Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) called for a moment of Personal Privilege to defend himself against charges made in the press by a member of majority leader Steny Hoyer's staff. The staffer told the Politico that Diaz-Balart deliberately interrupted a memorial service for deceased Rep. Tom Lantos by offering a procedural motion on the contempt of Congress resoultion, forcing a vote during the memorial. Diaz-Balart noted that the majority convened the House almost one hour before the memorial ended in violation of an understanding between the parties.
Hoyer rose during the Personal Privilege debate and essentially apologized, saying he "regretted" what had happened and understood Diaz-Balart's position as well as the arguments of Reps. Drier and Blunt who rose to defend him.
