Obama's Fear

Did this ad, "run in South Dakota," scare Obama into breaking his commitment to accept public financing for the general election?
The Washington Post's Shailagh Murray reported Obama claimed he opted out of public financing to be able to compete with independent conservative groups, although no such well-funded national organizations have materialized:
When a reporter pointed to the dearth of well-heeled, GOP-aligned independent groups emerging, Obama responded by asserting that they could "pop up pretty quickly and have enormous influence," adding: "And we've already seen them -- and there was an ad run in South Dakota . . . where it took a speech that I had made, extolling faith, and made it seem as if I had said that America was a Muslim nation."
Camp Obama must have some nightmarish polling data on this ad if it is indeed the reason Obama subjected himself to the criticism he received for his monumental flip flop.

when he can make so much more money from his fundraising machine? Just because it belies every platitude he has ever mouthed about being a "reformer" and against the "old politics"?
I am certain that if that SD ad had never happened, he would have simply used the fear of the great bogeyman, the 527s, as his excuse for doing what he believes will give him the biggest advantage in the election. He is all marketing and no substance, Republicans who support him are making a huge mistake.
is directly proportional to the number of offended in the congregation.
So, before you go, what you're saying is that, based on that congregation, the sermon was completely false?
Or, maybe you're saying that he was dead-on accurate because it upset us?
Under your logic, David Duke could go to Trinity and preach a sermon based on his line of thinking, and he would be speaking the truth.
In politics, you have your word and your friends; go back on either and you're dead. (Rule #11 of the public policy process)
a comment with a (maybe not so obvious) play on the sponsor and the subject matter of the ad, that apparently Mr. Obama's response demonstrated how embarrassingly accurate it (the ad) was to him. This was my first post, had I though of the ambiguousness of the meaning I would have been less vague. In the future I will be excruciatingly thorough in my commentary.
Hey, this is no big deal. On top of hypocrite and liar, we can now add race baiter:

For a guy who didn't listen to his pastor for twenty years, Senator Obama sure learned a lot.

instead of the substance. Of course, given that the substance is true, there is a problem, and that problem, a career of and present views and policies of far leftism is why the dems lose presidential elections unless they run a Bill Clinton with a Perot assist.

That is very smart pool on his part.
So far the love affair between Obama and the media has continued unabated. But there are chinks in the armor. The public doesn't care about campaign finance reform, and most people aren't tuned into the election yet. But the media does care and they are paying excruiating attention. They won't forget Obama's public financing reversal or the disingenuous way he tried to justify it. If he compounds the error by starting to lash out at the media when it presses him, we could have a virtually level playing field by the fall. I think McCain can win on a level field, once we scrub the shine off the Rock Star.

We need to remember who stands to benefit from increased money going to the candidate:
1) the candidate
2) the media to whom the candidate pays many, many millions of dollars for advertising.
Which makes the media happier, the one who is restricted to $84 million in public funds, or the one who stands to rake in 2 or 3 times that amount? The more money Obama spends, the more the media are going to love him.
The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.
"The Media" are people like Rupert Murdoch/News Corp., Disney, NBC/Universal, and CBS.
"The Press" are the individual reporters who cover Obama (and McCain). And they (likely) won't see a dime of that extra money Obama pours into The Media. Therefore, they'll be far more interested in how Obama's letting down their sacred cow ideals than in the fact that he's pounding money into their boss' profit margins.
So I agree with the original poster - this doesn't win Obama any friends in The Press, and if he starts lashing out at The Press (as distinct from The Media) he may start making some lasting enemies.
And that would be all to the good...
When I see some other network newscasters excoriating Obama about the campaign finance flip flop I'll switch my view on this.
So far the only talking head who is blasting Obama for this is on PUBLIC broadcasting service (Mark Shields).
The rest of the talking heads on TV are panting over the extra income for their boss' coffers and will not interrupt their Obama bootlicking.
The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.
That way, they get to filter the message more via "free" media.

-ure maybe, but what has always stumped me are those that care so much about who puts on an ad. I don't. I can watch the ad and decide if a I agree with the ad. Like laws and congress. I don't care if they meet behind closed doors and who gives them money. I can read the laws they propose and decide if I favor the law.

Run whatever ads you want. Heck, they don't even have to contain true statements! I just want to know who paid for it.
That's it.
Buy time in the NYT, WSJ, or BFE Bugle and I don't care... I just want a prominent mention at the end (or bottom) of the ad of who paid for it.

Isn't it something that the "free media" you are talking about is actually referred to as "earned media?"

It is one of opportunism and shallow self-aggrandizement.
That does not wear well, and it is not a good way to make complex decisions like he will face in the coming months.
You know who the greatest pragmatist Presidents we had were? Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and James Carter. Those are the ones Obama is modeling himself after.
Of course, the big difference is that Wilson, Roosevelt, and Carter had the courage of their convictions. Obama rolls over like a weak kitten every chance he gets.
Comes to mind.

Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin!"

The Obama runs his campaign as someone who has never really had to make tough decisions...and he hasn't! And he is not very good at those he does have to make.
by a margin greater than two-to-one.
To call Obama disingenuous is being more than kind.
