This is pretty much devastating. And the last line is well taken. In the event that this needs pointing out, people are piling on from all portions of the ideological spectrum. And yes, it is unbelievable that one of the two candidates to have made a virtue out of being a protectionist is now sneering at the protectionism of others. I too wonder whether Senator Obama really believes his own protectionist message. If so, he is woefully misinformed. If not, he is misleading the very people he wants to lead.

I don't know, I think this is a mountain out of a molehill. I live in a small town, we like our religion, we like our guns, but we are bitter.
I don't know if all these statements are that big of a deal. Are we happy with McCain? I still like Ron Paul.

be bitter about...I mean come on...you are breathing and you have access to the internet...

Most of the Ron Paul supporters are as out to lunch as the Obama supporters--though for totally different reasons.
The Obama supporters think Noam Chomsky is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
The Ron Paul supporters all have a crush on Ayn Rand.
It isn't a question of whether or not the individual parts of the statement are true. It's the implication of causality, and that the sentiments are WRONG, and only driven by bitterness.
He's saying that small town folks are bitter, because of the lack of jobs. And THEREFORE, they feel compelled to possess guns, and go to church, and hate black people and Hispanics, and immigrants of any culture, and free trade.
Let's flip that around. If you HAD good jobs, you'd have no compulsion to own guns- gun ownership is a pathology stemming from bitterness. You wouldn't "cling to your religion" - no point in caring about what God wants if you have what YOU want. You wouldn't be a racist either. Your hatred for black people stems from your bitterness over not having a very good job. And you'll be fine with Mexicans poring over the border in violation of the law, because your xenophobia is also a side effect of your bitterness.
Personally, I find this not just condescending, but evidence that Obama is lying about just about everything he claims to believe in, himself. What's HIS "excuse" for "clinging to religion"? Political expediency?
No fan of him, but I think this is the liberal big city media thinking they know what the small town america thinks. you aren't frustrated? You aren't annoyed at where this country is going? you like big government? you like mccain's immigration policy? you like what happened to your last mutual funds statement? I don't

unhappy perhaps but bitter....jeez take a prozac and live.

THis is huge. Are you religious BECAUSE your bitter or frustrated at your lot in life? Are you against illegal immigration BECAUSE of your lot in life? That is the issue here. It's not whether or not people are bitter and/or frustrated, of course they are. The question is, if you weren't bitter and/or frustrated would you suddenly disbelieve in the Gospel. Would you suddenly see no truth in God and the bible. Would you suddenly say, "Open the borders to everyone, who cares about the law". would you suddenly say, "2nd amendment is passed its time". The Obama campaign is purposely trying to make this seem as if he only said people were bitter but he was really saying that Religion only survives because people are poor and lost their jobs. People only value the 2nd amendment because of their economic situation etc.
Don't let him off the hook on this one. He was very clear in his original statement. Don't allow him to bait and switch
I thought this admin campaigned on not nation building, now we're nation building. don't like socialized medicine? say hello to prescription drug plan. And this isn't coming out of your taxes, just going on your credit card.

fine with nation building so debate with someone else on that!

These comments by Obama aren't a big deal, this really just looks like an attempt to make something out of nothing. Deal with economic and government issues, don't try to make something from nothing. McCain has is own foot in mouth issues too

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!
I was born in a small town. I spent many a formative year in a small town. My family went to church and I went to sunday school. I grew up around guns and they put much food on our table. I grew up around people who are not like me and never thought much about it. It just was. And although I no longer live in a small town, I am not bitter.
My life is not perfect. It never was. But there are far more blessings to be counted than resentments to be crying about.
Forgive me for the use of the word my fellow redstate poster, but I feel as a people we have become far too jaded in our lives. Do we really need 6 TVs and 4 cars and 2 cell phones and an ipod to be happy?
We have so much yet are thankful for so little.

Don't get hung up on the alleged accuracy of the term "bitter."
What's much more serious is Obama's contention that Americans "cling to" religion or guns simply because they're "frustrated" over economic conditions.
Sorry, Karl Marx, but no. There's more to history than economics. Hillary's reply to Obama was spot on:
Americans don't embrace religion because they're materially poor, but because they're spiritually rich.
Or as I would put it: A decent person's moral convictions are not for sale.
You can't diminish the importance of religion in a person's life by offering him a comfortable living. Many religious people have freely chosen to eschew material luxuries in order to pursue spiritual enlightenment and fulfillment.
Religion is NOT just "the opiate of the masses," a distraction from economic class issues--no matter what Obama thinks.
"It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
I would respectfully disagree with you on one point Mr Sinz.
I am equally disturbed by Obama's lack of respect for religious values and the Second Amendment as I am with his foolish charges of xenophobia and racism.

Obama's statement drips condescension for the "middle Americans" from whom he wants votes. The gross elitism of this statement can somewhat mask the "out of touch" quality it belies for what is happening in this country & among our fellow citizens.
