An Interview with David Keene

Yesterday, I talked with David Keene, Chairman of the American Conservative Union. Mr. Keene, as many of you know, has endorsed Mitt Romney for President. I discussed Mr. Keene's decision for this endorsement with him in this interview, in which he frankly assesses the strengths and weaknesses of Romney as a candidate, and explains why he thinks Romney is the right man for the job.
You can hear the whole interview with Dave Keene here.

I disagree with the previous comment. Iowa is not lost. Huckabee is not invincible, and the race is far from over. Romney is very strong in Iowa still, and as more details surface regarding Huckabee's past with regards to liberal use of pardon among other weaknesses, Huckabee could very well suffer defeat in Iowa.
I now think the only one in Iowa that can beat Romney is Thompson, but only if evangelical Christian quickly shift, which I think is unlikely. There is already a group calling themselves "Iowans for Some Semblance of Christian Decency". Now this group may be a extreme, and they are probably going over the top, but they are attacking Huckabee, big time.

That's a very interesting interview you had with David Keene. It seems that one of the major reasons he endorsed Romney was to stop Giuliani from winning the nomination and thereby splitting the conservative base. I think that is a reasonable calculation.
He seems to believe that Huckabee's rise in Iowa (although Huckabee has risen in the polls elsewhere too) is likely to benefit Giuliani down the road. But there seems to be some mixed opinion about the viability of Huckabee past Iowa. Many believe that he can go the distance, that he can raise money and win primaries in the South.
I guess the question is whether a Stop Giuliani campaign and/or a Stop Huckabee campaign will begin before the Romney campaign suffers a significant defeat. For Romney, it might be all about timing and having enough campaign cash to whether a 2nd place Iowa showing.
If I were Romney's campaign manager, I'd probably spend very little additional money in Iowa and dump a ton of money in New Hamsphire and Michigan as a firewall strategy. This might not be what Romeny's campaign envisioned months ago. But things are changed a lot in the last month given the emergence of "Huckmania."
