And so we say "Au Revoir" to the Obama-Wright flap...

NB: we do not say "Adieu."

As you know, the junior Senator from Illinois is making a speech today:

Obama to Confront Racial Issues
By TOM RAUM – 54 minutes ago

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama is seeking to distance himself from "stupid statements" by his longtime pastor that have aggravated racial divisions in the contentious Democratic primary battle. He is calling for both sides to tone down their rhetoric.

The Illinois senator is using a speech at a site near the nation's birthplace to present what his campaign said would be a comprehensive take on "race, politics, and unifying our country."

Among other things, the Illinois Democrat was seeking to calm the uproar over racially tinged sermons by his former pastor at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, remarks that have threatened to undercut Obama's campaign theme of easing the racial divide.

Alternatively, you can go with the Washington Times' simultaneously more cynical and more accurate take on it: "Obama eyes white suburbs of Philadelphia."

I predict that, no matter how he actually does on this speech, the media will more or less take it as answering his critics, carefully fold up the whole controversy, and thriftily put it in storage. It's still a month to Pennsylvania, and this story has pretty much hit saturation point anyway. Hillary's turn, next - then maybe a quick shot at McCain, just to remind him that he's not entirely off the hook until after the conventions. Obama supporters should not necessarily breathe easier, though. Their guy is now off the pedestal. He's on the rotation to get smacked around, now.

Yes, I too look forward to seeing how he reacts to being treated as a mere human.

Rhetorical End Point? by ggross56

I don't think so. I said here that Sen. Obama just dug the hole deeper.

is going to ask "both sides to tone down their rhetoric."

that's right. ye bigots don't need to change your views, just tone it down. and ye who oppose bigotry of all kinds, you shouldn't speak so loudly.

not exactly leadership.

but i agree that the media, always eager to make bad things about obama go away, will do everything they can to make this go away

individual columnists, like liberal Richard Cohen, may still keep it alive for a while. we'll see.

on more important items like..............Rezko!!!

Reverend Wright is just the tree. Now certainly he was the loudest and largest tree in the forest that is Trinity United Church, but to focus just on the vile, hate-filled fiery sermons of Reverend Wright is to miss the other wise equally hate filled, separatist, white vilifying church. To find Obama’s actions objectionable does not require proof that he may have sat in a pew and nodding along while Reverend Wright spat his hatred. It is vile that for 20 years Obama walked through the doors and sat in the church, regardless of the sermons and speakers. In the biggest whitewashing (should we call it black washing?) of the truth I’ve seen in my lifetime, in 2006 as Obama prepared his campaign for POTUS Trinity United Church modified its website by substituting this 12 point About Us descriptive for this scrubbed 10 point About Us descriptive.

DO NOT MISS THE FOREST of what is so objectionable about the basis tenants of this church by focusing just on the outrageous Reverend Wright.

In a move straight out of the John Grisham A Time to Kill read this and substitute white, Korean, Islamic, Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish, Mexican, Swedish, French, et al anything else in place of black and tell me if it is acceptable.

This is a very recent 20 year lapse in judgment by Barak Obama to accept this "Value" System.

That's the takeaway that McCain should remember from this. Obama can be rolled. He's run a very good campaign, but look at the mistakes that Clinton has made!

Consistent, relentless conservatism and devotion to principle can beat this guy. Obama screams situational ethics.

In fairness, I don't think it's accurate to say he "threw him under the bus", he specifically and strongly denounced some things his pastor said, but he also said he could not disown his pastor and spoke highly of most of the things he's done.

I actually agreed with most of what he said for the first 2/3rds of the speech. He got weird toward the end when he started talking about corporate America and Health Care.

Rage! I feel rage!
My ten year old is sitting here watching with me. She just got home from school.
She just said, Mom, I think he just called me racist. That makes me cringe. Because all she knows about Obama is the fawning praise her friends have given him at school. I DO NOT talk politics with my kids, reasons should be obvious.
AGH!!!!!
Come on America! Wise the "f" up!

And Barack can make sure that she never has to eat it again.
Give me a break.

He called whites racist? I guess I missed that, I was too distracted by that tingling sensation running up my leg whenever he speaks.

Not.

Courage becomes a living and an attractive virtue when it is regarded not only as a willingness to die manfully, but also as a determination to live decently.
