Portman!

Here's hoping that Rob Portman does indeed allow his hat to be tossed in the Vice Presidential ring. Beyond talk of putting Ohio in the Republican column, a Portman Vice Presidency would ensure that there will be a high ranking official in the Executive Branch who is intimately familiar with the doctrine and benefits of free market economics in general and budget and trade issues in particular (Portman is a former United States Trade Representative and Budget Director). He has a sterling intellect and gets along very well with people on both sides of the aisle. And he would be a terrific President if called upon to serve.
John McCain could do worse than to select Rob Portman for the Vice Presidency. Let's hope he doesn't.

Why isn't John Kasich's name being floated? From Ohio, fiscally conservative, seems to have higher name id than Portman. Why not, other than the fact that he seems perfectly content in the private sector?
If you wanted an Ohioan in this administration who is ideologically conservative, and who understands free market economics, why not Ken Blackwell?

recognition, though. He'd probably make a better governor and Ohio could use a strong Conservative Republican at the helm.
