Republicans' Black Sheep -- Chuck Hagel

Chuck Hagel has always been an odd Republican – a rather blue one you might say. And right now, he’s not willing to endorse the presumed Republican nominee for president, John McCain. McCain is the only option for the right in 2008, and his policies and ideas are vastly different from those of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Hagel disagrees with John McCain’s approach to Iraq and seems to bank on that reason for his lack of support. This morning on CNN, Hagel told John Roberts he was “not ready to endorse him for president.”
Recently, HUMAN EVENTS reporter John Gizzi ran into Hagel at the airport and confronted him about the issue. Gizzi wrote:
I asked the senator whether that meant he had not yet endorsed McCain for President.
'You heard right,' Hagel replied, 'John [McCain] and I have some serious disagreements on foreign policy.' When I asked if this meant their very public difference of opinion on Iraq, Hagel said: 'It’s not just Iraq. It’s about the direction of where U.S. foreign policy is going over the next few years.'
That a sitting Republican senator would refuse to say whether he backs his party’s certain nominee for President was a bit of a jolt -- especially since Hagel was one of a handful of GOP senators to support McCain over George W. Bush for the GOP nomination in 2000.
Hagel refuses to acknowledge the real progress in Iraq or that the country is a central front in the War on Terror. In fact, last year, he was one of only two Republican Senators to vote for troop withdrawal.
Last year, Robert Novak reported :
"...he described Iraq as 'coming undone,' with its regime 'weaker by the day.'
'...Iraq is not embroiled in a terrorist war today.'
Hagel, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, plans to retire to this year but his influence is still significant. Though he has a decent lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union, it's tough for Republicans to align themselves with someone so blind to vested American interests in Iraq. It's not just about the Iraqis, as he often muses, but about our national security and commitment as well.
Here he is this Sunday, speaking about the non-endorsement and his thoughts on Iraq:
Hagel’s new book is called “Moving Forward” but by refusing to support the Republican nominee for President or recognizing the terrorist threat for what it is, Hagel’s not moving anything forward for his party.
Lieberman is a doctrinaire Democrat on everything but the war. Hagel deviates from us more often than he doesn't. It's not even close.

Unless Obama wins and appoints him to something, Hagel is heading for K street. I won't be sorry to see him go.
That way Obama could claim to be different, etc, etc
Fortunately, he's on the way out and we will likely have a real conservative from Nebraska ... Mike Johanns.
bye bye Chuck and good riddense!

Chuck is increasingly irrelevant. He gambled on defeat in America and lost. Unlike McCain, who criticized the war because he actually wanted to win, Hagel obviously doesn't really.
I saw him speak a few months ago. Typical "blame America first" stuff, "arrogant" foreign policy, needing to make kissy faces in front of the EU to make the like us, etc.
It wasn't that I disagreed with him, although I did, but it was more that his thoughts were shallow and boring.

Hagel has always been the stupidest member of the GOP caucus and the most isolationist/pro-Arab.
Not a shock he will back Obama. He is a disgrace and the sooner he drops out of politics the better for all of us.
Obama is Jimmy Carter- only without the sweater.
I doubt he'll endorse Obama. He's pretty conservative other then on the war.
I expect in the end he'll either endorse McCain, or stay neutral.
One way or another, his endorsement means roughly as much as mine, that is - one vote in a state who's outcome isn't really in doubt.

Actually, his ACU number is 85.2 Not 40.

Far be it for me to say much positive about the guy, I can't stand him, but let's not like him for what he is, not what he isn't. He's terrible on foreign policy and pretty good on other stuff.

I stand corrected...I mixed him up with Spector of PA who is at 43

We've only got to worry about this traitor for another few months. This guy is just a Ron Paultard in sheep's clothing. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to run on a third party ticket to get the democrats in office.

complete disdain for him. But a traitor he's not. Words have meaning, please be careful.

I think he meant traitor to his party....which he is....not a traitor to his country which he is not.

"Traitor" and "treason" have VERY specific meanings and are overused and abused. This particular instance is abuse of the highest level.
John Kerry is arguably a traitor. Chuck Hagel is not. He is, however, arguably an idiot.

I don't know where to go with that...I want to say we have to agree to disagree but I agree he's an idiot....LOL
So where does that leave us?
LOL

I took a poll once to match my policy agreements with the people potentially running for President. I matched up 100% with Hagel's positions at the time. So it depresses me a lot to see him abandon John McCain in the middle of this battle for the Presidency, because I simply cannot imagine how he cannot have a clear choice in this race. Shame.

He is kind of like our Lieberman, and I really didn't like what the democrats did to Lieberman.
I don't think he is very blue, aside from being wrong on foreign policy.
