Opinion in Bloomberg v. Beretta U.S.A. here. Basically, the court found that the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act is a constitutional exercise of Congress' Commerce power, doesn't violate the 10th Amendment, and bars New York City's lawsuit seeking under state law to enjoin gun manufacturers' lawful firearms sales on the grounds th

No Point In Running
By Dan McLaughlin
Mike Bloomberg, the socially liberal and otherwise centrist Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent Mayor of New York, has announced in an op-ed for tomorrow's NY Times that he is not running for President:
I am not — and will not be — a candidate for president. ...

In the weeks and months ahead, I will continue to work to steer the national conversation away from partisanship and toward unity; away from ideology and toward common sense; away from sound bites and toward substance. And while I have always said I am not running for president, the race is too important to sit on the sidelines, and so I have changed my mind in one area. If a candidate takes an independent, nonpartisan approach — and embraces practical solutions that challenge party orthodoxy — I'll join others in helping that candidate win the White House.
Sounds to me like he's probably more open to backing McCain, who goes beyond rhetorical nods and has actually worked to buck his party's orthodoxy more than I or other conservative Republicans would like; Obama may be a "unity" candidate in his rhetoric, but few things are less descriptive of Barack Obama than "practical solutions that challenge party orthodoxy."

I dunno Jeff, it was a stupid thing to say (you're supposed to compare Congress to drunks, not the voters) but he's right about the fact that just writing 1-shot checks to people is a bad idea, and he's right about the need to plan longer-term.
That's not to suggest that Bloomberg is good on his fiscal-policy plans. And I still think that especially with McCain as the nominee, a third-party run by Bloomberg would not only be dumb but would hurt the Democrats more than our side.

By Neil Stevens
Nurse Mayor Bloomberg may say he's not a candidate for President, but he's clearly thinking about it. He talked with Ross Perot's ballot access expert today in a private Texas meeting. Says the AP:
Bloomberg met privately with Clay Mulford, who is well-versed in third-party ballot access and served as campaign manager for Perot, according to an individual close to the mayor. Perot sought the presidency in 1992 and 1996. The lunch meeting with Mulford comes less than two months before Bloomberg would be able to start gathering signatures to get on the ballot and meet Texas' early deadline.
The last thing the Democrats need in this race is a left-wing former Democrat talking big on medical care. Run Mike Run!
