It Cannot Be Stressed Enough

Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are the most protectionist major Presidential candidates to come down the pike in recent memory. I say "recent" because, of course there is one particular President who was in the same league with both Clinton and Obama when it came to promulgating lousy trade policy and making the country suffer for it. I know that Charlie Black works for the McCain campaign and gets paid to throw elbows, but he is right to go where he goes verbally:
The growing shopping list of promises has also served further to sharpen the contrast with John McCain, the Republican nominee, who has staked out a robustly free-trade stance for the general election.
"The last time we had a protectionist president was Herbert Hoover [in office from 1929 to 1933] and look how that worked out," says Charlie Black, a senior adviser to Mr McCain. "We think we can win this debate in a general election."
The ghost of Hoover may be smiling now. The ghosts of Hawley and Smoot most certainly are. The rest of us have every reason to feel grim.

Senator Sherrod Brown.
"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.
McCain coming out as an outspoken free-trade advocate would absolutely doom his candidacy in the state's he needs to win, like Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
It would be like a Republican campaigning on a platform promising to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits. Even though that's a proper conservative position to take, it's absolutely stupid if you want to win.
The problem with trade right now (besides the current tough economic conditions) is Americans view China not as just an economic rival, but as an enemy of the United States that's also stealing their jobs.
Imagine if in the 1980's all of our manufacturing jobs were moving to the Soviet Union? Americans would be outraged, yet how is it any different that our current relationship with a Communist Evil Empire 2.0?
Republicans need to be careful what countries they advocate freer trade with, because most people associate "free trade" with more "Chinese Trade".

Do you believe that if elected either HRC or BO would push for something as atrocious as Hawley and Smoot?
While I have no doubt they both lack the economic judgment to propose something similar for pandering opportunities; I just can't see the congress, even as-is doing something so destructive.
