Gilmore A Non-Starter At CPAC

Jim Gilmore did what he thought he had to do. He attacked Romney. He attacked Rudy. And he attacked McCain.
Gilmore proclaimed himself the only conservative, but he did not mention Brownback. He threw lots of punches to claim the mantel for himself and in the process barely got any applause from the crowd.
In fact, Jim Gilmore, in his efforts to go all out at CPAC, might have done himself in. He failed to attract a lot of enthusiasm from the student activists and his largest applause lines were about Ronald Reagan -- not himself.
He also tried mightily to remind people that Virginia, under his watch, suffered an attack on 9/11, just like Rudy. The difference, of course, was that Rudy was in the thick of it and Gilmore was not. And judging by his showing the straw poll, Gilmore did not get any traction with his late effort.

Right after Gilmore's speech, I went up to him in the lobby and told him I was from Alexandria and I told him that I recalled when he ran for governor of VA he was in favor of legalized abortion in the first trimester and I asked him if that was still true. He had a "Crap what do I say look on his face and he told me that he thought abortion should be legal in the first 8 weeks. Interesting. I then asked one of his campaign managers and he told me he "didn't know" where Gilmore standed in the first trimester.
Interesting.
What kind of hubris does it take to believe you should be the POTUS- when 6,000 fellow conservatives give you 2% of their votes?
I really can't stand guys like this..

I am a proud Virginian and would love to see the state that has been the home of so many Presidents get another one in the Oval office, but it will not and should not be Jim Gilmore.
I was an intern on Gilmore's campaign for Governor. I got the opportunity to see him in action and drive his wife around the state while she was giving speeches. It was the first real campaign I worked on (since then I've been a speech writer and a campaign manager in Virignia).
After my experiences on the campaign and as a Virginian while he was Governor, I can say that he is not a viable candidate for President.
As a candidate he was a one trick pony. All he talked about was eliminating the car tax. He got elected because of that and because Governor Allen was so popular at the time. He did get the car tax eliminated, but not completely and it came back.
He has no charisma, he did not seem like an overly intelligent man, he did not inspire me or other conservatives and he has no chance of inspiring voters outside of Virginia.
He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. He ran a horrible campaign and he was not a good candidate. But he got a bad opponent and he lucked out by following Allen. His resume before being governor and after being governor is not impressive.
He is probably one of the least attractive candidates for the GOP nomination and only his huge ego is keeping him in the race. He has no chance in the race... even to be a VP candidate.
