The Impotence of Hope; In Massachusetts The Future Is Now

Can McCain Win Massachusetts? Recent polls have shown the race between McCain and Obama surprisingly close in the Bay State. At first, I assumed that the Survey USA polls were woefully inaccurate. However, Rasmussen confirms that the race is close. Even if these polls are off five to ten points, Obama should be crushing McCain. If this race occurred in 2006, Obama would win by thirty plus.
So what gives? Well, in Massachusetts, the future is now. In 2006, a young, inexperienced, charismatic, charming, African-American “progressive” ran for Governor of Masssachusetts. He said all the right things. The media adored him. He was affable and generous. He carried himself with poise and a pleasant demeanor. He was a radical liberal, but his words of tolerance and inclusion made everybody feel warm and fuzzy inside. Everybody thought he was a nice guy, a historic figure. He made liberals cry and women swoon.
He is Governor Deval Patrick and in fifteen short months his administration has proven to be a colossal flop. Even the NYT is ready to concede that the much hyped Patrick administration has been completely inept in a new story published this morning. All the sweet talk and promises have proven empty.
The criticism levied against Patrick in 2006 was that he was all empty rhetoric. “Just words”, his opponent, Kerry Healey, charged. He responded with this:

If this speech seems familiar, it is because Obama stole it. Clinton's attacks on Obama's plagiarism are true. Obama has stolen much from Deval including his campaign theme. In Obama, we see the Deval candidacy. In Deval, we see a future Obama Presidency and it's not pleasant.
Deval's campaign ended up being "just words". Deval is a fading star. The luster is gone. He is another clueless hopeless hack. He has been rendered impotent by his failure to deliver on any major promises, his lack of political skill, his own naïve liberal worldview, and the unrealistic expectations he created by his own soaring rhetoric. Up here, we are witnessing amateur hour.
I am infatuated with McCain’s numbers in MA. Is it possible that Deval's feverishly idealistic campaign and his failing administration have made many Bay Staters deaf to the sonorious tone and lofty platitudes of Obama? Did the Deval campaign make Obamamania empty and blase for those who believed in Deval in 2006?
Politicians use Boston based media markets to advertise in New Hampshire. McCain is going to make a play for New Hampshire. I imagine that Deval will continue to flounder and flop and that Obama will continue to remind Bay Staters of the vapid rhetoric of 20006. Meanwhile, Boston based media outlets will be saturated with McCain advertisements. Is the unthinkale possible? Can Massachusetts go Red? Well, a Massachusetts conservative can dream.
In Massachusetts, Obama’s future is now and it’s an abject failure.
Obama = Deval = Dukakis = Failure.

Governors in Mich, NY and now Mass in trouble? Are there any honest Democratic Governors. (bad joke, I know)
She seems like a nice lady but I just don't know. I'm sure one doesn't become a governor without being a real party player.
Well, she made headlines by blocking the construction of a power plant in Kansas because of concerns about "climate change". She's had a few vetos on conceal and carry overridden too. She's a big time lib, but the state legislature in Kansas is heavily Republican, so the damage has been limited.
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
as there would seem to be a natural limit to how liberal a governor can be in that state.
No, Bredesen is actually pretty conservative. Perhaps more conservative then a lot of the Republicans in the legislature. Cato gave him a very high rating for fiscal conservatism, and their ratings usually aren't shallow, but pretty well thought out.
"I ain't never votin' fo another Democrat so long as I can draw breath! I'll vote for a dog first!" - Leola Thomas
for pulling the plug on TN's version of HillaryCare, which had become an expensive fiasco.
"No compromise with the main purpose, no peace till victory, no pact with unrepentant wrong." - Winston Churchill
I've seen those polls, and they're intriguing, but still find it hard to believe that McCain will come within 10 pts of winning the People's Republic of Mass. But hell, if this election season has taught us anything, it's that conventional wisdom is out the window. I guess anything can happen.
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
is (I believe) beating McCain by only 8pts.
for reference, he was beating the Mac in Ohio by 10 as of january...now hes behind him there by an avg of 7 pts.
Since 1980 (?) no R candidate has won the nomination without:
Iowa or New Hampshire
and
South Carolina.
Senator McCain picked up NH and SC...so at least one nugget of conventional wisdom has held true.
[That, and don't trust the Clintons. ;)]
Fighting for conservatism one day at a time.

