Rudy is our best shot against Clinton...

I am surprised that there has been so little analysis as to the relative strengths and weaknesses of our GOP bench against the Clintons.

Here is a great analysis by the always perspicacious Michael Barone:

In it, Rudy does the best of any GOP candidate against Clinton. While Newt Gingrich loses by 3, Rudy wins by 9 in today's Rasmussen national poll.

Rudy wins by 200 electoral votes, putting into play 12 more states than Bush did in 2004. We need to start looking at this strategically like the opposition does. Giuliani with some coattails could give us back a stronger GOP delegation in the Congress- and Rudy won't accept the defeaticrat wing to set our foreign and domestic policy!!

The great thing about Rudy . . . by Mason Conservative

Is that his social positions may be to the left of many in the GOP, but he has never gone out of his way to anger or spit in the fact of the base the way John McCain has. Rudy has even cultivated conservative stalwarts like Sean Hannity. By using his personality to win over endosrements on a personal level, Rudy has made it much easier for conservatives to accept him. I found it interesting that Dobson said he would never support McCain, despite the fact that on many social issues McCain is more in-tune with Dobson as opposed to McCain.

Rudy is the only cadidate in the entire feiled that can walk into every single Congressional district from Massachusettes to Alaska.

The good will he has generated as America's Mayor, however, is not absolute. Guiliani will need to make concrete promises on many issues to placate conservatives without being accused of flip-flopping, that could so damage him. Things like promising judges of the Alito/Roberts type will help. Certainly Republicans will understand that a Guiliani Presidency will move the administration slightly to the left of the current one. However, his popularity could also help us reclaim Congress, moving it to the right.

I personally have yet to decide where to go on this race, but I could vote for Rudy without a thought.

Kerry by FirstState

John Kerry was supposed to be the most electable, too.

First State Politics

Lieberman was the most electable. The idea that Kerry was the most electable was only in comparison to Dean. Or more accurately, Ds thought b/c Kerry was a veteran he would be the most electable. They did not look at polls or think about being a MA liberal.

Guiliani and McCain in polls do much better than other candidates. People think they are electable based on favorable ratings and polls. They do not think they are electable b/c of their personal story.

I wouldn't put much trust in polls so early. All that most people know about Mayor Giuliani, at this early date, is that he took charge in New York on 9/11, and was a very successful mayor. Both outstanding acheivements, but far from the only relevant information. I think the question of who on the Republican side could beat the Democratic condidate won't be clear for many months.
