Global Warming

Posted at 2:07pm on Jun. 18, 2008 Hey You! If You Are Reading This, You Are Just Like Hitler. You Murderer.

By Erick

The Center for American Progress, recognizing fewer people believe the lie that is global warming have resorted to a new tactic.

If you deny global warming, you are like Hitler.

According to the United States Office of Strategic Services, Hitler’s strategy was based on the view:

… people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.

In fact, Hitler himself defined the term “Big Lie,” in his autobiography Mein Kempf, as

a lie so “collosal” that no one would believe that someone “could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.”

Posted at 8:30am on Jun. 6, 2008 The Global Warming Bill is an Economy Killer in Green Camouflage

By Erick

Wired is not known for being anything other than a liberally oriented magazine. It is extremely environmentally conscientious. The June 2008 issue has a whole section on global warming, including this tidbit:

The awful truth is that some amount of climate change is a foregone conclusion. The Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, calculates that even if the U.S., Europe, and Japan turned off every power plant and mothballed every car today, atmospheric CO2 would still climb from the current 380 parts per million to a perilous 450 ppm by 2070, thanks to contributions from China and India.

Undeterred, Harry Reid and the Democrats have decided to grind our economy to a halt to "solve" a problem the congress cannot solve even if the "turned off every power plant and mothballed every car today."

Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky argued that the bill's "cap and trade" approach to cutting carbon dioxide emissions would unleash "the largest restructuring of the American economy since the New Deal."

"It's a huge tax increase," he proclaimed even as the bill's supporters argued it actually would provide tax breaks for people who faced higher energy costs, and financial assistance to carbon intensive industries through a pollution allowance trading system.

Babs Boxer claims there will be no increase in gas prices, but she is lying. While the legislation does not mandate the price of gas increase, it does require such costly changes to the service station industry, the oil and gas industries, and elsewhere that the price will absolutely go up. And Barbara Boxer knows it.

There are things that can be done. We could be fostering an environment for technological changes. We could be encouraging nuclear energy. We are, in fact, doing nothing. This bill is nothing more than legislation designed to ruin our economy so government can insert itself further into business. The camouflage on the bill just happens to be green.

Posted at 1:11pm on Jun. 2, 2008 Psst-Congress Means To Stick It To You, *Again*, And You'll Just Have to Like It

And they're not even going to kiss you first-or send you flowers and a thank you note

By haystack

I know we're all much too busy with the American POTUS Idol runoff (err, I mean Primaries) to care much about policy stuff...it can be fairly boring, even when bill after bill after ever-lovin' bill puts the screws to us. But you might want to raise an eyebrow and take a closer look at what the Senate has in mind for your wallets and your livelihoods today:

According to a study released by the National Association of Manufacturers earlier this year, Lieberman-Warner would cause 1.8 million job losses, as much as a $210 billion gross domestic product reduction and possibly a 33% increase in electricity prices by 2020.

How awesome is that? Don't let the facts about how crippling this legislation will be to ALL of us get in the way of years of hard work from boisterous and well-funded PACs, and former Vice Presidential (and Nobel prize-winning) hysteria over an issue we aren't completely sure exists, let alone whether we actually caused, OR even whether we can really do much to effect a significant change. [Remember, folks, much to the chagrin of our greenie friends cave men really DIDN'T have Escalades.]

Congress means to stick it to businesses and individuals...and stick it to us GOOD...just because they can.

It's worth noting, before we delve into the dirty little details, that our Political heroes understand just how much their mistreatment of their constituents goes toward forcing control over our lives. They seem to relish the thought that they can exert so much influence..whether we like it or not.

[addendum: Funny how Congress would have you believe it's the evil Oil companies that are sticking it to us when you consider who the REAL Carbon Power Brokers are, or will be soon enough...just sayin']

More "thank you sir, may I have another" below the fold...

Posted at 11:53pm on May 14, 2008 Thank the Polar Bear for Higher Energy Costs

The Day That ANWR Died

By Bluey

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne gave a new meaning to the Endangered Species Act today. Only in Washington is it possible to call an animal "threatened" that has doubled its population over the past 40 years.

In the case of the polar bear, Kempthorne sided with left-wing activists and global warming alarmists, choosing to list the bear under the ESA -- a cause célèbre for the left.

