Immigration

Posted at 8:46pm on May 15, 2008 And Now a Word for Folks Who Use the Word "McAmnesty" On a Regular Basis.

By Leon H Wolf

You know the guy who's likely to win the Democratic Presidential Nomination? He's planning some action on immigration if he wins the election. You know what he's planning to do? If you guessed "build a really big wall and deport lots of people," you're so, so very close to being correct:

Barack Obama is easily winning the African American vote, but to woo Latinos, where he is running 3-to-1 behind rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he is taking a giant risk: spotlighting his support for the red-hot issue of granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

It's a huge issue for Latinos, who want them. It's also a huge issue for the general electorate, which most vehemently does not. Obama's stand could come back to haunt him not only in a general election, but with other voters in states such as California, where driver's licenses for illegal immigrants helped undo former Gov. Gray Davis.

* * *

"Barack Obama has not backed down" on driver's licenses for undocumented people, said Federico Peña, a former Clinton administration Cabinet member and Denver mayor now supporting Obama. "I think when the Latino community hears Barack's position on such an important and controversial issue, they'll understand that his heart and his intellect is with Latino community."

You know, I understand that McCain is not acceptable to you on this issue. I get that. But the decision to not vote does not occur in a vacuum - if McCain does not win, someone else will. And he's got plans you're probably not going to like.

Posted at 7:24pm on May 15, 2008 SENATE TRIES TO SNEAK IMMIGRATION REFORMS THROUGH

By RS Insider

image

It looks like the Democrats and amnesty-loving Republicans slipped the AG Jobs bill into the Senate emergency supplemental appropriations bill during committee markup today. This bill relates to giving amnesty to illegal aliens who work as migrant workers.

Early intelligence reports that it probably has provisions similar to the last AG Jobs bill that was considered – including amnesty provisions. It was supposedly a Feinstein/ Craig amendment and was accepted with a vote of 17 – 12.

If Harry Reid offers this version of the supplemental as a substitute to the House version, he will block out all other senators from any opportunity to strip this Ag Jobs provision, which will ultimately keep potential amnesty provisions in the war funding bill.

Your Senator's number is (202) 224-3121.

[UPDATE:] A source tells me that the GOP leadership is scrambling to stop this and that this was not done with the GOP leadership's blessing. The House GOP leadership is preparing to fight too.

Posted at 1:23am on May 14, 2008 Border Fence Ruins Mother's Day for Mexican Families

By Warner Todd Huston

If you are looking for an eyerolling, maudlin Mother's Day story, you don't have to go any farther than the pages of the Washington Post to get a doosie. You see, Ashley Surdin of the WaPo gave us a tear-jerker of a tale about how the border fence between Mexico and the United States keeps Mothers from being with their children. Yes those mean Americans and their insistence on border security hurts Mommies. To that all I can say is, Oh brother!

Posted at 12:33pm on May 13, 2008 Hazleton, PA Needs a Straight Talk Whistle Stop

By Uma Richie

Closing his April 15 economy speech, John McCain said:

“As I have always done, I will make my case to every American who will listen. I will not confine myself to the comfort of speaking only to those who agree with me. I will make my case to all the people. I will listen to those who disagree. I will try to persuade them. I will debate. And I will learn from them.”

If McCain is sincere, he should take the Straight Talk Express to Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

Hazleton, a small city whose fortunes rose and fell with the anthracite coal industry, is the kind of place the Barak Obama displayed disdain for and ignorance of in his Bittergate comments. Over the past few years Hazleton has gained national attention in the illegal immigration debate. The town is appealing its loss to the ACLU in lawsuits regarding municipal enforcement of federal anti-illegal immigration legislation. Local opinion would probably position against McCain’s amnesty plan.

During the April primary election campaign Hazleton’s mayor Republican Lou Barletta, who is challenging 12-term House incumbent Paul Kanjorski (PA-11), invited Senators Clinton, McCain, and Obama to visit. As the Hazleton Standard Speaker laments, none accepted.

