Time to huddle up and get things right
By Ben Domenech Posted in conservative crackup | Republicans — Comments (53) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

All right, boys and girls. Time for a huddle.
So what's this all about? You like going off on your own, like you don't need anybody else? You like getting pushed off the line? You like the other team pointing and laughing?
You know they've been saying we were going to choke. Even our fans have been saying it. The run is over. We got old too fast, we care about different things than winning these days.
Maybe we're stupid. Maybe we've gotten cracked on the skull too many times to know what's good for us. Maybe we should just give up, take the easy way out, hug the mat til the bell rings and we can crawl back to our mamas and eat some fried chicken.
Yeah. Maybe. Maybe they've been saying we were doomed forever, wishing it were true. And still we keep coming back, cause we're too stupid, too knotheaded, or cause we don't want that damn chicken yet.
We just won't stay the hell down. And this time is no different.
Enough. What they say doesn't matter. What we do here, now, that's what matters. Time to shape up, or we're going to get the crap beat out of us. That's the truth. We keep it together now, or we're going down hard. And if we don't get on same page here, we'll be going down without a fight.
That ain't me. I know that ain't you, neither. So let's make them prove something. Let's make them show if they're made of more than soy and good intentions. Time to remember what team we're on. Time to remember what's at stake. Time to go to our strengths, and make them stop us.
Let's hit them in the freaking mouth.

However, for Pete's sake let's agree on a common message and agenda.
The message needs to be much more simplistic. I was speaking last night with a bunch of people that actively vote, but are relative political neophytes. They were much more attuned to the overall Democrat Party message. Some of that is of course due to parroting by the MSM and a lack of real depth on the issue. However, like it or not these folks are a plurality of the voters out there right now. They are answering the polls and contributing their money. IMO, right now this is grossly underestimated as a factor in the next election.
There is a substantial amount of work that needs to be done STARTING NOW. If you believe otherwise or posit now is the time for a parochial stand, I think you will be substantially shocked after the next election.

I agree with WW, I'm all in. The lying MSM, and those scumbag liars who are currently lying about Rush Limbaugh on the Senate floor, the lying, treasonous cowards at State and CIA and the NYT, WaPo CBS, NBC, ABC -- they will not define us.
They have the home-field advantage and owning the referees, the timekeepers, and the replay officials. But it's the start of the 4th quarter, and here we are. Spitting blood on the ground between plays. Scowling with hearty disdain at the enemy across the line. Hey pal, I'm blitzing this play, and I'm gonna stick your QB's head in the ground, and step on him when I get up. Can you stop me?
It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?

Right. And it's important that we list strengths of our own. "We're not Democrats" does not qualify as a strength. "Democrats are scary" does not qualify as a strength. We tried those last election and it didn't work. The Liberal Party tried that in Canada last election against Harper's Conservative Party and it didn't work.
What are our strengths?
We believe in winning the war against terror.
We believe in the sanctity of human life.
We believe in less government and less government spending. By extention, we believe in lower taxes.
Those are basics upon which all members of the conservative coalition should agree. I daresay that a majority of Americans believe in these basics too.
It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?
We believe in winning the war against terror. - okay
We believe in the sanctity of human life. - What if Rudy's the nominee?
We believe in less government and less government spending. By extention, we believe in lower taxes. - What if Huckabee's the nominee?
It'd be a lot easier to buy this if the candidates actually did.
Some can trust Rudy. Those of you who do hopefully understand that there are plenty of us who think that, especially when faced with a Democrat Senate, he will not nominate the types of judges he has said he will. Heck, he hasn't even said whether he thinks Roe is good law.
I've been reading about "My Grandfather's Son" by Clarence Thomas, and been moved to think about my Grandfather and one of his sayings: "Life ain't for sissies".
I think that is the over riding message for conservatives.
On the War:
1: Liberals are saying we should leave Iraq, that we can't win, that's not worth it. Okay- so what is their plan for fighting Al-Qaeda? Nothing- they don't have one. They seem to think that if we make nice that the terrorists will make nice too, and we can all go back to the way the world was pre-9/11. Well that ain't gonna happen- life ain't for sissies, and until the liberals realize that you better not put them in charge of the War on Terror.
2: War sucks- people die- good people die. This ain't no video game. Our soldiers are over there fighting and dying. Liberals think that the way to honor them is pull them out, admit they lost and bring them home. Conservative think that the best way to honor both our dead and living soldiers is to back them up and not wuss out on them when they are making progress. So what if we don't want to be in Iraq, life ain't for sissies- when your in a bad situation you don't run away, you make the best you can of it. Our American soldiers ain't sissies, and neither are we.
Domestic Policy:
Life is hard. Democrats are always promising a return to the Garden of Eden were everything is handed to you without labor. But conservatives know that man eats by the sweat of his brow. We don't need no $5000 bond for our kids- paid for with our kids future money. It's a get rich ponzi-scheme. We can take care of our own kids- if the government wasn't always taking so much of the money we labor for. Congress and the President should take a pay cut. Not just a freeze in increases- I mean a paycut. The rest of us are expected to tighten our belts- well lead by example. The Government needs some layoffs. The rest of the country has layoffs, why is the government exempt. Life is hard- and the government should be more frugal with our money than with their own. We have to count pennies, and save our loose change- why shouldn't the government?
Cut the gas tax, allow the exploitation of our natural resources. End New Deal regulations that are still hamstringing our American businesses. Life ain't for sissies- but if you work hard you should be able to get ahead in life without being dependent on government handouts.

