McCain should win the GOP nomination, by the way.

By Moe Lane

[UPDATE: At 78% it's Clinton/Obama 52/48; clearly CNN is waiting for a couple counties before risking calling the race (CBS already has, for Clinton). There's going to be a lot of excited Obama supporters about this, the poor fellows.]

[UPDATE: With 20% of the vote in, it's 57/43 Clinton. This number will go down, too: urban votes will almost certainly eat into that. Given the exit polls, I'm thinking a high single, possibly double digit victory for Clinton.]

[UPDATE: The first results are in, and with a whopping 3,700 votes counted Clinton is meaninglessly ahead 66% - 34%. That will undoubtedly shrink. - Moe]

As always, results here. Polls close at 6:00, but it's going to apparently be a while before we get actual results - so here's a bit for your amusement until then:

Clinton needs to win, but any win will suit her needs.

Posted at 1:29pm on May 6, 2008 IN Dem Gov candidate campaigns illegally

He is breaking the law on election day; Just imagine what he would do if he won

By Soren Dayton

Election Journal, which should be at the top of your Election Day must-read list, catches Dem Gov. candidate Jim Shellinger breaking the law.

What's wrong here? It is illegal to campaign inside a polling location. Click through to Election Journal for the details.

Note that the Obama campaign is doing it too.

Posted at 12:14pm on Apr. 28, 2008 SCOTUS approved Indiana's voter ID law

But the AP ignores the problem

By Soren Dayton

I am not a lawyer, I am a political hack. I am sure that one of our lawyers will give a very scholarly review of today's Supreme Court decision upholding Indiana's voter ID law. Here's the AP's report. And here's the part that shocked me:

There is little history in Indiana of either in-person voter fraud -- of the sort the law was designed to thwart -- or voters being inconvenienced by the law's requirements. For the overwhelming majority of voters, an Indiana driver license serves as the identification.

I refer you to the 2003 East Chicago Democratic primary, which has been in the news recently. The teaser is the closing paragraph of the first story I am going to cite:

The task force filed charges against 53 people, Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter's office reported. Of the 52 concluded cases, 45 individuals were convicted, four cases were dismissed, one person died and two people have been found not guilty at trial.

45 convictions. How did we figure this out? Read on for more details

Posted at 8:12am on Apr. 19, 2008 MI MORNING UPDATE: State Committee kicks off today, Granholm heads to the Middle East?!?!?!

By saul anuzis

200 Days until Election Day

MORNING UPDATE:

State Committee kicked off it’s meeting yesterday. We held our county chairs meeting, which was followed by our favorite Friday night “Pizza and Politics” event…a great venue for folks to mix and mingle. As always, a great start to our meeting.

The formal State Committee meets this morning…more on that tomorrow.

Governor Granholm starts her junket to the Middle East…not on her dime! Maybe she should just go down to Indiana and figure out why Michigan companies have moved “south” over the “border”. No, we are NOT talking about Mexico. What an embarrassment.

Posted at 11:51am on Apr. 8, 2008 Obama's false advertising

By Soren Dayton

The Indianapolis Star does a little fact checking:

A Barack Obama campaign ad airing in Indiana that boasts the candidate doesn't take money from oil companies is "a little too slick," according to a political fact-checking group.

He called the ad "Nothing Changed." Indeed. That's change you can believe in...

By Erick

How are the Freshman Democrat Blue Dogs doing? These are the men and women who beat Republicans in Republican leaning seats and promised to be Republicans without the corruption. Well, Robert Novak has a report card.

Thus far, Gabrielle Giffords, Harry Mitchell, Joe Donnelly, Brad Ellsworth, Nancy Boyda, Heath Shuler, Charlie Wilson, Chris Carney, Jason Altmire, and Nick Lampson have disappointed. In fact, Lampson failed to vote on either the GOP proposed budget or the Democrat budget. And sadly, Gabrielle Giffords, Nancy Boyda, Chris Carney, and Jason Altmire voted in lock step with the Democrats from embryo killing research to eliminating the secret ballot in the workplace.

Chris Carney, whose district gave Bush 60% of its vote and Nick Lampson whose district gave Bush 64% of its vote have both voted in lock step with Nancy Pelosi on every issue, other than Lampson bailing on budget votes.

As Robert Novak notes

By winning a term in 2006 to represent a Republican district, each of the Democratic moderate freshmen earned two years to convince GOP voters that Democrats can look after their interests just as well as Republicans. But to the extent that each votes and thinks Democratic, each also risks a short career that could be over as soon as 2008.
