The Onion Jumps the Shark

It was bound to happen eventually. The infamous team of depressives over at The Onion (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of MoveOn.Org) has finally produced an offensive parody of the Pope that doesn't really shock anyone, considering the source, and doesn't even make the people who are supposed to get the joke laugh. This comes on the heels of their ONN piece on John McCain and the secret service, the title of which was revised because as originally written, it sounded like McCain was begging for an assassination attempt. For anyone who missed it, the title of that story has changed within the past 36 hours on their website, after what I can only guess was a little afterthought on the part of The Onion's editors. I guess they weren't intersted in a visit from the actual secret service after joking that the Senator was calling for his own assassination.

[Update: The original title of the piece now on The Onion's home page as "McCain Vows To Replace Secret Service With His Own Bare Fists" was: "McCain Declines Secret Service, Dares Assassins to Try Something"]

I'll leave it to the reader to guess which one better reflects the actual sentiments of The Onion's editorial board. I go with primacy, not recency.

And so they changed that title, but now as a follow up, they've got the Pope planning to destroy the United States:

Pope Returns To Vatican With Comprehensive Plan To Blow Up United States

Using recently uncovered information, shocked intelligence analysts have determined that the religious extremist's recent tour of the nation was in fact a reconnaissance mission designed to exploit essential weaknesses in our country's defenses and expose them to mass destruction.

Even by Onion standards, this piece is not just trite and insulting, it also misses the mark in terms of satire ... it's just lamely written. It's not even darkly, depressingly funny like the other anti-pope, anti-Christian stuff The Onion usually trades in. Heck, it's not even as creative as their "Bomb New York" ONN Report from a few months ago, which at least had the virtue of having a catchy soundtrack while it sneered at and smeared the only remaining socially-acceptable targets of bigotry in this country: patriotic people in America's heartland. [Update II: Kicking people in the flyover states is still a rich vein of material for The Onion's writers, as you can see from their latest piece on Kansas.]

I think that says a lot: because as the country lurches closer to a Barack Obama presidency, the Onion is losing its sense of humor. They're becoming a transparent and unfunny propaganda mouthpiece instead of a thinly-veiled satirical propaganda mouthpiece.

They must have been taking their meds this week in order to produce a piece that was meant to be scathingly mocking but comes across like such a wet fart. At least it's good to see them getting back to their anti-Christian, atheist Progressive Chicagoland roots now that Obama is the presumptive nominee.

Same with Jon Stewart and a lot of the left out there. They just got so wrapped up in mocking Bush that they stopped caring about reaching a wide audience.
