What's the price of gasoline, Nancy?

She doesn't have a clue.

By Mark Kilmer Posted in | | Comments (40) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

From where I sit and type these words, gasoline is $3.59/gallon at the nearest Sheetz. The Speaker of the People's House – to whom we fondly refer with her given name, Nancy – just told TV talkshow host Larry King that it was $2.59 on average but higher in California. King corrected her: the national average is $3.50. She said, "Oh, it's $3.50. It's down 6-cents."

In orbit without a clue, Nancy soldiers on.

I'm one of the fist ones to glee in Pelosi bashing, but I think the $2.59 was a faux-pas and not her being out of touch. She would have reacted far differently if she had actually thought it was higher.

Now also found at The Minority Report

She's a good politician, and she knows how to keep going as if she hadn't made a mistake. Her problem was, she was incorrect even in her recovery. Her real problem remains, I think, that she has no clue how much gasoline costs in the United States.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, I suppose.

That was great. I think it also has something to do with breathing in too much smug air on the left coast and living in the fever swamp of D.C. the rest of the time.

Price of Gas by itdiehard

My guess is Nancy has not bought gas for years and forgot what was written on her queue cards that some intern wrote for her..

Out of touch by Darin H

Clueless Nancy has no answer for why she said that she had a comprehensive plan to bring down gas prices, but they are way up since Democrats took control of congress.

I Wonder . . . . by Bourbeau

I wonder what the MSM would be doing if Bush made that mistake? Not really, I know what they'd be doing; it would be the lead story on every evening news, and headlines across the country. Yep, we're fair and balanced in this country.

Bush 1 when he didn't know the cost of a loaf of bread--pointing and laughing. I can understand being off by a dime or so on the gas prices since they go up literally by the hour on some days, but not being off by at least a dollar. Libs, however, especially those at the top of the food chain, are way too hip to have to keep up with such plebian details.

This issue is going to hurt... by liberalrepublican

Environmentalists bare a heavy burden for the high price of gas, but it ain't gonna stick.

The story of an oilman coming to Washington with 6 years of a Republican congress, gas goes to $5/gallon or so, oil companies make the largest profits in the history of the world and they still get MASSIVE tax breaks...the campaign narrative writes itself.

McCain needs to distance himself from Bush on this issue.

Did you see the Jon Stewart clip of Bush campaigning in 2000? Brutal.

Will Mr. Straighttalk Express pander, or try to spread the iight of truth?

of the U.S.. That's not a bad thing. Also, if you don't already know it, the dreaded "big oil" companies only make around 8 to 9 cents on every gallon they sell. Government, which has absolutely NOTHING to do with actually pulling it out of the ground and shipping it makes around 19 cents on every gallon federally and up to a combined total of over 50 cents/gallon when including state taxes. The oil companies also pay payroll taxes and corporate taxes on all this lifeblood they provide. Who's the real problem? Hint: it's not the oil companies. God bless big oil, I'm glad they're part of my retirement plan. Chances are, they're a big part of your plan too.

I think she just misspoke by The Default Attorney

I think it's pretty obvious she meant to say "3.56" but just misspoke. Otherwise the preceding "three times as much as a dollar something" wouldn't make much sense, nor her reaction to it being $3.50 as being down 6 cents. Think about it.

That said, I live in San Francisco, and on my street it is $4.17, so she definitely has no idea what's going on in her hometown.

simply misspoke? Her entire answer points to the obvious: that she actually has no clue at all.

Hmm by MikeO

$2.59…

$3.50…

Down six cents…

Hike!

I could possibly buy the "meant to say" argument, but it is by no means "obvious."

Speaker Pelosi's is so wrong about so much else that it's no stretch at all to think that, in her alternate reality, $2.59 - $3.50 = $0.06.

I'd like to see the color of the sky on her planet.

That would be potato.

Wrong. by Mark Kilmer

You're assuming that she read the Dem talking points and that she memorized the price of gas as written there.

She misspoke, in the sense that she did not know the price of gas but spoke anyway. It's that simple, and let us stop calling me silly. 'K?

if Bush said this? I personally don't think its a big deal, an obvious slip up. But the reactions from the left if this was Bush (or any republican) would be insane.

I *really* hate to say it. But I have to.

I agree with some of the other posters here. Even assuming she doesn't pump her own gas, one cannot help driving down the road and seeing the big "Regular $3.5x" signs plastered at every gas station across the country. On top of that, we're being bombarded with it in the media constantly.

As someone else stated, she did say that gas was "nearly 3 times what it was when Bush took office" at $1+. It wouldn't makes sense to make that statement while believing gas, on average, was $2.59.

I don't want to, but I have to....she can't be *that* out of touch with reality. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt on this one and saying she misspoke.

Ugh. I feel all dirty now.

Brian

You're assuming that she remembered what she saw if she did.

And rememeber, she said specifically that the NATIONAL AVERAGE PRICE OF GAS, not the price on all those signs which fly past her window, was $2.59.

She hasn't a leg to stand on, here.

$2.59 IS nearly 3 times $1. So it makes perfect sense. If she had known that the average price was $3.50. I would have expected her to say "more than 3 times"

Gas Stations at 30,000 ft by From ME to you

Well....there are some! Currently the USAF is still using KC-135s. They're usually referred to offically as "aerial tankers" and popularly (in my AF circles anyway) as "flying gas stations" but why quibble. They do not, however, dispense regular, usually the latest version of jet fuel and I'm not sure what the current price per gallon is. But I'm sure Ms. Pelosi knows that! Maybe we should ask???

P.S RE: "The HinzSight Report" great name, great 'site'!

on the sides of those KC-135s, not that it would matter -- I'm sure she takes the "Express." The only thing she has to re-fuel is her drink!

And thanks.

Re: "re-fuel her drink" by From ME to you

Naw....she has people for that! LOL

Had this been a Bush/Cheney/McCain statement, the press would've been on it like vultures to roadkill.

Of course she misspoke by Maggie in Indiana

but if it was a GOP leader it would be the biggest joke on TV. With McCain shooting himself and the party in the foot for the last 2 days we deserve this little tid-bit.

The truth by AzRenegade

The truth here is either she had a plan to bring down gas prices and it failed miserably, or she failed miserably to create a plan.

Is it a coincidence that the economy was humming, along growing steadily, creating jobs, dropping the deficit faster that expected, until the all knowing and all powerful economic genius Democrats took control of the purse strings in '06 and things have been going downhill since?

And then we have Ms Clinton claiming the Bush years have been an economic disaster? Does this woman speak only to audiences of illiterate Rip Van Winkles?

I don't know by The Default Attorney

I just saw a clip where Bush told the Pope that his speech was "awesome." I didn't see that on mainstream media anywhere. And that's not a flub, that's just, IMO, an inappropriate response to a speech made by the Supreme Pontiff.

That makes no sense. Awesome is a perfectly acceptable term to use. I doubt he said "like that was like totally awesome, dude." Do you think "Awesome God" is an inappropriate song too?