Well written, and it certainly serves as good a call to arms for us as it does for you. We could have used one of these seven or even three years ago. Just hope you guys don't have any expectation of actually landing that punch, though, cause it ain't gonna happen. ;-)
BTW, as someone who designs web sites full time for Democratic campaigns, I must say I like the design of this site a lot. One of the best looking blogs online.
You'd better hope we can't land a punch, because if and when we do, it ain't gonna be pretty.
Nice of you to compliment the post, and the site's layout.
Now I'll give you a little hint in regards to that little "as much as I dislike your politics" crack. Any lefty comes in our house and speaks disrespectfully to our Ben -- you will have the entirety of RedState come down on your little commie head like a busload of anvils. You won't get banned (maybe) -- just shelled like Iwo Jima.
It's not that he needs anybody's help or protection -- but we've got a definite opinion about your side's politics of personal destruction. Trust me, we're entitled to be REAL DAMN TOUCHY about any lefty dirtbag dissing our Ben.
So you can just stick that "as much as I dislike your politics". There's a line there. Don't come anywhere NEAR it.
Got it?

If he is more interested in showing the other side what a good sport he is, rather than winning the game, it's going to be pretty hard to get anywhere. With the lying Dems and biased media, we need a head man who's devising ways of overcoming those obsticles, not one who accepts them and tries to constantly "reach out" to the opposition.
For the past 7 years we've had a head coach who has been afraid to offend the opposition by trying too hard, so he's simply tried to run out the clock, punted a lot on third down, constantly run prevent defense, smiled amiably when the other side has blatantly cheated, and mutely allowed the officials to aid the other side. All so that the other side will think he's a real swell sport. And all it's gotten him is constant accusations of cheating by the other team and penalty after penalty heaped on him by the officials.
We need a head coach whose focus is to defeat the other team, even if they don't like it when he wins. One who takes on the officials over their blatantly one-sided officiating. One who runs an aggressive offense and a tenacious defense. We always want to win within the rules of course, but it's time to stop defining trying to win as poor sportsmanship.
Oh that's right... 7 years... must be Bush.
Speaking of Mel Martinez, it wasn't that long ago that Erick proposed we give him the boot. I don't think the RNC heard us. What can we do to get some real leadership at the helm?

what he said. JC is right it was stupid and lazy. If we have come to the point that we quit trying to win new voters, who ever and where ever they are, we are toast. Conservatism wins if we keep putting it out there. Look at the socialism they are selling.
You sound like Appalachain State coach Jerry Moore giving his pep talk before their game in the Big House.
Problem is, just about every Division I-AA coach gives the same speech before a meeting with a I-A team, and just about all of them get steamrolled.
The other problem is that, unlike a college football game, elections take place in context. Margin of victory matters because it impacts the jumping off point for the next election. Go for the big win and we could end up with less than 190 House seats and 40 Senate seats. That means the 2010 game wouldn't start 0-0.

All you've done is complain about other people saying that things are bad. So how about saying something other than "doom doom doom" yourself. I guess in your view the best way to avoid a credibility issue is by not saying anything about where things stand.
I choose to wait until I have useful information before inventing a story to put on the line, though. There are too few known knowns, too many known unknowns, and too many possible unknown unknowns for me to make a definitive statement about what's going to happen in an electoin coming in 13 months.

You were surprised by the election results last year.
When the N*SC were more interested in beating Conservatives, even when it meant increasing Democratic turnout, that was a bad sign.
And of course when the Foley 'boob bait for bubbas' came out, all bets were off.

Your approach of "I don't know where things stand and I don't care to figure it out until just before the election" works quite well if you're not planning on giving a dime or an hour to any Republican campaign until Labor Day next year. For those of us who do, it's reasonable to set priorities as to where we can have the most impact and what are reasonable expectations. So if you really want to split your contributions between Paul Smith (CA-05) and Tom Rooney (FL-16) because you don't know anything 13 months out, go ahead. You're only helping the Democrats win more seats than they should.

Where did you get that from? Nice straw man.

That is the only circumstance in which it makes perfect sense to think that both parties really have a chance at winning every race, because in that case, it doesn't matter.
The immigration fight didn't help us, either.
One reason I've come to the conclusion that unity ought to be a goal of ours come next year (and one reason I'm hopeful for Fred Thompson's campaign, as unity is one of his themes).

1) People who set up web sites unaffiliated with Red State that pound the Dems mercilessly.
2) People who come up with a list of truly winnable House and Senate seats and keep us focused on enough to win majorities plus 2%.
3) People who focus on hitting blogs and making sure that conservative voices get heard.
4) People who focus on keeping track of where we need to send money.
