Jim Ryun

By kansasconservative1
In the article that appeared in The Hill yesterday about the brand new poll showing Jim Ryun with a commanding lead over his primary opponent Lynn Jenkins (50-34), we couldn't but notice a strange quote from Ryun's campaign manager Kyle Robertson:
“It’s obvious that Lynn Jenkins will use dirty tactics to avoid discussing her latest plan to raise taxes on Social Security.”
First, we don't agree with Robertson that this poll shows anything negative for Ryun- though we'd like to see his numbers much higher. This was, however, the first time we had heard the Ryun campaign talk about what all of the Republicans in the Kansas 2nd are talking about: Lynn Jenkins' plan to raise Social Security withholding taxes.
Jenkins' has been saying for weeks that the best way to fix Social Security is to do at the federal level what Kansas did (under her leadership as State Treasurer) to KPERS- the Kansas state government retirement system. Jenkins actually lead the charge to increase withholdings from employee paychecks. Now she says that's exactly how we should "save Social Security"- more taxes.
Don't believe us? We've got video to prove it:

Good for Club For Growth getting out there early. Lynn Jenkins, the underfunded tax hiking Treasurer from Holton, is making a go at the Republican nomination for Kansas-2, the seat Jim Ryun narrowly lost to Nancy Boyda last year. Ryun himself is trying to make a come back, and he odds are in his favor.
Jenkins has gone so far as to label Ryun a, dare I even use this word on the front page, a . . . conservative! She says he's out of touch with the district he represented for multiple terms. Well, the Club has fired its first shot in the race and it's a good one using Lynn Jenkins' own record against her.

One of the conservative good guys that took a beating in 2006 was Jim Ryun (KS-02). That he was trailing his opponent toward the end was a sure signal of Republican collapse. Ryun was beaten 47% to 51% by Nancy Boyda, with an assist from a Reform party candidate.
Ryun has decided to run again and today announced he's raised $275,000 in the first quarter with $255,000.00 on hand. There are actually a few Republicans running in the primary with Ryun not only being the definite conservative in the race, but one with the record to prove it. He was ranked at 90% conservative by National Journal, was a solid Republican Study Committee member, voted against the prescription drug benefit, and voted against the 2003 end-of-session spending bill that totaled $373 billion.
While the Democrats aren't considering Boyda to be a vulnernable incumbent right now, Ryan has repeatedly proven himself a solid candidate and the House Dems are doing themselves no favors. Already Boyda is signalling she views Ryun as a threat by running smear campaigns against him and the way he handled constituent services while in Congress. Boyda is one of those candidates on whom we should keep pressure.