The implications could be devastating. The decision opens the door for environmentalists and like-minded activist judges to wreak havoc on domestic energy production. Any new coal-burning power plant will be the subject of a lawsuit. And the long-running goal of opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration is now officially dead.

There are few issues where I agree with Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), but this is one of them. "This abuse of Endangered Species law will have a devastating impact on the entire nation through endless litigation and regulation," he said.

Global warming alarmists are already salivating at the thought of what harm they can impose. The Sierra Club noted that a "listing will help us use the technology and tools we have to combat global warming."

Of all the animals the Interior Department could have listed because of global warming, the polar bear hardly warrants protection. It's population stands at 20,000 to 25,000, more than double the number from the 1960s. Unfortunately, as a result of the Bush administration's unwise action, Americans will be left to suffer with higher energy costs by relying even more heavily on foreign oil.

Always Let the Right Hand Know What the Left Hand is Pandering

By Mark I

Sen. John McCain has called for a summer gas tax holiday to help consumers dealing with the rising cost of filling their tanks. Most observers, including this one, think that the temporary aspect of McCain’s suspension makes it nothing more than political pandering. But we’ll accept that because of the political strategy inherent in making this proposal. It’s a good suggestion inasmuch as it forces his Democratic rivals to go on record as for or against higher gas prices. Sen. Hillary!™ Clinton recognized the political strategy implicit in McCain’s call and quickly endorsed the idea, while the Senator from H.O.P.E.™, Barack Obama, did not. In the process Obama painted himself as more comfortable than McCain or Clinton with high gas prices. So far, so good.

But then Sen. McCain stole the thunder away from his own political jujitsu by coming out in favor of a cap and trade system for carbon emissions. Leaving aside the catastrophic economic implications such a policy would have, and sidestepping the question of whether man-made global warming is real and reversible; calling for this policy on the heels of proposing a gas tax suspension is both bad politics and poor message craft. The two proposals contradict one another and make the Democrats' message look coherent by comparison.

174 Days until Election Day

MORNING UPDATE:

OBAMA IN MICHIGAN… Ask about CAFE standards and our domestic auto industry…who will pay our bills, pay the pensions, provide the health care and insure our middle class lifestyle if you destroy the domestic auto industry???
It is going to take more than an obligatory photo-op at a Michigan auto factory to convince the rank-and-file that he (Obama) actually cares about auto jobs in Michigan.

Posted at 4:02pm on May 13, 2008 Global Warming Alarmists Using Polar Bear as a Pawn

Why it shouldn't be listed under Endangered Species Act

By Bluey

The Washington Post devoted its KidsPost page today to a sympathetic plea for the polar bear -- the predatory creature that environmentalists want listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. With a decision looming on Thursday for the Bush administration, the Post is apparently pulling out all stops, including liberal spin for kids.

Although the Post devotes just one paragraph in a 534-word article to the negative ramifications of listing the polar bear, there are plenty of reasons for Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to ignore the advice of environmentalists. Let’s start with a few of the consequences outlined by nine U.S. senators in a letter to Kempthorne last week:

• The worldwide polar bear population is somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 today -- more than double the 8,000 to 10,000 that were living in the 1960s. If and when the Endangered Species Act is used, it should protect species with declining populations.

• Listing the polar bear is really just a ploy by environmentalists to shut down any chance of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or explore for oil in other parts of Alaska. Bloomberg columnist Kevin Hassett says listing the polar bear could mean $200-a-barrel oil. At a time when America is growing increasingly dependent on foreign sources of oil, now is not the time to clamp down on domestic exploration.

• Set aside all the compassionate gibberish from WWF and it becomes clear why the polar bear is just a pawn: environmentalists will turn to activist judges citing the Endangered Species Act to halt construction of new power plants and factories that emit fossil fuels. The Green Policy Fairness Coalition already cites efforts by global warming alarmists to use lawsuits against the federal and state governments bypass the legislative process.

The nine Republican senators who signed the Kempthorne letter -- Jim DeMint (S.C.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), Jim Inhofe (Okla.), Mike Enzi (Wyo.), Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), John Cornyn (Tex.), Orrin Hatch (Utah), Wayne Allard (Colo.) and John Barrasso (Wyo.) -- deserve praise for standing for sound principles. Meanwhile, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, Jon Kyl (Ariz.), also opposes listing the bear, telling bloggers yesterday it would open the door for environmentalists to do devastating harm to America’s energy needs.

