McClintock to run for Congress (CA-4)

Conservatives rejoice.

It had been a rumor.

Over at FreeRepublic, I've found the text of an e-mail declaring that California State Senator Tom McClintock will challenge for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Representative John Doolittle (R) in California's 4th Congressional District. Doolittle, as you might recall, has a bit of an Abramoff connection going down.

Read on for the text of the e-mail McClintock sent to supporters:

McClintock wrote:

Dear E-Team:

THANK YOU for your outpouring of support and encouragement in response to my consideration of a congressional candidacy. I am deeply grateful for the generosity and kind wishes that so many have expressed.

The polling from the 4th Congressional district has been overwhelming. As you may know, a conservative advocacy group commissioned a poll at the beginning of this month and it reported that I would begin the campaign with a 33-point lead over the nearest rival. I subsequently commissioned a full benchmark poll by a different firm that reported a margin of 38 points.

And so, I will be announcing my intentions at 10AM on Tuesday, March 4th at Auburn's Historic Courthouse (101 Maple Street, Auburn). I would be honored to have you join me for this announcement.

Despite this very sizeable lead, I must first defeat a liberal millionaire to represent this solidly conservative district. He has already vowed in the press that he will immediately unleash a $500,000 advertising blitz if I dare to challenge him.

You have stood with me through many challenges and I need your help to start this campaign on a strong note. Will you make an urgently needed contribution so that we will have the resources necessary to counter his promised media buy? Federal law limits contributions to $2,300 per individual and corporate contributions are prohibited. You may contribute securely on our website or mail checks to:

Thank you again for your enthusiastic and early support. This campaign will determine whether a consistent conservative will represent this district in Congress, and I intend to fight vigorously for that goal. After all, we will not be able to take back the Congress until we first take back our party. I have been fortunate and honored to have supporters like you at my side in times like these and will do the very best I can to be worthy of your confidence.

Best wishes,
Tom McClintock

Also in this race for Doolittle's safe Republican seat are former Congressman Doug Ose and former state Senator Rico Oller.

Senator McClintock is the favorite to win this race, but as he points out, Ose is a millionaire businessman.

: sigh :

Thanks Tom for rushing to rescue a safe seat from other good men who weren't going to lose the general anyway IN A DISTRICT YOU DON'T LIVE IN.

I'm not being petty. This represents everything I don't like about the man. I've never liked McClintock, and this just goes further to prove why.

It's not his ideas, he's smart and I agree with him far more often then not in areas of policy. Instead, it's his unwavering arrogance and virtual non-stop narcissism. I've never seen a politician with more of a savior complex since...well Barack Obama. But other then him, Tom has to be the guy. It's always all about Tom, never about much of anything else.

To paraphrase The Big Lebowski: "You're not wrong, Tom, you're just an a$$hole."

I hope virtually everything I know about the man is wrong. I truly do. I hope that if he wins the primary, that he'll also win the general. Both seem likely. I hope that assuming he does become a Congressman, that he's a good one and that his ideas, most of which are great, are fulfilled.

It seems more likely to me that he'll continue to be an egotistical jerk who alienates more people then he brings along with him. I truly hope I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

I will too, but Coburn isn't the cartoon that liberals like to portray him as. He's able to do what he's able to do because he's smart and savvy, not just because he's loud and obnoxious.

If McClintock ends up like Coburn, I'll be happy. I fear he'll end up like a bad liberal stereotype of Rick Santorum, if that makes any sense.

I didn't dislike Santorum, although he wasn't my favorite Senator.

Notice, I said a "bad liberal stereotype" of Santorum. There is a big difference between a bad liberal stereotype of Santorum and Santorum as he actually was.

Egland is set to endorse McClintock, for what it's worth, and Oller may get out too, says Flash Report. Which will clear the local CRA groups to endorse McClintock, too. Activists are ready for McClintock, too.

It's a good thing by SteveLA

McClintock was termed out soon, forget how soon, and he can't win at state wide elections, so maybe this is his ticket.

He's beyond being a fiscal conservative, he's a self proclaimed tight wad. Need more of those in Congress not spending our money.

Calm down by SteveLA

Neil

Calm down...don't pass out.

McClintock is a good guy, misguide and too far to the Right on the social issues for me, but he's just fine on being a tight wad.

But seriously, Tom Mc has been a bit ineffective in Sacramento, because frankly he does not play well with others, R's or D's. He's a bit like Ralphie Nader in that regard. In Congress, heck he might be a real asset to the Club for Growth and a real pain in the butt to the R leadership over the way they like to spend money. I think he'd make a fine CongressCritter.

If Egland and Oller get out, than I would support McClintock over Ose. Both he and Ose are actually not residents in this district, so that cancels them out. (Although Ose is at least from a neighboring district.) But McClintock has been a strong economic conservative in the state Senate, and he would be in the US House too. Plus, Ose, although he was a good Representative, should be running with his millions for statewide office, where his social positions would make him a very credible candidate, rather than jumping back to into Congress as a retread.

...Tom's consistant conservative voting record and profreedom message of all these years cannot be termed out or silenced, especiall here in increasingly Bolshevik California with the Menshevik Republicans "me too!"ing the Republican message into oblivion.

Due to the utter absense of any principled leaders in CA it behooves ALL of us in California(and nationally!) to help via money, word of mouth, feet, and money to elect Tom to this seat. With Cong Paul nearing the end of his stellar and incomparible Congressional career, Tom can and should be(prepared for) the standard bearer for not only the 4th District, California, the Congress itself but the national
conservative-libertarian-freedom army of America.

It is THAT important.

All the petty whining and complaining of this boards "conservative' posters is quite indicative of the state of the Conservatives/GOP today... those posters are NOT going to stand with Tom and the rest of us on the barricades- they are going to put the Good of the Party and the RHETORIC of the Party on a PEDESTAL locksteppingly with blindfolds on while America keeps BIPARTISANLY heading into a miasma of bankruptcy, collapsed currency, a hitech surveillance state and a soveriegtny-eroded republic.

Like I said all of us need to help get Tom Elected to this position - the fate of America-LET ALONE the Republican Party and California Republican Party DOES hang in the balance.

McClintock is a good candidate, but whether he can draw significant libertarian support remains to be seen.

I saw this comment out of the context of the story, and for a second thought it was a mashup of McCain, Clinton, and Barack.

Doesn't matter by Neil Stevens

Schwarzenegger won by 50 points. Reliable Republicans alone can carry this district without a problem.
