Hugh Hewitt

I predict that Hugh Hewitt will announce that Mitt Romney won the debate. As an objective fact.

Hugh Hewitt consoles himself over Romney's loss in Iowa by saying, "Shades of 1976 --the long march begins."

Does anyone have the heart to tell Hugh that the winners in Iowa in 1976 were Carter and Ford, the eventual nominees?

Holy cow.

I just feel the need, as a Romney supporter, to remind people that Hugh Hewitt does not, in fact, speak for the Romney campaign, is not on the Romney campaign staff, and Mitt Romney is not to be held accountable for Hugh's behavior. I know that sometimes it's hard, but it's important to evaluate the candidate based on who the candidate is, not based on the behavior of his supporters. I got a lot of material from the campaign itself both before and after the speech, and none of it was half as over-the-top as either of Hugh's post on the matter. Get that? The actual campaign material was a lot more sane. So like I said: don't hold them accountable.

But I will just say that I agree with Bill Bennett's analysis, repeated here by Byron York. I still think it was a good speech, I just don't think it'll have a lasting impact on this race.

If things prove otherwise, good for Romney for doing it - but honestly, I just think this is going to turn out to be a footnote.

By Neil Stevens

Honestly, I don't know if Hugh Hewitt's criticism of Mike Huckabee here – suggesting that it's a huge deal that Huckabee did not immediately know about the new National Intelligence Estimate of Iran, and further that he didn't immediately have developed an opinion of that estimate and its consequences – can actually be traced by to his devoted support for Mitt Romney. I say this because he shows a mindset that has been known to exist outside of political shillery: namely that being an intelligent, informed person involves being intimately aware of the stories, scandals, and talk currently hot in the mainstream press news cycle.

Specifically, Hewitt says that Huckabee makes an "astonishing admission of cluelessness" when he admits he was not aware of this bit of news. This suggests a certain obsession with novelty, an idea that one must be continuously monitoring events in order to make intelligent, informed decisions. This despite the fact that this bit of "news" discusses a viewpoint of events years old!

Maybe it's because Hewitt has his radio show to do, in which he must be continuously new to a degree in order to maintain an audience, maybe it's a sickness likely to afflict anyone who follows too much the mainstream press and their continuous news cycle, and maybe it comes with territory of having a website in which he himself reacts to news, but I don't think it's necessarily correct to pin this on a bias for Mitt Romney.

I'm loathe to engage in intra-dextrosphere blogwars, but I just wanted to add my bit about Dean Barnett's shots at pro-lifers (which, amazingly, seem to come as shots at John McCain, and appear to be a moral defense of the Dresden firebombing). I cannot hope to surpass Ross's, Mark Shea's (a hero of mine from years gone), or our own Alexham's (here and here). But I did want to add this:

Posted at 11:02pm on Mar. 26, 2007 I Hope Hugh Hewitt Realizes I'm Not A Religious Bigot

By Erick

I do hope Hugh Hewitt now realizes I'm not some sort of religious bigot. I wrote a review of Hugh's new book on Romney, which you can read here. Hugh took serious exception to one passage, which you can read about here. I was on his show tonight to talk about it and I think we agreed while still disagreeing about some of the fundamentals. Hugh wants some bright lines I'm not prepared to give.

Here's where things apparently got controversial.

Please do read on . . .