Incidentally, the paper endorsed Senator Rick Santorum in his unsuccessful 2006 reelection bid against Bob Casey, Jr. for the simple reason that Santorum was the only candidate who had the guts to set foot in the town. (I am sorry, this editorial is no longer available on line.)

Hazleton is in many ways representative of small town America. Its difficulties are complex and can’t be smoothed over with a drive-by speech in front of a limping factory. It is tired of being ignored in favor of big city politics only to be hauled into court when it tries to solve its own problems within the context of the law.

All in all, a whistle stop in Hazleton would show that John McCain is a leader who cares about fly-over country, who is willing to listen to both sides of a debate, and who has the courage to venture into uncertain territory.

Posted at 8:20pm on May 8, 2008 A Tale Of Two Countries

By TXPoet

Once upon a time, there was this big country we will call it X-land. In this country there were several ethnic groups and the rulers of X-land lived in a far away land. The country was united through a common language and religion.

The rulers decided to let a few people from another country immigrate. X-land needed immigrants so that the land could be used and few of the indigenous people of X-land had any desire to, but these immigrants brought with them a new language and new religions. The new immigrants then brought their family and friends into X-land. They were able to do this because there was no border security. Because the leaders of X-land were so distant they were slow to react.

Posted at 10:11am on May 7, 2008 Part III: Draft Immigration Reform Points

By TXPoet

I was taught that in a discussion of a problem a person should follow up with suggestions for solving that problem. In the last two parts of this series [Part I: The Silent Majority Wants Immigration Reform and Part II: Let's Formulate A Plan (For Immigration Reform)] we discussed the problem and I requested suggestions for some solutions. I now submit for your review and comments a draft plan of points I believe should be included in immigration reform. They are not all inclusive. I attempted to cover the main problem areas that I am aware of in the current law. To reduce the amount of reading I thought about just publishing them over the span of a couple of articles but they are all connected. Then I contemplated giving my rationale of each point but even my eyes started glazing over when that article got too wieldy. So I decided to offer what I have drafted and then in later articles to perhaps discuss the rationale behind them.

Posted at 5:44am on May 7, 2008 San Fran Chronicle Spreads False Immigration Raids Story

By Warner Todd Huston

-By Warner Todd Huston

The San Francisco Chronicle and the various demagogue politicians of Berkeley and Oakland, California should really be ashamed of themselves for ginning up into sensational "raids" a few arrests by ICE agents and making of them actions designed to empty those community's schools of children. In reality a few routine U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in those cities occurred yesterday that had nothing to do with school children. Yet, these politicians shamelessly ran about the countryside waving their arms, serving grave warnings to ICE about their supposed targeting of school children, and ginning up parents with the false bravado of standing athwart ICE's "harassment and fear." But, with all the running about like Chicken Little claiming the ICE is falling, no raids either occurred or were even planned. To top it off, the San Francisco Chronicle reports the incident as the "fear across the communities" being "real" instead of correctly noting that these pandering pols in office made much ado about nothing just to inflate their own importance.

Posted at 9:40am on May 6, 2008 McCain To Speak At La Raza Conference

By ICRJCalvin

Republican candidate for President, John McCain, will speak at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza (“The Race”). La Raza is known as a Hispanic, open-borders, anti-immigration enforcement, advocacy and lobbying group. The La Raza Annual Convention will be held in San Diego on July 14, 2008.

What does John McCain have in common with La Raza which hates conservatives for defeating the illegal immigrant amnesty bill? La Raza portrays critics of illegal immigration and open-borders as racist. Yet, it is an ethnic separatist group and they call themselves “The Race.” What is wrong with this picture?

Posted at 9:12am on May 6, 2008 The High-Pass Filter In The Texas Jailhouse

By Repair Man Jack

The US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Bureau seeks to identify Criminal Aliens for a very simple reason. They want to catch these malefactors and return them to their various and sundry spawning holes. Their portion of the DHS website describes their goals in the following flowery prose.

