By Pejman Yousefzadeh
So let me be the latest to link to this P.J. O'Rourke commencement-speech-you-will-never-actually-hear-given-at-a-college. It's utterly fantastic. I may not agree with all of it, but I agree with lots of it and find the following especially worth quoting:
Here we are living in the world's most prosperous country, surrounded by all the comforts, conveniences and security that money can provide. Yet no American political, intellectual or cultural leader ever says to young people, "Go out and make a bunch of money." Instead, they tell you that money can't buy happiness. Maybe, but money can rent it.
There's nothing the matter with honest moneymaking. Wealth is not a pizza, where if I have too many slices you have to eat the Domino's box. In a free society, with the rule of law and property rights, no one loses when someone else gets rich.
The man's got a point.

At least not if this story is to be believed. And yes, much of what is found in that story in terms of anti-Obama sentiments is ugly beyond measure. But that ugliness may not serve as much of a deterrent against Clinton staying in.

By Mark Kilmer
To some lonely Dems, their nightmare dream ticket won't die. Check out this site, where you can sign a petition (!).
I suppose the thought is that Hillary in the second slot would cause those who would vote for her to vote for Barry, but that's not going to happen. The rabid supporters of Hillary, those who say they'd sooner vote for John McCain than for Barry, are not going to change their minds because she's on the bottom of the ticket. They want her, for some cause, to be President.
And same is true for the Obama supporters if Hillary should win the nomination, and the site allows for that.
Folks, this is like looking into the cage of some bizarre creature in a zoo, maybe poking the poor thing with sticks.

This looks to be a good production from HBO. I haven't heard a lot about it, but from what I have heard they worked very hard to capture both sides fairly.
Nonetheless, I am very disappointed that they did not cast Frodo Baggins as Bob Shrum.

As long as those 6s aren't foreshocks of a bigger one, an 8 or a 9, I wouldn't worry. I was about 60 miles from where the Northridge quake was. It was a 6.7 and I don't remember if I even felt it. It certainly did no damage.
So here's hoping they get no bigger, and stay 100 miles away, safely.

By Ben Domenech
John Sununu takes on Jeanne Shaheen in this new interview at the newly launched Now! Hampshire:
“She supported the Bush tax cuts, now she’s against them. She supported our involvement in Iraq, and now she has changed her mind. She took a pledge back when she was governor not to impose a broadbased tax, and then she pushed and tried to give the state a sales tax that would have devastated our economy,” said Sununu. “You know, you’ve got to be honest and sincere and direct with voters about your position, about your values.”

This doesn't look good at all. As of 2pm ET, there have been two earthquakes above 6.0 and several 5.0+ quakes in the water off Tokyo, in the past 90 minutes. Tokyo has a history of horrible destruction from earthquakes. Hold your breath and say a prayer.

Apparently Obama is unfamiliar with the concept of "unconditional surrender." At least by our enemies, at any rate. Maybe his grade school in Indonesia didn't really give him a solid grounding in American history.

So today, former Presidential nominee George McGovern has asked Senator Clinton to quit the race, and endorsed Senator Obama as the Democratic nominee.
Nobody told him that Presidential losers aren't superdelegates, and that the superdelegates are supposed to prevent him from happening again, I guess.

Posted at 10:53am on May 7, 2008 The Examiner on the latest Huge Government Boondoggle
By Ben Domenech
Tim Kaine and the Washington Metro Transit Authority unite to screw over the taxpayers in this Examiner editorial:
Dulles Rail will not reduce traffic in Northern Virginia, as the project’s own environmental studies attest. It will actually increase congestion in and around Tysons, thanks to higher densities approved by the Fairfax Board of Supervisors in connection with the project. It’s no exaggeration to say Tysons Corner will suffer perpetual gridlock once the Dulles Rail and its parallel developments are completed. Every tax dollar spent on Dulles Rail is a tax dollar that should have been used to reduce congestion on the Washington region’s roads.
Half of the $200 million in “cost reductions” the FTA cited to make the Dulles Rail project qualify for federal funding are no more than removing — for now — planned improvements to Route 7, whose median will be used for the concrete elevated tracks. But Route 7 is already at a virtual standstill even without any new construction or added density. These essential road improvements will be tacked on later when the project is past the point of no return, and they will be more expensive for the Fairfax County taxpayers now conveniently on the hook for the inevitable cost overruns. Indeed, the longer the project drags on, the higher the ultimate cost of completion will be, and it will be borne mostly by local taxpayers and commuters.

