New Democrats Gas Election Political Move (Give Gas Away)

The Idaho Statesman reports that for more than an hour Tuesday motorists lined up at a Boise gas station to buy cheap fuel subsidized by 1st District Democratic congressional candidate Walt Minnick’s campaign. “Minnick...said he was bringing attention to high gas prices. His Republican rivals panned the event as a “publicity stunt,” the newspaper reports. For an hour, Minnick offered motorists gas for $2.26 per gallon, $1.33 less than the posted price. “I’m trying to get the attention of the media to let them know that Idahoans are extremely unhappy” about gas prices, Minnick said. Republican incumbent Rep. Bill Sali ’s spokesman Wayne Hoffman said, “Radical environmentalists like Walt Minnick are directly responsible for the environmental policies that have given us high gas prices.” Minnick’s plan for improving gas prices is to invest more in alternative energy like wind, solar, and biofuels that don’t drive up food prices.

and now............
The lure of cheap gas drew hundreds of people to Speedy Gonzalez EZ Stop on Friday, where congressional candidate Travis Childers fueled vehicles and asked for votes.
The Democratic candidate was joined by U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., for the "Fed Up When You Fuel Up Tour." As part of the event, which started Thursday in several other cities in the 1st Congressional District, the first 50 motorists got up to 10 gallons of gas for $1.25 a gallon. Regular prices were $3.59.
"The significance of that amount is that it was the average price of gas when Greg Davis was in the Legislature and voted to increase the state gas tax," Childers said while fueling the car of Verona resident Heather Lagrone.
Yes and it may work on Tuesday in Miss.
Considering the political tangibles I've received in the past - poorly-insulated potholders, straggly flowers - this seems like a lot memorable. And if the campaign wants to spend its campaign funds that way, who are we to say they can't.
Will it gain votes? That remains to be seen. But I've sure seen a lot of other campaign expenditure that are sure loser methods. And if the campaign is getting favorable press treatment - that's a plus in itself.
Innovation is the mother's milk of political campaigns. The correlary, of course, is that campaigns relying solely on mother's milk aren't going to grow beyond the baby stage.

Maybe there will be some Retarius vs Secutor action. PETA would probably object to any of the better classical matchups.
