John Edwards to quit presidential race
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

DENVER - Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters' sympathies, The Associated Press has learned.

The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two aides. The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning — Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

Read on.

John Edwards has been rumored to be looking at supporting Senator Obama's campaign - which, at this point, could use all the help that it can get - but the article indicated that he has officially not yet made a decision on that topic. In this, his campaign demonstrates the same half-an-octave-up-or-down mentality that has been its bane since the campaign started. If he was going to leave-and-endorse, he should have done it earlier, and possibly improved Obama's chances; or he should have waited until after 2/5, and given himself a better chance of playing kingmaker at the convention. It's precisely this sort of neither-here-nor-there thinking that made many progressives wish that his wife was actually the one running*.

So ciao, former Senator Edwards. I would take more joy in your departure from this race if I had also taken your presence in it more seriously in the first place. As it is, I can only hope that, whichever campaign you end up in, you just keep doing whatever it is that you do so well.

For a given value of "well."

*Truth be told, while I don't really respect Elizabeth Edwards' political opinions at all, I do respect her as a person, and my prayers and good wishes to her in her current condition. For that matter, she'd have been twice the candidate that her husband was.

Who will get Edwards leftovers?

Will Edwards go back to Hedge fund management?

He drew large support from lower/middle class "average Joe" type voters - who have gone overwhelmingly towards Hillary. Granted, he did attract the lunatic left-wing fringe types as well, which I expect to go to Obama, but the vast majority were angry union guys, who (at least to this point) have overwhelmingly gone in favor of Hillary.

Well, I think that Edwards, after IA was clearly playing "spoiler" and was playing to the same sort of "new way" crowd as Obama. I can't see people who were attracted to the sheer audaciousness of the "two Americas" idea being wooed by the very dull rhetoric and rehashed ideas that make up Hillary's liberalism.

"Two Americas" was built on a demagoguing of idealism - and idealism is what Obama is going for. I say this is better for Obama than Clinton both on the substance and because I do believe that there is, even in the Democrat party, a significant "not Hillary" sentiment - and that sentiment can now coalesce around Obama.

on an otherwise dreary, dismal, no good, very bad day.

May this be the last we ever see of John Edwards.

If only we could have written off both Johns today...

I seriously doubt it by simpson316

May this be the last we ever see of John Edwards.

His ego is to big to ever go away.

i don't think by Brandozilla

any presidential candidate will ever match John Edwards trifecta of:
1. Anger
2. Stupidity
3. Fakeness

though Cynthia Mckinny by Brandozilla

is running for the green party, so perhaps he will not only be matched in those 3, but far exceeded.

... is out. Thank God.

Although, I am afraid that he may be able to wield disproportionate power over the nomination process. Could he parlay that into a Secretary of Labor or Attorney General position [shudder].

All the more reason to enthusiastically support the GOP nominee, whoever it is.

among voters was entirely prefab and fake.

Even though he was arguably the most far-left of this group of left-wing Dem candidates, his votes came from self-described conservative Democrats. That is, insofar as he got votes, they were not coming from the ultra left he was aiming his ultra left rhetoric and policies toward. Rather, they were voting for the Southern white guy under the impression that he was more conservative than Hillary or Obama. (Hey -- I didn't say they were smart voters.)

As a result, I think it's not so likely that these voters will migrate to Clinton or Obama. They're more likely to vote republican in the general. I happen to believe there are conservative democrats who on certain issues, especially the war will not support the democrat candidate. the right Republican candidate, that would be mccain, could win these voters.