By Martin A. Knight
The silver lining around this cloud is that our people in Congress have been made aware of the seriousness of our situation now - six months out - instead of a few weeks before Election Day as it happened in 2006.
Thankfully, this time the Turn Out! Turn Out!! Turn Out!!!™ delusion that masked the approaching disaster then is dead and buried.
... in a closed-door session at the Capitol, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told members that the NRCC doesn’t have enough cash to "save them" in November if they don’t raise enough money or run strong campaigns themselves.
Posted at 9:07am on May 7, 2008 The NYT Hates John McCain
By Ericka Andersen
In a display of typical anti-Republican mouth vomit, the New York Times today criticized John McCain for his focus on maintaining a conservative, constitutionalist Supreme Court should he become President. McCain has long hailed Justices Roberts and Alito and continued to do so in his recent speech on judicial nominees.
The NYT editorial starts tricks the reader into thinking they might actually be saying something positive about McCain when they write, "So we are thankful to Senator John McCain for reminding us Tuesday what this year’s presidential race really is about….” But it quickly turns sour.
They continue:
“On a day when Mr. Obama won a decisive victory in North Carolina and Mrs. Clinton eked out a win in Indiana, Mr. McCain spoke about his judicial philosophy. He is determined to move a far too conservative and far too activist Supreme Court and federal judiciary even further and more actively to the right.”
As for more of Roberts and Alito, the Times said, “That is just what the country does not need.”
The country’s most well-known newspaper is gunning for the Democrats despite their forced, half-hearted endorsement of McCain when Republicans were still in limbo for a nominee.
It’s no surprise coming from this liberal hack job – which consistently buries important stories on page 17 and exposes national security secrets on the front page – but it seems their editorials retain absolutely no balance — ever. I am sick of it and so is at least half the country.
The Times twisted their editorial to explain that McCain’s ability to stand outside of a cat fight for the nomination has shown “what is truly at stake in this election and why the country cannot, for example, afford another president committed to packing the courts with activist, right wing judges.”
They stake the tired claim that McCain is too much like President Bush. The editorial ends with this:
“Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama can continue to tear each other up and fight over each superdelegate, or they can debate the issues — for the sake of the voters.”
…Because God forbid John McCain become President and keep our country safe and protect sovereignty as a people. The NYT is right that Clinton and Obama are extremely similar on most policies. They will both leave us prone to attack and prisoner to a growing government.

Whichever it was is known only to the immediate participants, although the Indiana Attorney General's office will no doubt assuage their curiosity as well; either way, Hillary wins Indiana after all.

By Jeff Emanuel
Ambinder concludes:
The basic demographic breakdowns suggest that the black/white split has widened as well (although I can't say too much about that now), which might mean that racial polarization (along with SES polarization) is driving the Democratic race to an unprecedented degree.
Um, yeah. Yeah, I'd say that when you have whites voting for your white candidate by a 2-to-1 margin, and blacks voting for your black candidate at a 9-to-1 margin, you do indeed have just a bit of a "racial polarization"/identity politics issue going on among your base of voters.
Just a bit of a problem with race in the Democratic Party. Race, race, race, Democrat, Democrat, Democrat...am I taunting a bit too much?
Ah, identity politics...as Rev. Wright might say, the chickens are a-comin' home to roost.