I still think we need to go after the Hillary people this November. Give them a choice McCain or Nader. Go to Votenader.org
...that if this election were on a level playing field, without the natural advantages Dems have right now, the GOP would be walking into a 50 state landslide victory.

I've got two quotes:
"You're a black guy in Boston. You don't need my help to be completely f*&%ed." - Matt Damon in "The Departed"
"Nobody called me n!@@#r until I got to Boston." - Clarance Thomas
For all their sanctimony, it appears that they have a lot bigger of a race problem then Republicans do.
"I ain't never votin' fo another Democrat so long as I can draw breath! I'll vote for a dog first!" - Leola Thomas
Shhh. Nobody can say it, but the union Democrat Boston Irish are, as we say up here, "wicked racist".
Yep. I'm well aware.
Which is exactly why Obama is doing so poorly.
"I ain't never votin' fo another Democrat so long as I can draw breath! I'll vote for a dog first!" - Leola Thomas
But Deval beat Reilly in landslide. Obama is foing poorly because Massachusetts just went through an election with all the same hype, hope and drama. They are burnt. They know Obama's rhetoric is alll B.S.
We can certainly hope. In my delusion of delusions, a McCain victory here might also give some help to Ognowski in his bid against John Kerry.
Could we actually have MA go red and have a Republican senator?

A majority of the news that is occurring in MA now, shows how inept a state govt. 95% made up of Dems really is. Patrick has done absolutely nothing except pass bond bills protecting environmental habitats and raise tolls on our highways. He got shot down with his casino proposal, which I'm happy about cause he was going to give the jobs only to the unions, which make up only 12% of our workers in MA, and he hired some professor from my alma mater to conduct a study on what the "great" and overstated fiscal effects would be from them. I'm gonna call Howie Carr and get my "Don't blame me I voted for Muffy" bumper sticker
Before you get to heaven, you must go through hell, which in my case is the People's Republic of Massachusetts.
....the GOP has done surprisingly well in electing governors. I believe the GOP held the governor's office for 16 years before Patrick took over.

A Rare Quality Article From the NYT
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/27/us/politics/27patrick.html?_r=1&oref=s...
"Mr. Patrick, who easily won office in 2006 after dazzling voters with a message of hope and change, suffered a nasty defeat last week at the hands of the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, which quashed his proposal to increase revenues by allowing three resort casinos in the state. None of the governor’s major policy proposals have cleared the Legislature, in fact, and he and Salvatore DiMasi, the speaker of the House, have taken to trading barbs publicly.
Mr. Patrick is faring better than a year ago, when he was under siege for spending more than $10,000 on drapes for his State House office and upgrading his state car from a Ford Crown Victoria to a Cadillac. (He later agreed to reimburse the state for the drapes and part of the car lease.) By his third month in office, Mr. Patrick had announced that his wife was being treated for depression, and by his fourth, he had overhauled his staff.
But even now, governing is not coming easily for Mr. Patrick, 51, a former civil rights lawyer and corporate executive who came to Massachusetts on a prep school scholarship in the ’70s."
New England puritanism, it's amazing how much things have changed the last four hundred years. Isn't it ironic that 2020 is an election year, the same year Pilgrims arrived here four hundred years ago?
I'm just wondering when exactly did MA go liberal? Pilgrims and Puritans must be rolling over in their graves knowing that their beloved colonies are now the very center of wickedness and lewdiness. Sad, isn't it?

But in my recent projection, Obama is BARELY hanging onto Kennedyland.
The state that went to Kerry by a nearly DC margin is THIS CLOSE seven months before the election?
Now I can put something behind this trend. I knew something was going on up there, and the jump from Deval to Obama isn't hard to fathom.
I would be shocked if Obama carried it by more than 4 pts come the fourth of November...
