ever had as a union foreman of a custodial and maintenance crew long ago; great hours, great wages, regular schedule, I could cherry pick all the OT and premium pay, and I almost never had to work outside - can't ask for much more than that. But I suppose that stint in a menial job likewise somehow disqualifies me from higher positions, notwithstanding the fact that I was making more than most so-called professionals at the time. I also drove trucks for a while, also generally regarded as menial work, notwithstanding the fact that I was making more money than God at the time on the Pipeline; guess that really disqualifies me too in the eyes of NY elitists - none of whom could follow me around for a day even at my now somewhat advanced age. I'd love to take some of those people out to pull my crab pots on a nice January day. It ain't quite like The Deadliest Catch, but it is a Helluva ways from office work.

Oh, and the walrus penis is called an oosik and a goodly percentage of the homes throughout the State have one or more of them, including mine. They're actually a quite expensive form of Eskimo art. Anchorage's landmark, 5-Star Hotel Captain Cook, owned by former governor and US Interior Secretary, Walter Hickel, uses them for the beer pulls in their main floor bar. Watching the tourist ladies giggle over them is good entertainment.

Anyway, the Lower 48 has made it clear what it thinks of Alaska and Alaska resources. We're rolling in money right now and are about to convene a special session to put some of that money directly into our economy to offset energy prices. One of the things on the agenda is taking some of our 12.5% of North Slope oil production in kind for domestic use in the State, which means of course, that the Lower 48 can't have that oil. It also means that we can sell it to the refineries at whatever price we set and peg fuel prices based on that. Anchorage Int'l. is already one of the largest air cargo ports in the World and it will get a lot larger with a good fuel price advantage - those will be planes that aren't contributing to your airports. I don't think we can price fuel so that we can return to the good old days of $0.29.9, but we can sure price it a lot lower than the $5-6 you're paying.

We did our bit last time and threw oil on the market in the '80s to help break the OPEC price. We understand how much you all appreciate that. Won't happen again!

I have chosen to stay away from the presidential debate. I fully intend to vote for McCain, but any discussion I become involved in will only bring back my problems with him. So, I have chosen to look at our Congressional situation. That is how I intend to be involved.

Now, as far as your assertion that "Don Young has not been charged with ANYTHING", I never said he was charged with anything. Did you even read my post? My post was specific to his pork barrel ways. That was the only subject I addressed. Is there a reason why you wanted to change the subject of my post?

You addressed, "Ketchikan Bridge" and how you were not going to defend it. That is fine, and I can see why it gets tiresome.

However, let me ask you a direct question. I ask that you specifically address this subject. Do you feel that members of Congress who are the worst offenders of "Pork Barrel Spending and Earmarks" should be confronted for their irresponsible waste of taxpayer money? This includes John Murtha. Are you willing to defend John Murtha's earmarks and pork? I am not. I think he is corrupt for it.

However, and here is the catch, and I ask you not to dodge this point. Have you ever heard the phrase, "remove the plank from your own eye before you try to remove the speck from my eye"? In other words, how can we criticize Democrat pork spending if we are not willing to clean up our own house?

I would like to know why Don Young should be given a free pass with this issue?

barring earmarks. I would gladly support House and Senate rules banning earmarks. That said, the Republicans taking such a stance will be right in there with wetting your pants while wearing a dark suit; it'll give you a warm feeling, but nobody will notice. Such a stance is only meaningful and productive if we are in the majority, which we aren't likely to be for a long time. Imposing such a ban on ourselves while leaving the Ds free rein just elects more Ds who can "bring home the bacon" when a Republican won't. People like pork!
As long as it's their pork anyway.

Either give none of them a "free pass" or give none of them a free pass. My state has simply been singled out because of our small population, remote location, and lifestyle that pencil necked geeks and office working squishes on the East Coast don't understand or approve of. I'd be happy to refuse federal funds to the State so long as I could refuse the federal programs that went with them and so long as the other states did. BTW, we'd be one Helluva lot better off than most states. We'd especially be better off if we could deal in our own way with the huge, relatively, dependent class that exists here because of federal social services programs and federal Indian programs, to which we have to contribute vast sums as well.

There was a reason the Confederate States put a plain language ban of federal (Provisional Government) spending for "internal improvements to the States" in their Constitution. Worked out real well for them, didn't it?

AChance: As You Can See... by Wubbies World

I have a post up on Jerry Lewis today too. I intend to give none of them a free pass. I will be posting on others as well. I will also repeat coverage on Don Young as well as the others too. I am not concerned about Alaska or any other state. I am concerned with why Republicans in Congress have p**ped all over the Republican brand and put us in this bad electoral situation.

