Posted at 2:19pm on May 13, 2008 Pulling a Kowalski
Honoring one of our own
By The Directors
Alex Kowalski is an institution at RedState. He's been around here longer than most and has taken more leaves of absence than most. RedState would not be RedState without people like Alex Kowalski. He's given his time, talent, enthusiasm, money, and a heck of a lot more, and we're better for it.
Perhaps the most distinguished legacy of Alex at this site is the coining of a phrase. When someone goes "Kowalski" they are replying to themselves in a comment thread. Alex is notorious for this. Long before Krempasky spilled the beans in a comment thread one day, it was routine for the site contributors to note someone "pulling a Kowalski" in a post. Since the day krempasky let slip that this was our in-house term, it has become part of our culture.
Today we'd like to announce that we'll be making that part of RedState's permanent culture. When RedState 3.0 launches, any user who attempts to reply to that user's own comment will not see the "reply to this" button. Instead, the user will see the button at right.
While we realize this is a rather in-house joke, we think it is most appropriate and a great way to recognize Alex's contribution to the growth of this site.

Posted at 4:43pm on May 12, 2008 Josh Bresnahan: Dip Shtick
By Erick
I don't think anyone really expects anything less from the Politico whose "journalists" did multiple hatchet jobs on Fred Thompson that, when video surfaced, were directly contradicted by facts.
There is also the famous Thompson to drop out article that appeared just as voting was starting in Iowa and which proved bogus.
Then, of course, there is the Hillary doesn't have a lock on Pennsylvania story that you had to read multiple times to even posit a guess as to why they thought so.
So today Josh Bresnahan, one of the Politico's "journalists" pours out his sarcasm on Human Events' Jed Babbin for calling Steny Hoyer "Boss Hoyer." Jed's article focuses on Hoyer's testimony before a House committee looking into Democrat violations of House rules.
Bresnahan casts aspersions on Jed's journalistic integrity while seeking to downplay what the House is looking into -- whether or not a vote was closed and then reopened in violation of House rules to ensure a Democrat win. Along the way, the "journalist" identifies Babbin as
an unsuccessful Republican congresssional candidate and former undersecretary of Defense under the first President Bush
Well, he got the "undersecretary of Defense" part right, but Jed has not run for office since high school, and he won that race.
Glass houses, stone throwing, and all that.

Posted at 7:43am on May 12, 2008 Congratulations to Jenna Hager and the Family - UPDATED
By kowalski
[Update: I edited this post to reflect the fact that Jenna took Henry's last name, which I had not known for sure when I wrote the post. Obviously I wasn't on the invitation list. So much for the VRWC.]
This is a good time to say congratulations to Jenna Hager and her husband, Henry Hager, and to everyone in the Bush and Hager families for what looks to have been a beautiful and tastefully private wedding yesterday in Texas.

This link to KSK has language that is NSFW. There, fair warning. Now go read it - it's the best response to silly anti-Second Amendment columns you're going to find: total ridicule.
Posted at 8:56am on May 8, 2008 RedState 3.0: Where do we go from here?
By Erick
We've got about two weeks left. Where do we go from here?
It is my intention for RedState 3.0 to be much more focused on activism. In fact, that has been my goal from day one of the redesign: provide tools to the VRWC to organize online via RedState and collaborate on campaigns, issues, activism, etc.
Many of us feel -- and it is a *feeling* -- that whoever wins on November 4th, we'll be in the minority.
So here's the thing. First, what Mike said.
Second, you don't want to rah-rah John McCain? Fine. I'm happy to pull your weight around. All you have to do is turn your fire on the Democrats. This site aims to win and it is our intention to support McCain. If you don't want to, I'm not going to make you. But, see the third point.
Third, there is a candidate in your state that you support. He or she may be running for mayor or city council or district attorney or the state legislature or governor or congress. There may be a *Democrat* you cannot tolerate running for office in your state. Heck, there may be two or five or a dozen such candidates. There might even be an issue on the ballot you care about.
Get writing about that candidate or issue. In RedState 3.0 you'll have the power to create the state sites. Your post on candidate X in Wisconsin will be on the front page of RedState Wisconsin.
Read on . . .

Posted at 2:28pm on May 7, 2008 Winning Isn't Losing
And Politics Ain't Bean Bag
By krempasky
Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work for giants of the conservative movement. First Morton Blackwell, then Richard Viguerie. Both, in their own way, have been absolutely instrumental to the successes conservatives have seen over the past 40 years.
I'm not giving away any state secrets in pointing out that Richard and Morton have very different styles. They're both builders, but when it comes to the art of coalition politics - there's no question in my mind that the advice Morton gives to conservatives (and Republicans) ought to plastered on a lot of walls here at RedState.
15. Don't treat good guys like you treat bad guys.
We get the joke: center-right moderates and conservatives have used each other as punching bags for a long, long time - and we don't presume to settle that particular rift here at RedState. To try would be laughable.
But we DO expect folks to keep your eyes on the prize: stopping the most liberal candidate we've seen in a generation from winning the White House. Make no mistake, Obama isn't "new" or "revolutionary." He's a talented speaker, but he's not a serious leader prepared for dangerous times. This is a guy who called for a worldwide ban on fissile materials, for crying out loud.
More important, when you find yourself getting torqued at the squish who doesn't think campaign finance reform is near-treason or the neanderthal conservative that would rather focus on Terry Schiavo than fixing the immigration problem...take a deep breath. Put down the keyboard. Go get a drink.
So two final requests: stop throwing rocks at folks who ought to be your friends at least some of the time, and if someone calls you a name or beats you up a bit - good grief, grow a thicker skin. Politics ain't beanbag.

Posted at 10:28am on May 7, 2008 Are Science and Christianity Compatible?
By Harold Vaughn
As a result of the recent post entitled “Tear Down this Wall: I Just Saw Expelled” by Tom Bombadil I felt led as a Christian to search the internet for any thing about how science and Christianity are compatible and I found a very lengthy and very detailed article Christianity and Science ARE Compatible. I’m not sure if anyone has ever posted a link to the article before, but I thought I would share it.

Posted at 7:45am on May 7, 2008 The Onion Jumps the Shark
By kowalski
It was bound to happen eventually. The infamous team of depressives over at The Onion (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of MoveOn.Org) has finally produced an offensive parody of the Pope that doesn't really shock anyone, considering the source, and doesn't even make the people who are supposed to get the joke laugh. This comes on the heels of their ONN piece on John McCain and the secret service, the title of which was revised because as originally written, it sounded like McCain was begging for an assassination attempt. For anyone who missed it, the title of that story has changed within the past 36 hours on their website, after what I can only guess was a little afterthought on the part of The Onion's editors. I guess they weren't intersted in a visit from the actual secret service after joking that the Senator was calling for his own assassination.

Although I have no idea to what, if anything, he's clinging to besides (apparently) Obama. Still, if you're a lurker you may enjoy his general prediction for today. (Via Masson's Blog)
I guess that there really aren't any good exit polls available yet.

Posted at 3:24pm on May 1, 2008 Wanna see Government in Action (and something sad?)
By kowalski
[Update:I have no doubt that someone is going to tell me in this thread that the way the rules are written, it's better for the government to destroy this kind of valuable equipment and sell it for scrap than it is to take care of it. But to me it is still morally repugnant.]
[Update II: It also occurred to me that some people might insinuate from this particular example that I'm singling out the military. Don't worry about that. The waste is everywhere, and probably the military made better use of these machines than the Department of Health and Human Services would have while they were still operational.]