The Criminal Alien Program (CAP) focuses on identifying criminal aliens who are incarcerated within federal, state and local facilities thereby ensuring that they are not released into the community by securing a final order of removal prior to the termination of their sentence.

This doesn’t register in most US states. There are some illegal immigrants everywhere, but in most states, the problem remains on the B-List of most of the citizenry. Things are different in close proximity to the Southern US border.

In Travis County, Texas, the ICE has egregiously worked to execute their mandate. The situation has led to utter controversy. This controversy points to an ongoing problem at DHS. People disrespect them when they shirk their duties, but DHS makes real enemies when it does its assigned tasks.

Posted at 1:23pm on May 5, 2008 Let's Formulate A Plan (For Immigration Reform)

By TXPoet

The method for computing the number of illegal aliens in the US is flawed. Please review this paper by Bear-Stearns from January 2005 concerning a more accurate picture of the actual numbers and problems involved.

For those not old enough to remember what the US was like prior to the changes brought about by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, I offer these quotes from a supporter of that Democratic sponsored Bill that got us into this mess, Sen. Edward “Ted” Kennedy.

Posted at 5:02pm on May 4, 2008 The Silent Majority Wants Immigration Reform

By TXPoet

Immigration is one of the many hot button issues of the ongoing Presidential Campaign. It has been the subject of many polls over the last few years.

What most voters, especially the younger ones don’t realize what the true future impact of immigration is. Today you can’t go into a store without seeing dual language signs because as the Pew Hispanic Center poll in 2006 showed a large percentage of both foreign-born and American-born Latinos do not believe they have to learn English to be a part of American Society. That's one reason you have to "Press One for English."

My Congressman, Rep. John Shadegg, normally a crusader for my conservative values, just said he supports amnesty for illegals:

On the eve of a key vote on a temporary-worker program for Arizona, the proposal has won the endorsement of a friend in a high place: U.S. Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz.

By patriotroom

From The Washington Post.

Hispanics, the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority group, now account for about one in four children younger than 5 in the United States, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released today.

This is an increase from 20% in 2000, an increase of 5% in only 8 years. In the Southwest the numbers are even more dramatic.

Posted at 1:16pm on May 1, 2008 Happy Rights For Illegal Aliens Day

By California Yankee

As you are sure to recall, two years ago, hundreds of thousands marched in support of rights for illegal aliens in coordinated events across the U.S.

Today, as they plan to march again, the rights for illegal aliens movement appears to have lost its enthusiasm:

Now, as they prepare for another round of May Day demonstrations in support of more liberal laws, some Austin organizers say fear and fatigue have sapped some of the marches' vigor.

"When year after year you fight and you fight without any kind of real attention and concern by our legislators, it's only logical that people might wear themselves out and maybe get discouraged from coming out again," said Luissana Santibañez of Familias Unidas por la Esperanza (Families United for Hope).

"The enthusiasm has diminished," said Josefina Castillo of the American Friends Service Committee.

[. . .]

Declining participation in the marches may also be due to a feeling among immigrants that the demonstrations haven't accomplished much and that they are powerless to make a difference, organizer Antolin Aguirre said.

Posted at 11:01am on Apr. 26, 2008 An Example of AP's Bias in Favor of Illegal Immigration

By Warner Todd Huston

-By Warner Todd Huston

The issue of illegal immigration has seemed to drift from the front pages of the news, of late, but the AP is not finished trying to advocate for law breakers everywhere, it seems. On April 25, the Associated Press posted a story that serves as a perfect example of how the wire service aims their reporting to support illegal immigration in the United States. In "Arizona sheriff stirs furor with crackdown on illegals," all the negative framing of the issue is used against Sheriff Joe Arpaio's efforts to curb illegal immigration and those who stand against him are constantly given the benefit of the doubt with neutral or positive language describing their actions. Additionally, whenever illegals are mentioned they are presented as victims, one "afraid" immigrant even being quoted as calling our immigration officials "the devil."