I genuinely believe that Republicans on Appropriations and those of similar kinsman ship are perfect examples of what is wrong. It needs to be fixed.

Unless and until the Republicans can run and get elected to a majority on a no earmarks, no pork platform or something like the Contract barring same, all of this is a meaningless gesture except for its self destructive effect on Republican officeholders who can't "bring home the bacon."

In Vino Veritas

I do not believe that it is pointless nor is it in itself destructive.

I am not a McCain fan, but I fully understand the necessity to support him and help him, including financially. If he does not win, the consequences will be disastrous to our nation. He will have my unwavering support for that reason. I also believe he will be good on judges.

Even with that being said, Sen. McCain will be drawing a far larger portion of his support from moderates and independent voters. Those voters will have a higher likelihood of supporting candidates on the Democrat side of the ballot, at least from a percentage basis. The conservative base voters will vote for all Republicans on the ballot percentage wise too, but there is a higher than normal likelihood of them not showing up to vote this year. I do not say that from a nefarious perspective. I say that purely from a realistic perspective.

Right now, the Republican brand is damaged badly in the eyes of the American voters. There is a reason for that happening. Have you noticed what the Democrats have done in the last three special elections that we lost in normally secure Republican districts? They have run conservative candidates. What does that tell you?

This tells me conservatism works every time it is tried. The party is not the issue. As long as we have Republicans who are acting corrupt, or trying to be more liberal than the Democrats, we are going to lose.

We also have had a plethora of posts here about John Murtha and David Obey and there pork barrel earmarking.

Now I ask you, what is wrong with this picture? I will tell you. We have Republicans who are worst pork barrel spenders and are very corrupt. Now either we can say it is okay, and grow silent about John Murtha, or we can do something about it. That include not keeping silent and giving tacit approval of what they are doing.

You may opt for silence and "tacit approval in the eyes of the voter", but I think that will only provide more reason for them to not want to vote for Republicans. The voter needs to know we are going to clean this up now, and not promise it after the election. They have heard enough promises and they do not believe them anymore. Remember how we didn't believe the promises about securing the border during the immigration debate? They still don't believe promises anymore. They are done waiting.

We act now or we die even worse in November. You choose your path of action. I have chosen mine. I am working on cleaning it up now, not later.

No More Promises To Take Care of It Later - Voters Don't Believe US Anymore!

(my emphasis)

I would go crazy in love to support such a measure!!!!!

leges sine moribus vanae

Young is not a fiscal conservative. But I wonder if a fiscal conservative could actually make it in Alaska? Being the only one from the state in the HOR, you have to keep bringing bacon home to stay popular. Lets face it, most constituents hate spending unless it's in their district.

My issue with him is in the federal investigations. There is some bad connections with him and shady dealings that have gone down. His dealings with VECO and in earmarking Coconut Road don't bode well for his image (or that of the party).

Call it self destructive to call guys like this out, but I agree with doing so. There have been recent reports that Republicans may lose another 20 seats in the House this November. Corruption was a huge issue with voters in 2006. Time to clean house and separate these guys from the party. If people don't start doing it, enjoy the mega-majority the Democrats will build.

to call people out, per se. I said it was self-destructive for Republicans to commit to a no pork, no earmarks agenda while in the minority; you just leave the Ds free to pork to their hearts' content and saddle us with candidates and officeholders who can't/won't "deliver" for their districts. That is simply suicidal. If we can run on such a platform, and get elected to a majority on it, then we know that we have the will of the People behind us. Right now, it appears that the will of the People is to have pork - as long as it isn't in Alaska.

The salient fact of Alaska political life is that we have to get along with our avaricious, left-wing friends in Seattle and San Francisco. The shipping and fishing industries have never taken well to having lost Alaska as their private playground upon Statehood. Those manly men on "The Deadliest Catch" aren't from Alaska, though there are lots of Alaskans in the fishery, they're from Seattle. The Jones Act makes the World safe for monopoly, unionized shippers to control everything that moves in or out of Alaska (and Hawaii), and makes it travel on a grossly uncompetitive American bottom. Back in the Day, all the SEA and SFO magnates had to do was buy or bribe some federal bureaucrat and they had a dispensation to rape Alaska (and Hawaii) at will. They still try, and often succeed, but at least we have some recourse these days. That said, we often have to help them get what they want or they use their power to do stuff to us. Any Alaska Congresscritter is going to have to do a certain amount of "go along, get along" with the Left Coast, which ain't exactly conductive to being a FisCon. As I've pointed out before, all the Hell-raising about the Knik Arm Bridge didn't have a damned thing to do with the money; it was about the fact that it would make Anchorage a very competitive container port to the Left Coast Democrat/union/mafia ports. Can't have that, can we?