The decision should be simple for Kempthorne. Caving to radical environmentalists who want to use the Endangered Species Act to achieve their goals is the wrong approach. It’s not about the polar bear for the left; it’s really a ploy to impose even higher energy costs on Americans.

Posted at 8:53am on May 2, 2008 Kyoto Signatories Churning Out Self-Congratulations...And Carbon Emissions

The Kyoto Fig Leaf

By Dan McLaughlin

OK, so maybe the "Climate Change" crowd is having trouble proving the existence of the problem. But surely, at least their solution, expensive as it is, would take us in the right direction?

Not really:

Yes, signatories to the Kyoto Protocol have been increasing their "greenhouse gas" emissions at triple the rate of the United States. (Source; H/T) Because when you can claim that you were prevented from solving a problem by somebody else not going along, it's easy to tell yourself you don't actually have to do anything else. 'Hey, we signed an agreement. What more did you want?'

Gallup reports the percentage of Americans who worry a great deal about global warming is no higher now than it was 19 years ago.

Posted at 9:40pm on Apr. 13, 2008 For Energy Geeks Only: The Natural Gas Storage Report & AGW

By Vladimir

Natural gas usage is driven mainly by space heating. Large amounts of natural gas -- up to 3.6 trillion cubic feet, roughly 15% of all the gas that is consumed annually -- are stored in underground reservoirs in the summer, to be consumed in the wintertime when consumption outstrips the producing regions' ability to produce from wells.

So, the Energy Information Agency of the Department of Energy issues a weekly Natural Gas Storage Report every Thursday. Fun stuff. The commodities markets do watch it closely, however.

Posted at 1:00pm on Apr. 4, 2008 When Ten Years is not a Trend

Nevermind That Data Behind the Curtain. Look at These Dire Predictions

By Mark I

The proponents of man-made Global Warming have been dealt another serious blow. The United Nations World Meteorological Organisation’s official forecast predicts that global temperatures will be cooler in 2008, again. If it is correct, this will be the tenth consecutive year that global temperatures have not increased. Temperatures stopped increasing in 1998, according to the allegedly impartial world body.

But the Secretary General of the organization, Michel Jarraud, says that the cooling does not constitute a challenge to Global Warming theory. Amazingly, he says that one must not take the evidence of ten straight years of decreasing temperatures as indicative of anything when it comes to the consensus view that Global Warming is real. Rather, he says, one must “look at trends over a pretty long period and the trend of temperature globally is still very much indicative of warming."

In other words, even when it’s cooling, it’s warming.

The End Result of Earth Hour Thinking is Visible from Space

By Mark I

Did you turn out your lights on Saturday night between 8 and 9 PM to observe Earth Hour? If you didn’t, or if you were like me and turned extra lights on just to Fight the Power!, you exercised that most precious of rights and the one ingredient most essential to maintaining a free society: personal choice. But the peddlers of Earth Hour nonsense don’t want you to have that right. Not, at least, when it comes to lifestyle decisions that may impact on Global Warming.

Note that I use the original term, Global Warming, not the newly preferred moniker "climate change." Climate change only came about when it became clear that Global Warming wasn’t selling so well. I, for one, will not let the alarmists get away with moving the thermometers by changing the terms. But I digress.

If the environmental movement has its way, your betters in the Sierra Club, and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on [Global Warming] will dictate to you when you must turn off lights, what kind car or unreasonable facsimile of one you can drive, where you can live, what kind of job you can take, even how many children you can have. Does all that sound familiar? It does to me. In fact, there is one place I can think of where there is near 100% compliance with Earth Hour every night and where all of the above is already true.

By Erick

Let's keep some perspective about global warming.

You may think it exists. You may even think we need to do something about it. Heck, you may even think we are capable of doing something about it.

But let's at least learn from the mistakes of House Democrats that carbon offsets are a scam designed by a few people to make themselves richer. I bet it's just a coincidence that Al Gore is pushing carbon offsets while being part of an investment group specializing in carbon offsets.
