Duncan Hunter endorses Huckabee (comments)
___________________________________________________________
Disclaimer: I am a member of a state-wide executive committee that is affiliated with Governor Mike Huckabee's campaign for the GOP presidential nomination
He has always been a big protectionist and populist so this isn't unexpected.
suddenly endorsed Huckabee or Reagan rose from the grave to do so, most here at RS would shout them down as turncoats and losers.
Rush has been pretty vocal about his utter -lack- of support for Huck. So if he were to "suddenly endorse" Huck, yeah... there'd be problems of all sorts.
Fred Thompson, 2008
The simple truth is that talk radio has fed us a badly distorted version of reality when it comes to Huckabee. Maybe it's the business relationship with Bain, maybe they let Club for Growth form their opinion. You owe it to your country to see for yourself. Check out his website, check other sources too, but don't take the word of the voice on the radio. Decide for yourself.
What would Duncan do?
You do many of us a disservice by suggesting that we have NOT done our research and, instead, formed our opinions based on talk radio.
I must confess I have not been to his web site. But when I was researching Fred, his site was the last place I went. I wanted third party information.
I did the same with all of the candidates. I bet most othere here, did as well.
most of us here have sifted through to come up with our positions on the candidates. We are not naive enough to just take one pundit's opinion, no matter how much we might trust that person. We have decided for ourselves--and many of us don't like Huckabee's postions on a wide variety of subjects. As to what would Duncan do? Obviously he'd sell out to whoever offered him something.
it was brought up he might run. I liked the fact that like me he had lost over 100lbs and was a preacher.
Then I googled his name and read many, many, many articles about his ethical issues in Arkansas. That's really not a good combo. We've had enough preachers with questionable ethics.
Not to mention, he is a populist. I think Huckabee missed the part about separation between church and state.
The church has it's role to feed the hungry, orphans, widows and to care for those that cannot care for themselves. Unfortunately instead of trying to fix the problems within the church, they've become the problems of the government. That needs to be corrected and Huckabee isn't the man to do that.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"
Can you explain how Mike Huckabee is trying to make a law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise of another?
Thomas Jefferson made the comment "thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." in this letter to the Danbury Baptists.
Its more than talk radio. The smartest people I know periodically reexamine everything they know. They break everything down to the basics and rebuild their belief systems accordingly. Now, that doesn't mean that they turn into John Kerry and switch opinions on everything, but they come to realize that sometimes they put their emphasis on the wrong attributes. Ie focusing on the money, rather than one what good the money can do.
Even when people do realize they are wrong, they get so emotionally attached to their wrong opinion that they can't let go with crushing their ego. It takes a real man to admit they made a mistake.
The truth can only be found by those who seek it.
Thats why I won't vote for Huck or McCain. Populism does not = conservatism.

I'm really disappointed in Duncan Hunter's choice. I've known Hunter for around 25 years and always thought he was solid. I even respected his run for the President as an interesting Swan Song and, hopefully, keep the other candidates accountable. Hunter behind Huckabee? It doesn't add up. I talk about the insanity of the Thompson factor here:

Tariff tax policy is diagnostic. Those who wish to control international trade have been bitten by the big government bug, but just hide it by doing it in a patriotic-sounding way.
Tariffs were there to raise revenue. And yeah, it was controversial even then that Alexander Hamilton wanted to set industrial policy by applying protectionist tariffs.
The 16th Amendment was one of the worst things to happen to us. As for tariffs, I'm not saying that they aren't controversial or even that they are a good idea. I'm just saying that they are directly constitutional and I can't see how they are an issue related to one's conservatism as such.
It's industrial policy through taxation that is suspect.
