Posted at 2:58pm on Jul. 8, 2008 Thank You for Supporting Our Troops

By Congressman Mike Conaway

Thank you so much to the more than 4,800 of you who responded to the petition drive I started in support of General Petraeus and our troops' effort in Iraq. With your help, we were able to present this American hero with solid, heartfelt evidence of support for him, his troops, and their mission.

General Petraeus genuinely appreciated the gesture, and wrote the following letter of thanks for your heartfelt support:

By Neil Stevens

Politico reports of a new Pew Research poll that shows support for the war, and belief that we're winnning, is at its highest point in nearly two years.

According to late February polling conducted by The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, 53 percent of Americans—a slim majority—now believe “the U.S. will ultimately succeed in achieving its goals” in Iraq. That figure is up from 42 percent in September 2007.

The percentage of those who believe the war in Iraq is going “very well” or “fairly well” is also up from 30 percent in February 2007 to 48 percent today.

This is not a good time to be a cut and run wimp like Barack "Widdle Baby Kitten" Obama.

Don't tell the Democrats

By haystack

Contrary to popular belief amongst the Democrats, the surge continues to enjoy progress and show signs of ultimately working according to plan. There are many indicators of our finally approaching "success" (as President Bush started calling it when, after so much hatred and vilification from the anti-war crowd and their Democrat puppets in Congress, we were all forced to retool our expectations away from a once-hoped-for "victory").

It's ok...you say to-may-to, I say to-mot-to...whatever floats your boat.

So, we find in this little gem a rather significant piece of news that very little fuss is being made about:

Iraq's army and police could be ready to take over security in all 18 provinces by the end of this year as the U.S. military moves toward a less prominent role in the country, U.S. officials said on Thursday.

"We look at it every month. We make recommendations. I think that if we continue along the path we're on now, we'll be able to do that by the end of 2008," Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, the No. 2 commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, said when asked when Iraqi forces could take the lead in all provinces.

WHATEVER you do, don't tell those idiots running the House and Senate. Why, they might stop focusing on Roger Clemens' steroid scandal and find some nifty NEW way to muck things up over there...before our Soldiers can finish this thing and pull back into the support role we've been promised all along - and is getting closer every day to becoming a reality.

God bless our brave men and women - for they show us how to get things done in SPITE of the roadblocks Democrats put in front of them.

More below the fold...

Terrorists jumping from the frying pan to the fire

By Neil Stevens

Radio Netherlands reports (link via The Corner) some pretty good news in Afghanistan, complete with hidden bonuses of related news elsewhere in the War on Terror:

The International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan says the Taliban is in control of no more than five of the country's 59 districts. The statement comes during the surprise visit of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates to Afghanistan.

ISAF spokesman Carlos Branco says the Taliban has failed as a resistance movement. However, the Portuguese general admits that an increasing number of fighters from the terrorist network al-Qaeda are entering the country from Iraq where they are suffering defeats.

The many-fold implications of this report are just delicious for those of us who have been banging our heads against the brick walls of the Democratic left's arguments against the War on Terror.

Posted at 11:01am on Oct. 23, 2007 The New Narrative

Oh those rascally Neocons...

By Neil Stevens

What do do you when you're a mainstream press reporter, and your narrative of doom and gloom in Iraq is made more laughable every day by General Petraeus and his new strategy? Well, you need a new narrative of course.

Via Greyhawk at The Mudville Gazette we just might be seeing the beginnings of that new narrative. Says Newsweek:

The Bush administration is starving for good news out of Iraq, and it may finally have some: new U.S. government statistics showing that violent attacks of all kinds are down to levels not seen since 2005. But until recently, the administration appears to have resisted acknowledging a key element of the new data, because it flies in the face of President George W. Bush's ongoing rhetorical confrontation with Iran's clerical regime.

Part of me wants to respond to this with a couple pictures of owls, one captioned ORLY? And another replying YARLY! But now, I will soldier on and give this a serious look.

Carving out a niche for those who still care about victory

By Jeff Emanuel

Photos by the author. More here.

Thirty representatives of the thousands-strong advocacy group Vets for Freedom, made up of veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, took Capitol Hill (specifically, the Russell Senate Office Building) by storm yesterday, meeting with Senators and their representatives and making their case for continued support of General Petraeus and the American effort in Iraq. I was there with them, as were RedState readers The Fastest Squirrel and Gideon1789.

Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) met separately with the group's representatives to start off the day. Both expressed their staunch support for the troops and for the mission, thanking each and every soldier, sailor, airman, and Marine there for their service and for their advocacy, and promising to do whatever they could to stave off the opposition who are seeking to declare defeat in Iraq for political gain, and Graham spoke forcefully against al Qaeda and Iran, who he said were "the two biggest killers of American soldiers" in that country, and derided the Democrat leadership for their "all night stunt" which was on the calendar for that evening. "Woooo, they're staying up all night. Very tough," said Graham, hs voice dripping with very welcome sarcasm. "Our soldiers are staying up all night tonight, too -- in firefights with the enemy, with al Qaeda."
